the jazz superstar line-up of Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny at the Mellon Jazz festival, Academy of Music, Philadelphia on June 23, 1990. This was part of an outstanding world tour following up drummer DeJohnette's Parallel Realities album, though this programme and the original album only have two cuts in common, "Indigo Dreamscapes" and "Nine Over Reggae". Hancock (piano and keyboards) and Metheny (guitar) were both on Parallel Realities but here contribute material from their own back catalogue: Hancock a barnstorming 15-minute "Hurricane" and the closing "Cantaloupe Island", Metheny offering the appropriately nocturnal and reflective "The Bat". Bassist Dave Holland, who was the guest on the tour, introduces the sequence with the longest cut, "Shadow Dance". Here are four of the world's finest modern jazz artists at the top of their game; virtuoso playing certainly, but also impeccable taste and artistry, seamless interaction and inspired music-making. When combined with a transparent, gimmick-free visual style, which simply shows the musicians playing, concentrating on whoever is soloing to offer the best seat in the house, the result is an uplifting, exhilarating example of how well jazz can be presented on DVD. On the DVD: there are no special features other than a trailer for two classical DVDs, and as such the disc starts playing automatically, allowing it to be used like a particularly long live album without even turning the TV on. Unusually for 1990 the concert was shot at 16:9 and is presented anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs, though nothing can disguise the relative softness of live video shot under concert lighting, nor the occasional after-images left by the lighting. The stereo sound is absolutely first-rate, and that's what really counts.--Gary S. Dalkin

DVD Description
An unexpected yet amazing collaboration of four diverse jazz musicians, the musical melding of Jack Dejohnette, Dave Holland, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny was a delight for jazz aficionados around the world. After playing festivals and concerts in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe, the critically acclaimed quartet moved onto Philadelphia's renowned Mellon Jazz Festival. Filmed on June 23 and 24, 1990, this live video shows off the fruit of the collaboration. Carefully selected and edited to give the illusion of one seamless, perfect performance, this record is even better than the real thing. Ten tracks are performed, including "The Bat," "Solar," "Shadow Dance," and "The Good Life."
Advantages: Quality music Disadvantages: Not for everyone
...Ok - so the plot is a bit far fetched, but the thing about BB2000 is that they have some of the greatest jazz and blues musicians ever, performing together...a fantasy gig that you'd never get a chance to see normally.
Here is just a selection:
B.B. King
Junior Wells
Aretha Franklin
Wilson Pickett
James Brown
Eric Clapton
Jack deJohnette
Bo Diddley
Dr. John
Isaac Hayes
Lou Rawls
Stevie Winwood
Erykah Badu
The film does what it sets out to do - amuse. It's like one of the old Cannonball Run films with Burt Reynolds in it.
The Blues Brothers are looking for work, and they hear of a competition - the Battle of the Bands in New Orleans, run by a voodoo priestess Queen Mousette - played by Erykah Badu. They are being chased by the police and by the Mafia - which results in some very amusing chases. I believe BB2000 has the biggest car...

Advantages: You get to see just how good a musician Paul Weller is. Disadvantages: None
...Not only is Paul a mod hero, but he is also one of the best musicians currently around. As shown in the dvd he can play many instruments and make all of them sound like his own.
His past being in Mod music with the Jam, on the dvd you can still see that he is a mod at heart. The way he dresses for one thing, and the haircut just says it all !!
This dvd is a recording of one of his concerts containing all of his best songs such as "Peakcock Suit", "Wild Wood", and "Sweet Pea my Sweet Pea". (Full tracklisting at the bottom of the page)
The dvds have a full length concert showing Paul and his backing band playing through many of his songs. There are interviews, promo videos.
It is well worth the money. There are over 4 hours of footage contained on the dvds.
Disc 1:
Live Wood (dir. By Pedro Romanyi): 1. Bull Rush 2. Magic Bus 3. Hung...

Advantages: Always welcome to have Hancock on DVD Disadvantages: Awful transfers, no extras
...If this is the film I proposed four weeks ago, then where is the other half of it? This DVD features both of Tony Hancocks film vehicles, the 1961 effort 'The Rebel' and the 1963 'Punch and Judy Man'. Neither go anywhere near to capturing the genius of the performer so loved on radio and television, but they do at least give us the chance to stick him on our shelves for rainy days, while we wait patiently for more BBC releases of his material.
'The Rebel' was scripted by regular Hancock writers Galton and Simpson, with help from the star. It tells of the imprisonment of Anthony Hancock, a man with so much to give the world, but trapped in the everyday grind of everyday work. Breakfast, train, work, train, home...and then just for a few hours, Hancock can let loose his creative forces. In the backroom of his lodgings, with beret donned...
