Following Sean Connery's 1 film return in Diamonds Are Forever, and with George Lazenby having burnt bridges with his behaviour and demands following On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the Bond team needed a new man to fill the shoes of the charismatic MI6 agent. Enter Mr. Suave, Roger Moore, to film Live And Let Die, the first of 7 films in which he was to play James Bond.
The Plot
Following the suspicious deaths of three agents, James Bond 007 is sent to New York to infiltrate a heroin-producing ring, where he encounters the mysterious Dr Kananga and Mr. Big. Kananga's henchmen are formidable, with a voodoo master, tarot card reader and a right hand man with a claw instead of a hand! Bond must have his wits about him as he travels to Kananga's Caribbean island to stop the drugs lord.
The Cast and Performances
Roger Moore brings a different element to the role of James Bond. While Connery was the ultimate in charm and charisma, Moore is very much the British gentleman, with his suave and debonair approach to wooing the ladies being his attraction. he also makes the role a little more believable by actually struggling in some of the fight sequences. Good job, Mr Moore!
Yaphet Kotto turns in a blinding performance as Mr Big, and is marvellously backed up by his two henchmen, Tee Hee and Baron Samedi, played by Julius Harris and Geoffrey Holder respectively. Jane Seymour is sultry as Bond girl Solitaire, the tarot card reader who seduces Bond. Bernard Lee, Desmond Llewellyn and Lois Maxwell return as M, Q and Miss Moneypenny. The remainder of the cast support well, in particular David Hedison as Felix Leiter, who has been Bond's CIA contact throughout the films.
My Opinion
I like the blockbuster feel of this film. Roger Moore's first attempt at Bond is very well met, with a smashing adventure taking him to the Caribbean. Interestingly enough, director Guy Hamilton, in the chair for the third time for a Bond film, has managed to produce a much more extravagant film than Diamonds Are Forever with a very similar budget, spending less in fact than the last Connery Bond film.
The special effects of the film and its voodoo nature in paces probably lends itself to a bit more of an adventure, and I think it has helped having a difference in villain. S.P.E.C.T.R.E. has featured as the nemesis organisation of James Bond up until this film. The fact that Yaphet Kotto is a very convincing villain helps enormously, as I for one was getting confused with so many different actors playing Blofeld in the previous films. One-off villains are easier to take in.
The scenery of the Caribbean is amazing, with views stretching as far as the eye can see, and the awesome soundtrack is headed by Paul McCartney and Wings, performing the title track, which was later covered by Guns 'n' Roses. This is a very good start for Moore as Bond, and a great continuance of a successful franchise for the producers of Bond. Nothing negative of any import, but if anything, it is a little cheesy.
Conclusion
Great Bond movie, good start for Roger Moore as Bond.
