I'm not a massive fan of Bond films and personally I think they're getting worse and Casino Royale was one of the most boring films I've ever watched but I did like some of them and I was really in the mood for a Bond film yesterday so when choosing one from the whole series up to Golden Eye (my aunt won them all years ago and gave them to me) I had to go with my favourite Live and Let Die. Bear in my mind whilst reading this review that I am rather cynical when it comes to James Bond so all praise his high praise
The film starts with the assassinations of three British agents. One is killed by sound in New York, another killed by a bunch of singing and dancing funeral procession in New Orleans and the other by a snake in a voodoo ritual in a Caribbean island called San Monique.
San Monique it turns out is ruled by a dictator called Kananga, he rules by fear. His right hand man lacks a right hand and instead has a mechanical claw and his other partner is called Baron Samedi "the man who cannot die" he is a master of voodoo and scares the islands population. Bond is sent to investigate these goings on and travels to New York and after a botched assassination attempt on him he comes across the haunt of Mr.Big in Harlem. Mr. Big is a drug lord and a very dangerous man who seems to be dealing with Kananga.
Kananga also has one other asset: Solitaire a tarot card reader who tells his future and warns him of dangers. She only has the power as long as she is a virgin and of course as soon as Bond arrives on the island he sees to this and escapes with her. The film then moves on to a series of car chases, boat chases, escapes and traps. There is also a rather important plot revelation which I do not wish to spoil and if you haven't seen this film don't look at IMBd as the very cast list gives away the secret.
This is definitely and by far my favourite Bond film. What makes it great is all the action, it lasts two hours and not long in I wanted to go to the toilet but I could never find an appropriate point to pause it so I never did. Bond has to deal with out of control cars, snakes, crocodiles, sharks, voodoo masters and a whole lot more. We have a great car chase with bind being chased whilst driving an old double decker bus and a 14 minute speed boat chase and I know a lot of people think that this may sound boring but it is actually really, really good and entertaining to watch. The speedboats have to go past a lot of various obstacles and Bond is always trying to think of inventive ways of loosing them. Also on shore we have the Sheriff J. W. and this guy is a hilarious old hick who is angry at the whole affair after his police car is destroyed and provides a lot of comic respite during the chase. His character was so good they brought him back in The Man with the Golden Gun as a tourist in Thailand
It is Roger Moore's first outing as Bond and although he is not my favourite actor to portray Bond he does an excellent job here. He is a cocky Bond awful fond of his double entendres and being very British rather like Connery's portrayal. We have a total of three Bond girls here an insignificant Italian agent in the beginning and then a CIA agent Rosie Carver played by Gloria Hendry a famous blaxploitation actress (of course this film has a lot of blaxploitation elements). Then of course Solitaire played by Jane Seymour who has gone on to star in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman which is actually a very watchable show. I personally think she is one of the best Bond girls of all time because as well as being a very sexy woman she also has an actual role in this film. Sometimes Bond girls can just be a pointless motif they have to use. I do sort of wonder about Bond's technique when it comes to seducing Solitaire I mean he blatantly deceives her into having sex with him I reckon she could have had him prosecuted for rape. I quite like Kananga played by Yaphet Kotto as the villain he's a smooth cool headed character who has a more conventional agenda than most Bond villains and surprisingly the plot has nothing to do with the Cold War. His Hench men Baron Samedi and Tee Hee were also great and memorable and I love the end scene of the film because of them.
A slight problem with this film is that there's no Q. M does deliver a watch to Bond that has a powerful magnet on it and there is gun given to him by Felix (Bond's CIA counterpart) that fires bullets of compressed air that cause for a very funny conclusion in the film. But still a scene with Q would have been nice. Money Penny and M both appear.
The theme for Live and Let Die was written by Paul and Linda McCartney and performed by Paul and the Wings. Most people know this song, the frogs sang it in Shrek 3 as well. It is actually a really good Bond them I'm not a Paul McCartney fan but I liked this. There is a weird part that seems a bit out of place where he's singing something like "If you have a job to do you better do it well" but the music is generally quite good and works really well within the film itself. The opening sequence was also pretty typical of a Bond film with the silhouettes of naked women but it also had these skulls in flames which was rather apt for the whole voodoo theme within the film. There is a scene in the film where a woman sings the song in a bar in Harlem and personally I think her version was better than McCartney's. Add this to the cool Jazz music at the vivacious funerals this film had a brilliant soundtrack
The film was directed by Guy Hamilton who also directed Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and The Man With The Golden Gun in the Bond series and Funeral in Berlin in the Harry Palmer series amongst other films. I think he done a great job of this film and the directing of the boat chase especially was excellent. There are a few inconsistencies I noticed one being the fact that Felix seems to send Bond unknowingly right next door to the house he's got bugged and knows Dalanaga is in amongst a few others but you can't be to nit picky, it's a Bond film and a darn good one. It did sort of have the usual James Bond annoyances where the bad guy always procrastinates when he captures Bond and never just kills him but I suppose if he killed him it would be a pretty short film.
All in all a brilliant film one that can be watched by all and enjoyed by all as a film on its own as well as a Bond film. I watched it with my 11 year old brother and we both really enjoyed it. I recommend it to anyone and if anyone hasn't seen a Bond film before this is the second one I'd point them to after Dr.No.
One last thing to mention is that this is a Bond film based on an Ian Fleming novel called Live and Let Die as well, rather than by anyone else. Live and Let Die was Flemings second Bond novel after Casino Royale and actually led on from the Casino Royale novel plot. I wondered if Quantom of Solace would therefore be a sort of remake of Live and Let Die but apparently not.
Certification
This film is a PG. Bond makes innuendos children won't really get and apart from that there is some violence and at one point a woman does sat "shit".
Advantages: Erm................good theme tune Disadvantages: Weak acting, story was far fetched at time, bad effects and fight scenes
Well it seems quite strange to say that hubby chose this film as it does not star John Wayne but I have to say I think I would have perhaps preferred him to this drivel I had to endure. Roger Moore takes on the role of 007, James Bond in this film. He is set to uncover the mysterious deaths of 005 and 006 and soon he finds he is tracking a drug lord. He stars off in New York where he is chased and threaten but during this he meets Solitaire, a tarot ... ...things which are about to happen, who he instantly find attractive. Bond soon finds his investigations lead him to Louisiana’s Bayou Country where he uncovers some very powerful men and again he meets Solitaire and vows to help her escape from the Drug Lord. Will Bond be able to save himself from the drug Lord and his men and will he be able to help Solitaire?
Now I know the plot summery which I have been given sound very brief but taking away Bond ...

Advantages: Great Bond film Disadvantages: A little cheesy, nothing major though
...Suave, Roger Moore, to film Live And Let Die, the first of 7 films in which he was to play James Bond.
The Plot
Following the suspicious deaths of three agents, James Bond 007 is sent to New York to infiltrate a heroin-producing ring, where he encounters the mysterious Dr Kananga and Mr. Big. Kananga's henchmen are formidable, with a voodoo master, tarot card reader and a right hand man with a claw instead of a hand! Bond must have his wits about ... ...the drugs lord.
The Cast and Performances
Roger Moore brings a different element to the role of James Bond. While Connery was the ultimate in charm and charisma, Moore is very much the British gentleman, with his suave and debonair approach to wooing the ladies being his attraction. he also makes the role a little more believable by actually struggling in some of the fight sequences. Good job, Mr Moore!

Live and Let Die marks the first Bond outing for Roger Moore as Britain's favourite secret service agent 007, and what an explosive film it is!
Full of voodoo witchcraft, New Orleans jazz and Tarot cards that always turn up displaying Death! Live and Let Die sees James Bond investigating the death of three MI6 agents. This leads him to the drug lord Mr Big, and the dictator of San Monique, Dr Kananga (who turn out to be the same person). Here Voodoo ... ...truth, as does a Tarot card wielding assistant in the form of Solitaire (Jane Seymour). ...Saint, Moore had alot to live up to, in the shadow of Connery and the (alleged) mis-casting of Lazenby....he certaintly had to make his mark.
As most who have watched Moore in action will agree he certaintly did that......however, I would add that it probaly was not to everyones tastes.
