July 6th, 2005. Hyde Park London. France. Germany. Italy. USA. Canada. Japan. South Africa. Russia. 8 MILLION viewers. History was made.
Kicking off in Hyde Park is U2. The perfect start to a monumentous gig and one that will have goose pimples rising on your arms as you listen to Beautiful Day.
This four disc dvd shows the complete best bits of all the shows from across the world. Its amazing. Loads of great artists, from the aformentioned U2 to Annie Lennox to mUse and the Kaiser Chiefs. Those are just some of the great names in music today performing live for your viewing pleasure. Its a bit like a compilation CD, but only you can see the artists performing live and the atmosphere from the crowds watching is electric and pulses through you as you watch.
Its hard to explain in words how this show makes you feel. If you were there then you can reminisce of memories of the show you reember and the feeling you had when you were there. If (like me) you weren't there but were watching at home or listening to radio at work wishing you were there then you will feel slightly gutted because you misse dout on such a historic event but also feel elated that you can watch it all live now and still say that you were part of something big and helping the world.
Back to the DVD. Its crammed full of performances on each disk. All in great quality (audio and visual) and are produced and captured very well. You turn off the lights, pull the curtains across, whack on the surround sound and you will feel like you are there in the crowd. The atmosphere is captured very well.
The extras on the dvd are imho a bit weak. There arent very many and I would have liked to have seen more behind the scenes bits. But the ones that are there from the Gervais bit to 'Who are You' where africans adorn the masks of the G8 leaders in a very powerful way and make you stop and think.
In conclusion this is a great DVD, it is a monumentous day in history captured to view whenever you like and where ever you like. It makes you feel as if you were part of it and is indeed emotional. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did and wish the injustice to stop and start making Africa a better place to live for its people. Thanks for reading!
