Little Miss Sunshine is a bit of a different film to the type that I enjoy watching but none the less it is one of my favourites. It first came out in the cinemas in 2006, so is a couple of years old now.
Little Miss Sunshine is about an American family. They are not the perfect family that is normally depicted in films though, they are a bit rough round the edges. The dad Richard (Greg Kinnear) is a life coach who is trying his hardest to become a successful business man but failing. Mum Sheryl (Toni Collette) is trying to do her best for her whole family but can't help arguing with Richard. Grandpa Edwin (Allan Arkin) has been kicked out of his home for taking drugs and so the family have to take care of him. He loves spending time to help prepare Olive for her beauty pageants though. Olive (Abigail Breslin) is the youngest member of the family and really wishes she could one day be a beauty queen. She is a little chubby though and wears glasses, so doesn't seem like your average beauty queen. Her older brother Dwayne (Paul Dano) has taken a vow of silence until he fulfils his dream of becoming an airline pilot. The already disfunctional family are added to when Sheryls brother Frank (Steve Carell) tries to commit suicide after the man he loves ends up with someone else.
The story follows this family as they all head off on a road trip to California so that Olive can compete to become Little Miss Sunshine. Sheryl doesn't want to leave Frank or Grandpa alone so the whole family end up having to go together. They all leave in the Volkwagen minibus, which ends up causing them a few problems of its own. A lot of incidents happen along the way and will Olive ever make it to the Pageant on time? You will have to watch to find out.
This is a really good story for a film. It shows how even the most disfunctional families can pull together when they need to. How they get to this stage is good to watch as each of the characters goes through their own problems. The mix of characters is what really makes the film I think. It is not trying to be nice and cutesy and have a perfect family. Instead it is showing what a lot of families are probably really like. It makes the characters a lot more loveable as you can believe they are like the way they are. The way the characters interact with each other is good to watch as well as for example Grandpa may be a drug taking old man who likes porn but he also loves his Grandchildren a lot and will do anything to help Olive and is always singing her praises. What the story of the film also shows is that you don't need to be perfect to be happy. The lessons behind it may make it sound a bit mushy but it isn't like that at all. The film has been made in a really clever way that makes you feel sentimental but at the same time as being shocked and amused.
There are lots of funny scenes in the film. These aren't funny in a slap stick way , but in a more intelligent way. The end in particular is my favourite part and this is very funny. As I said previously there are also some slightly shocking parts to the film. Not really shocking, but definitely a bit different from your average film about a family.
The DVD of this film can be purchased for around £3 from Amazon or Asda so is definitely a bargain buy.
Overall it is a really enjoyable film to watch that makes you think a bit more than the average. It is heart warming and well worth watching.
