Brilliantly acted film about drug scene in the Little Siagon district of Sydney. When actors of the calabre of Blanchette, Weaving and Neill sign up to a low budget, independent film you know that it is going to be a good quality script and with the directing talent of Rowan Woods, you will not be diasappointed.Of particular note are Cate Blanchette, Hugo Weaving and Noni Hazelhurst.
Tracey is a recovering Heroin addict who's routine consists of swimming, working, sleeping and little else. Her Mother (brilliantly played by Hazelhurst), struggles to keep the family together aware that some of the choices she has made in the past have not given her son and daughter the best start in life . This includes her ex boyfriend,ex rugby star Lionel (the sublimely talented Hugo Weaving), who introduced Tracey to Heroin in the first place.
Tracey unknown to her mother is in contact with Lionel, a faded ,struggling, drug haddled version of his former self. Now his drug boss , ex lover "the Jockey" (a very menacing Sam Neill), is retiring , Lionel's free supply is gone and Tracey attempts to support him through withdrawl. It is not giving anything away to say that this is a hopeless task and Tracy is soon forced to face her old lifestyle head on in her attempt to support Lionel. Although this may seem a self distructive task, Tracy and Lionel have a heart warmingly close relationship and the reasons why become clearer as the film progresses.
Her brother (Martin Henderson) brings an unexpected guest home in the form of Tracey's Ex boyfriend and ex dealer (Dustin Nyugen), much to the annoyance of their mother, as her son was injured and lost a leg in a car accident involving Johnny.
The Video store which Tracey manages becomes for sale. Her attempts to finance the venture are treated with scorn by the banks. Tracey's brother and Johnny come up with a plan to solve all their problems. As this involves a very nasty gangster who is in turn double crossing gangland boss, The Jockey, this is not going to go smoothly, especially as all the connections between the characters are not known to each of them.
This is a thriller about the lives of real people and the role of the family, that can be the downfall and resurrection all at the same time.
Complicated plot, a little sentimental at times and ending will not satisfy everyone. Not action packed but a good intersting plot line will keep you satisfied and your brain buzzing.
What shortfalls there are and there are few, are made up for by the stella performances of all the cast.
Good audio commentary by Rowan Woods, deleated scenes, behind the scenes and trailer make up the extras ( not something I am usually that interested in to tell you the truth).
This is for those who like independent films, fine acting, a plot that is not spoon fed and leaves room for interpretation. Not for action buffs or those who like the usual hollywood fodder.
Aussie DVDs will play here so no need to worry on that score.
The film recieved 5 AFI awards incuding :
Best Actress-Cate Blanchette; Best Actor-Hugo Weaving; Best Supporting Actress-Noni Hazelhurst.
I really enjoyed this and if you are looking for something a bit different you probably will too, to quote Rob Lowing of Australian publication, The Sun Herald: "A near perfect achievement, a poignant study of Austrailian life that that stays in the memory for weeks afterwards".
Advantages: Split into 4 episodes and not too much technical langauge. Disadvantages: some more or longer episodes would be nice
My partner has recently got back into coarse fishing from when he was a kid and so I decided to buy him a fishingDVD for Christmas.
I was a little unsure what to buy and so consulted a "fishing god" I know who has been doing it all his life and he advised that anything by Matt Hayes would be a good choice.
I decided to have a look on ebay and saw this one for a "buy it now" for about £4 and bought it.
Cover:
When the DVD arrived I was a little sceptical about what it was going to be like as it was a simple photograph of Matt on the front and four photographs on the back (....maybe it is just me..coming for an era of bright lights and computer graphics!)
The back cover gives a basic overview of what is included on the DVD: Fishing for Carp and Catfish in France, Barbel and Chub in the UK, Carp in Italy and Catfish in Spain ...
Advantages: Learn about Cuttle Mill Disadvantages: It's too old
of baits (bread, potato, tares, hemp, peanuts, chick peas, tiger nuts and boilies) and yet manages to tell you very little at all. He manages this by repeating the same thing several times for different baits. An example of this is when he talks about the preparation of particle baits, first you must soak them and then boil them for about 20mins. This is repeated for all the particle and nut baits one at a time. It would have been a lot quicker by saying that all of these baits are prepared in the same way. But I suppose they had to fill out the dvd with something.
One relavant point was the explanation of why boilies are used to single out carp. With their tough outer it makes the bait very resilient to attacks from smaller fish. If a paste or other soft bait was used then these smaller fish would be able to peck away at the bait until ...
Advantages: The extra features on the DVD are great. Disadvantages: The Story
at the cover. This is not "Three Kings" or "American Soldiers" Iraq this si the side of Iraq the media dont tell you about. The nice quiet side were soldiers fo about celebrating christmas posing. I mean the story is a bit out of touch with the times, were soldiers are being killed in Iraq almost everyday. I suppose you have to grant it, taht it is the first gulf war.
My mate liked it as there "were alot of fit men" I tried to look at it from that perspective but just felt uncomfortable with myself and didn't enjoy the film any the more
The problem with the film I deduce is thus; The charcters are weak. This is a film devoid of action therefore dialogue and characterisation are meant to keep this boat afloat. Well they didn't, the boat sunk. Landed on a littlefish. See that's what happens when you make crap filsm like this. FISH DIE. Does ...

LITTLE FISH unfolds as an urgent sprawl of fractured hopes and casual deception. The actors are terrific, especially Weaving....The revelation, however, is Rowan Woods, a major filmmaker in the making. (Entertainment Weekly, 20/07/2006)
"Don't miss a star performance from the always superb Cate Blanchett" (Red, 05/09/2006)
[T]his is a prestige picture no doubt, a superb ensemble headed by Blanchett's mesmeric turn as a strained spirit in search of a fresh start. (Total Film, 15/08/2006)
