show. Characters such as Dafydd, the only gay man in his village, Fatfighters group leader Majorie Dawes, teenage girl Vicky Pollard, and rubbish transvestite Emily Howard. Along with these characters there is the carer Lou and his wheelchair bound pal, Andy, aging actor Sir Bernard Chumley, disgraced kids star Des Kaye and many more. Originally created for Radio Four, this television series is primarily written by it's two stars, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. With a surreal narration provided by former Doctor Who, Tom Baker and regular guest appearances by Buffy star Anthony Stewart Head as the Prime Minister, the show presents a wide range of comedy characters in sketches shot both on location and in the studio.n
over ten years, an underground tunnel that links us to Peru, and we invented the cat," narrates Tom Baker gleefully at the beginning of Little Britain, introducing the first hit show for fledgling digital channel BBC3 and the best new comedy since The League of Gentlemen. In fact, creators and stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams acknowledge a large debt to the League, not only in the gallery of grotesques all performed by the duo, but also in the way in which the familiar sketch-show format is expanded by clever use of locale: not Royston Vasey here, but "Britain" itself in all its perverse splendour: from Darkly Noon, where chavette Vicky Pollard seems all too frighteningly real ("Yeah, but no, but yeah. Shut up!"), to the Welsh village with only one gay, to the council estate where buck-toothed Lou looks after apparently wheelchair-bound Andy ("Yeah, I know"), to Kelsey Grammar School where pupils are baffled and confused by their fusty teacher, and many more besides. It's unashamedly puerile stuff and, as with The Fast Show before it, many sketches rely on a single incident or catchphrase repeated over and over in only slightly different contexts. But it works brilliantly, thanks to the characterisations of Lucas and Walliams, their sharp eye for the eccentricities of modern life, and of course that surreal voiceover from Tom Baker. On the DVD: This is a handsome two-disc set chock full of tasty extras. Lucas and Walliams provide a surprisingly serious commentary, joined in turn by producer Myfanwy Moore and director Steve Bendelack (a League of Gentlemen alumnus). There's the original pilot episode, plus plenty of deleted scenes, live sketches, several behind-the-scenes segments, an interview with Jonathan Ross, and a half-hour Best of Rock Profiles, the hilarious spoof series in which Walliams and Lucas impersonated various rock stars. If that's not enough, you can also select from a gallery to watch all the sketches featuring your favourite characters. Another triumph for Auntie Beeb. --Mark Walker

Little Britain: Series 1 & 2 is an economical and entertainment-packed way to catch up with one of the comedy phenomenon of the decade. A sketch show focusing on an eclectic selection of characters, there's plenty here to enjoy. From catchphrase comedy, including Dafydd, the only gay in the village, and the yeah-but-no-but-yeah-spouting Vicky Pollard, through to quieter, wryly observed takes on everyday life, it's hard not to be entertained. It's tricky to pick highlights, but the trick here is that the show' creators--Matt Lucas and David Walliams--have created numerous memorable characters, and have a great knack at putting them in tightly written, at times gut-bustingly funny scenarios. Witness the adventures of wheelchair-bound Andy, as he leads his carer Lou on a merry dance, for evidence. Little Britain isn't a flawless show by any means, and there are a fair share of troughs to the undeniable peaks. Yet Lucas and Walliams, through both their writing and performances, keep the laughs coming regularly and reliably. For Little Britain is fast, frequently very funny indeed, and has enough moments to ensure these discs will be spun time and time again.--Simon Brew
Advantages: the launch of a classic, great scripts and two comedic giants Disadvantages: no comedy will be everyones cup of tea
Little Britain has become a massive phenomenon in a very short space of time, though creators David Walliams and Matt Lucas certainly can't be accused of not having paid their dues to their craft. Like most of these apparent meteoric rises to fame, its probably been an over night success that's taken many years as the old saying goes. David Williams (name changed for his equity card) who describes himself as 6'2", left-handed, a little bit Welsh ... ...the radio 4 version of Little Britain. After two well received radio runs and a TV pilot, the first series was aired on television in 2003. Welcome to their weird world.
The premise behind the show is a look at a warped version of Britain through a series of sketches mainly featuring a recurring core of characters. The narration between the sketches, a successful hangover from the radio show, in itself is a great piece of writing and the coup of ...

...DVDs to take for watching. Little Britain season one was one such gift. I'd seen a few of the shows on TV and shown a mild interest in it, but I wasn't hooked on it or fussed either way.
The first time I watched the season through I was in hysterics. Each of the characters brings something different and you can follow their situation through the episodes. If you can't follow the many individual characters by watching episode to episode, there is ... ...become a universal sign for Little Britain fans.
A few characters in brief:
Vicky Pollard - 'No but yeah but no but what happened was…' Having been through the British public school system, it's a shockingly true representation of today's youth! Vicky Pollard is a juvenile delinquent, a teenage mother, a shoplifter, a bully, a thug …. The list continues. She also swaps her baby for a Westlife CD at some point (that might be season 2)
Daffyd Thomas ...

Advantages: It's just soooo funny! Disadvantages: There are none!
Little Britain is the best thing ever to grace British TV! The characters are pure comedy at it's best, and no matter how many times you watch each episode you will find yourself laughing every time. I do! If you become a true Little Britain fan like I have, then you just won't be able to help yourself from doing impersonations of Daffyd, the only gay in the village, or Vicky Pollard the chavvy teen mum. If you only buy one DVD this year, make it ... ...in Little Britain, and they adapt to each character in a hilarious and clever way, with great costumes - you will love the Bubbles DeVere fat suit!
If you want a laugh then this is a must have. In my opinion people who do not find this funny have something wrong with them!!! Some people may be put off by some of the more disgusting scenes such as Harvey breastfeeding from his mother even though he is a grown man, or the old lady who is always sick ...
