As with theBeauty and the BeastandPocahontassequels, most of the recognisable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick) and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love. This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European cinemas. For children, the sequel will be a favourite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby," was cowritten byBuffy the Vampire Slayercreator Joss Whedon. I personally didn't even know there was a sequel until I saw the poster online. I loved the first Lion King film so I decided to watch this one. ==The Plot==
The young Kiara
The movie starts with Rafiki (the old monkey) holding up a lion cub on the Pride Rock presenting it to the inhabitants of Pridelands. The cub is the child of Simba, the Lion King and Nala. The cub looks like male to me but it turns out that this lion cub is a girl named Kiara. Kiara is as adventurous as his father when he was young. Being so protective, Simba delegates his trusted friends, Timon and Pumbaa to be Kiara’s jolly baby-sitters.
In the first Lion King movie, Simba threw Scar’s allies away from the Pridelands when he knew that his borther Scar, initiated a plot to kill their father, King Mufasa. Scar died after a fight with Simba and Simba turned out to be King of the lions. In this movie, Simba prohibited Kiara to go beyond the borders of Pridelands to keep her away from danger as he knew that the outlander lions and hyenas might endanger his daughter’s life. Her father’s warning arouses her curiosity even more.
First encounter with the outlanders
One day, she manages to escape from Timon and Pumbaa and goes where her father warned her not to go. She finds herself in the outland playing with a male cub named Kovu who is Zira’s son. Zira was a loyal follower of Scar. When Zira arrives at the scene, she learns that Kiara is Simba’s daughter so she wants to kill her. Simba arrives and snatches Kiara from danger. Whilst on their way home, Simba scolded Kiara for disobeying his orders. In the outland, Zira tells Kovu to keep away from Kiara at first as she is the daughter of the king who pushed them away from the Pridelands which eventually caused their misery. However, Zira realizes that she can use her son’s friendship with Kiara to avenge Simba and the rest of the Pridelanders.
Scar’s chosen one
Kovu is the cub being hand-picked by Scar to follow his pawsteps and to take over the throne of King Simba which he desperately wanted when he was alive. Zira always reminds Kovu of Scar’s plan and that Kovu needs to carry on the task. Scar’s character is not that visible in this movie as he only appears in Simba’s dream but his name represents an important role in this movie.
Finding each other again
Being an adult now, Kiara goes out of Pridelands to have her first unguided hunt alone. She requests her father not to send Timon and Pumbaa to watch her and Simba promises not to. Unfortunately, Kiara sees her baby-sitters and she becomes furious with his father for lying to her and goes further away from Pridelands with a heavy heart.
Nuka and Vitani, Kovu’s brother and sister, set fire to the plains just near to where Kiara is hunting. Kiara faints due to smoke suffocation. Kovu rescues her from fire. Simba reluctantly thanks Kovu for saving his daughter’s life and allows him to come with them to Pridelands but he is only allowed to sleep outside Simba’s home.
Simba’s Nightmare
That night, Simba dreams about the death of his father and in his dreams , Kovu’s face transforms into Scar’s face and Simba takes the place of his father, King Mufasa, falling off the cliff. This brings me back to the scene in the first Lion King movie where Scar let his own father, Mufasa, die. When Simba wakes up, he seeks the guidance of the great kings who passed away. Nala gives him an advice to give Kovu a chance as he is not the evil Scar.
Lions in love
Whilst Kovu teaches Kiara to hunt, they have a good time chasing birds and other animals. Kovu finally confesses to Kiara his intentions and he finally decides to leave Pridelands. However, the old monkey Rafiki tries to stop Kovu from leaving and leads the two lions into a musical journey whilst the song ‘Upendi’ is sung and they experience love. Kovu then decides to stay in Pridelands. I find this musical journey with the song ‘Upendi’ entertaining and awesome. It is the counterpart of the song ‘Hakuna Matata’ from the first Lion King film.
The ambush
Simba tells Kovu the true story of Scar whilst the two have a walk. Kovu is surprised with Simba’s revelation of Scar’s evil identity as Zira never told him about it before. Suddenly, Zira, along with other members of the banished tribe of lions attacks Simba. After a heart-pounding lions’ fight and roars, Simba manages to escape and Nuka dies whilst chasing him. Zira blames Kovu for the death of his brother, Nuka and she swipes a paw across Kovu’s eye that causes a scar on it. The scar on his eye makes him look exactly like Scar. Running away from his mother, Kovu returns to Pridelands. Howver, Simba exiles him this time thinking that Kovu was behind the ambush. Simba confides Kiara to Pride Rock’s den but she manages to escape to reunite with Kovu away from the Pridelands.
Zira’s revenge
Zira, devastated by Nuka’s death and the betrayal of her other son, Kovu, gathers all the members of the banished tribe of lions and decides to attack King Simba and the Pridelanders. Once again, there’s a heart-thumping war of the lions. When Zira and Simba come face to face with each other, Kovu and Kiara leap in the middle of the two. This moment becomes the crucial decision-making moment for Kovu and Kiara. Will Kovu live up to his role to overpower King Simba’s throne as Scar and Zira pre-destined him to be? Will Kiara decide to continuously throw the outlanders away from Pridelands as an heir to her father’s throne?
Soundtrack
We are Oneby Cam Clark and Charity Sanoy
This is sung following Kiara’s first encounter with Kovu and the Zira where Zira wants to kill her. This contains King Simba’s inspirational words to Kiara which tells her that she is her father’s pride. This equates the song ‘Great Kings of The Past’ in the first Lion King movie where King Mufasa sings to young Simba.
He Lives In You by Lebo M and his African Choir
This song represents the birth of Kiara. It is equal to the song ‘Circle Of Life’ in the first movie where the young King Simba was presented to a crowd of animals.
My Lullaby by Suzanne Pleshette, Andy Dick, Crysta Macalush This is Zira’s lullaby to her son Kovu that tells him how happy would she be if Kovu kills Simba when he’s older. This is equivalent to the song ‘Be Prepared’ which was sung by Scar in the first Lion King movie when he outlined the plot to kill his brother Simba.
Upendi by Robert Gillaume, Liz Callaway, Gene Miller, Ladysmith Black Mambrazo
This is Rafiki’s song for Kiara and Kovu when both discover the love they have for each other. This is just like the song ‘Hakuna Matata’ in the first movie with Simba, Timon and Mumbaa.
Not One of Us
This is sung after Simba exiles Kovu from the Pridelands.
Love Will Find A Way by Liza Callaway, Gene Miller This is sung when Kiara and Kovu reunite after Simba exiles Kovu, and Kiara escapes from the Pridelands to follow Kovu.

Verdict
This movie is not as excellent as the first Lion King movie but when comparison doesn’t become an issue, this is a very good one. The soundtrack is not as great as the first one. The songs here don’t actually make hum at the end of the film. The storyline is great that I don’t want to skip any scene though it is predictable (oh, this is for kids, I remember).
Zira’s character is very powerful but the somewhat-masculine voice of Suzanne Pleshette made me think that the lioness was male at first. I wish a more feminine yet authoritative voice was picked for Zira’s character.
It’s good that the villains’ characters are emphasized by the dark circles around their eyes. If not, then it’s hard for viewers to recognize the bad characters from the good as the lions look almost exactly the same.
Where's Sazu? The viewers of the first Lion King movie would surely miss Sazu, the right-hand parrot of King Mufasa who talks too much. He can be barely seen on this sequel. The comedy scenes of this film are brought mostly by Timon and Pumbaa. Sazu perhaps has not been given his big share of the limelight because the voicing actor to his character has been replaced. Disney gives the same voice for everyone except for the bird Sazu. I do miss his funny character.
The DVD reception is good with its 1.66:1 aspect ratio but not really enhanced for widescreen television sets. The audio is crisp with its Dolby Digital 5.1 technology.browndoll

Review of Lion King II, The: Simba's Pride (Animated) (DVD)
Advantages: a sequel to a good film , quite short Disadvantages: aimed at younger people
...This edition to the Lion King series is possibly the best , far superior to the third and slightly better than the first . Although the first one has the best storyline and the third hasa the best music as it has the best songs from the first two.
Rewatchable Yes-this is one the younger kids love to watch and watch over again or my little sister does anywhere she likes it so much she helped me write this review . Enjoyability

Advantages: Good quality production Disadvantages: Dull story line
Although this sequel was released directly to the ‘Sell-through’ market it is of a better quality than similar Disney sequels. It easily surpasses the two Aladdin sequels and Pochahontas 2 in its production quality but falls just short of the standard required for a cinema release.
It is let down by the story line which shows little imagination and amounts to a clichéd re-telling of a theme seen a thousand times.
A lot of the original character ... ...and Neve Campbell are recruited as the principle ‘Stars’. The animation is of the highest quality and the soundtrack, though not reaching the dizzy heights of the first film, is still very, very good with Tina Turner recruited for the stand out track.
At 78 minutes the film is about the right length and represents a very enjoyable experience.
Unfortunately, as with all of Disney’s Region 2 DVDs, this disc represents very little in terms of value ...

Advantages: None - the film disappoints in all catergories. Disadvantages: Soundtrack, animation, plots etc, etc, etc .....
Being a huge Lion King fanatic I was keen to watch the sequel. I was anticipating a follow-up to match the first - something with compelling characters, stunning animation and a memorable soundtrack. I wanted to see Simba and Nala again, the beauty of the original continued in an intelligent sequel. Nothing less than this would be worthy of the Lion King.....Right?......
But 'Simba's Pride' is extremely disappoining. Something of the original energy ... ...monotonous and unoriginal and the soundtrack less than appalling. It is such a shame.
The film follows the story of Simba and Nala (the original 'Lion King' characters) and their child's exciting (well, supposedly) adventures. Predictably there is a romantic sub-plot, but the beautiful innocense of the original love scenes are completely lost here. I find it a shame that Disney have found it so crucial that they make a sequel. Apparently fuelled ...

Advantages: Brill film, great acting.... Disadvantages: none...........
...the continuing tale of Simba, Lion King II doesn't even come close to the original movie. Although my 4 year old liked it (he has a thing for lions), I have a different opinion. First of all, I don't think I can qualify this movie as a "sequel". In the original, there was no mention that Scar (the villain) had his own pride of lions. In the sequel, this pride (led by Zera) is the main focus of the movie. Zera holds a grudge against Simba and his ... ...songs can't compare the original Lion King. Also, I was pleased to note that many of the characters' voices returned, along with a few new ones. I think that Disney could of done a better job with the sequel, or even better, left the original alone. So this is my opinion but see the film and make up your own mine. ...

My children have watched this film over and over again. The new characters are good and its good to still see timon and pumba in this one as well. The baddies in the film were alot better than the one before but not as evil looking as scar. they just looked a bit scraggy. The over all continuation of the movie is great. the ending of the film wasnt what i expected (the uniting of the two prides) but it was still very good. I will be watching the next one (lionking three ) as i hope it will be as good as the previous two.The kids love it and the big kids (me) love it as well. excellent film a+++++. ...
Advantages: great storyline don't loose interest Disadvantages: Scar's gone
My daughter and I both loved the first edition, particulary the hyenas. Thankfully the hyenas are still in the second story. We loved the hyena who had the hysterical laughter, each time he laughed we laughed till we cried. In the first one particulary loved the evil Scar, and thought maybe the second one would not be as good as his character had been killed off. It did lack that magic that Scar brought with the first one, but it was still very funny, and at times very sad. The music was great, and the characters are memorable. Would gladly recommend for any ages. Great for watching anytime of the day. It would be even better if watched with an extremely large bag of popcorn. I paid seventeen pound from Woolworths for this Dvd, but ebay sell them for £10.00, and Amazon sell for 11.99 for new and used. ...
