Limp Bizkit et al, Live in Texas is a concise, no-frills two-disc DVD/CD souvenir of the muscular Linkin Park live experience. 5.1 Surround Sound captures every nuance of Brad Delson's explosive guitar, the incendiary turntable flourishes of DJ Joseph Hahn, and the interplay between MC Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington (although the audience singalong on "Numb" gets lost across the barricades), as the sextet runs through a tight set of selections drawn exclusively from its bestsellers Hybrid Theory and Meteora, with the big hits ("Crawling," "In the End") programmed toward the climax. Casual fans may grumble about the absence of extras--there's no backstage-with-the-band documentary or viewing angle options, no previously unreleased songs--but hardcore devotees (who get plenty of face time on the DVD) should appreciate the opportunity to revisit the thrills of Linkin Park in concert whenever they wish. --Kurt B Reighley

I think Hybrid Theory was a great debut album, setting Linkin Park ahead of their peers and deservedly selling bucket loads. My cynical side says they’re milking it a little though. Over six million sales of the long awaited follow-up Meteora, yet they’ve still felt the need for a remix album and now live CD/DVD package in that time… Still Live In Texas coincides with a UK tour and comes just in time for Christmas, so maybe it’s to be expected.
Life In Texas is technically a CD with bonus DVD I believe. It comes in a special 2CD card fold-out digipak (much like Nine Inch Nails’ The Fragile). On Amazon.co.uk it’s listed both as a CD with bonus DVD (£9.99) and a DVD (still with CD) at £16.99! As far as I know (and I’m pretty certain) they’re exactly the same package…
The CD
The CD itself draws twelve tracks from the Summer Sanatorium shows in Houston and Dallas (with Mudvayne, Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Metallica), and covering both albums pretty well (plus ‘P5hng Me A*wy’ - a mellowed out version of the original that does sound both different and good). Obviously the sound isn’t as polished as their studio albums, but it doesn’t suffer too much as they’ve still used pro-tools to polish up the rough edges. Despite that though, it still sounds a little flat. ‘Crawling’ in particular was never my favourite song, but here drawing towards the end of the set it still lacks the energy and anger you’d expect. Polite cheers between songs suggest the crowd are hardly going wild either.
That’s not to say the album’s a complete disappointment by any means - including (by my count) seven hit singles from ‘Somewhere I Belong’ to ‘One Step Closer’ it certainly showcases a band at the peak of the commercial side of nu-metal. Perhaps the main disappointment is that, despite drawing on two shows, the CD runs to just over 40 minutes.
The DVD
This basically covers the same show, but includes an extended 17 songs tracklist, including personal favourite ‘With You’. That aside, there’s not much on offer - no extra features, just shots of the band in action - but it’s still better to picture the event.
It is quite nice to see the band in live action, but it’s not something you really want to watch many times over (I’ve said before that music DVDs are only for real fans). The footage stays mostly on the two frontmen on stage and DJ Mr Hahn - there are odd shots of the crowd and occasionally the band back stage (between songs) but it’s nothing particularly interesting. I thought it quite unfortunate that the footage sometimes showed empty seats in the stadium, or people walking about aimlessly in the background. That and Chester’s shirt looks *really* sweaty (ew, lovely).
If you think of it as a ‘bonus DVD’ I guess it’s quite good, but it definitely fails to fulfil the potential of a DVD. That’s a shame really, because like I said the DVD is surely the main draw of this package - the CD offering little really ‘new’ while the DVD includes a considerably expanded set list if nothing else.
Technical DVD details: Picture format NTSC 4:3 1 viewing angle(!) All regions Duration 68 minutes Dolby digital/2.0 stereo/5.1 surround sound
Conclusion
So, cynical Christmas marketing or a real treat for fans? Well, a bit of both really. I wouldn’t say this is anything to get too excited about. As you’d expect though it’s a very slickly produced package that will certainly please a few fans at Christmas. I’d buy the albums first though.
Advantages: immaculate live performance Disadvantages: not much else
...I am a huge Linkin Park fan, but do understand that they are not the fairest to there fans when it comes to material that they release. 'Re-animation' for example - a remix album of 'Hybrid Theory' brought out to fill the void prior to the release of 'Meteora'. This is an example of their record label (Warner Bros) exploiting their fans because they know that the fans will stay loyal to the band regardless. But to bring out re-animation as a stop-gap ... ...Deftones and is done in Linkin Park's well-known perfect manner. The quality of the recording is extremely crisp, so much so that you can hear even the faintest words mumbled from Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda's mouths.
The one thing that has always been held against Linkin Park is their lack of communication to the crowd. Here we hear very little from the band except for little things like 'lets do this people' which quite frankly as far ...

Advantages: Excellent DVD/CD pack Disadvantages: CD doesn't have the whole performance
...have read my review on Linkin Parks debut album Hybrid Theory, then you will know my thoughts on the band.
I went to see Linkin live at the Birmingham NIA back in November 2003 and evidently I prefered that to the DVD. I watched the DVD after I went to the concert (it was out before but i waited).
I was a bit dissappointed because on the UK tour they did extra tracks like 'Nobody's listening', ' My December' and 'Get Down' (Linkin only), although ... ...suppose to make it more exclusive on the DVD, but in the car I wanted to listen to them all so I made my own CD with the whole performance.
Basicly if you like Linkin and you want something to listen to thats a bit rawer, this won't disappoint. ...

Linkin park are a terrific Nu-Metal band who have broken through most in the last few years. Their first album, hybrid theory was excellent but was quite a heavy listening album. I wasn't too keen on this album at first but what i particularly like about Linkin Park is that you can relate to most of their songs, therefore they grow on you and now theyre my favourite band!
I went to see Linkin live in Manchester back in November 2003. I was quite ... ...bought this particular album because Linkin Park are the best band i have EVER seen live and they get the crowd involved constantly.

Advantages: Well captured and performed, good set list, good price 4 a double disk Disadvantages: should have more on DVD!
Having seen linkin park twice before I was excited at the prospect of a new live release, but I was also concerned that the full power of the band might not be acurately captured on a dvd. Luckily the DVD captures the performance well and is excellent both musically and aesthetically. The CD is useful for those of us who aren;t lucky enough to have cinema sound and still want good quality stereo sound!
In my opinion live shows are always beter than ... ...for money way to see Linkin Park without the £40 concert ticket price tag!!
The DVD picture quality is crisp and the sound quality on both the CD and DVD are difficult to fault. The musicianship is great and the sound is balanced well (especially for an outdoor concert)! The band is also slightly heavier live than recorded, so great if you prefer Rock to Pop.
HIGH-LIGHTS
The opener (Don't Stay) sounds ferocious and sets the tone for the rest of ...

...to the positives, for a Linkin Park fan who lives in the UK this is perfect, they are doing no tours in the UK in 2004 (after Projekt Revolution they are going to work on their new album) and do this will keep any fan ticking over too next year.
Now for another negative, they could have picked a better concert to record, some of their more recent concerts especially have contained some unreleased track (at download, the only show they did in the ... ...one unreleased song and one song they did in a collaberation with another artist, remixed for just linkin park.
In conclusion, a good CD for Linkin Park fans, but non-fans may not enjoy it.
