How does Disney hope to make an animated film sucessful? they do it by infusing the movie with three elements:
1 - By setting it on Earth
2 - Grounding itself in comend
3 - Keeping Elvis Presley alive.

Lilo and Stitch uses all of this and more in order to coerce audiences into theatres, and in the process, creating a film that produces fun and enjoyment for the whole family. As ever, the animation is classy, benefitting from the strong craftmanship of the studio and here it is mixed to some quite beautiful watercolour backgrounds later on. The film starts out aboard the standard spaceship, populated by a morass of alien races of quirky design. Interestingly the filmmakers have opted for a strong aquatic design for much of the cast creatures - which protagonists resembling all manner of fish, squid and whales which makes for a distinctive and homogenous feel to the production.
Similarly the spaceships seen at the start manage to carry the aquatic milieu forward with the craft looking like huge ocean liners and futurist speed boats.

Only Stitch himself benefits form the distinction of difference here - closely resembling a four armed Koala he is perhaps the most mischievous creation of the studio, designed by his creators for mass destruction of cities, he makes great light of his capture and sets about causing havoc onboard the spaceship as he escapes. But in himself he is equally nascent in nastiness, drooling and picking at his ears and acting like a naughty child when he finally makes it to Earth. He is a bundle of trouble and attitude - a whirling dervish of energy andmotion, as enjoyable to watch as much as he must have been to animate. Lilo and her extended family are themselve as equally well drafted and executed though it is only Lilo who is developed and further in terms of charecter.

As mentioned earlier the scenes on Earth where most of the film takes place are majestically rendered via colourful watercolours of bright and luminous hues. This is an interesting choice and one no used very often which makes for a welcome and distinctive stylistic choice. Onto this the directors place a slew of visual jokes which make light of the fish out of water scenario of an almost indestructable monster who has no emotion, thrust into a world of a small girl on a island where there is virtually nothing to destroy. An interesting comination of the two main characters similar situations, characteristics and foibles is used to develop the story as Stitch moves form survival instinct through admiration and so forth to its logical conclusion.

A superb and sustained visual joke concerning Stitch trying to become the King works extremely well and smaller gags such as Stitch creating and destroying a mini San Francisco in Lilos bedroom are every bit good. In addition some well devoloped slapstick style action and chase scenes also appear at various points and provide furthur energetic animated visuals. Vocal casting is similarly well handled, though less interestingly than more recent production, with Ving Rhames as the fantastically well names Cobra Bubbles managing to steal the show with a slew of well pronounced lines.

In totality then, the film is a very good addition to the recent collection of Disney production, once agin demonstrating the company's willingness to work in other avenues outside of its fairytale traditional scheme of work.

Had to sit and watch this once while babysitting - was torture but at least it kept the kids quiet! Lucie xxx

I love this film! We've seen it over and over, and I still laugh at the jokes and feel for Lilo and Stitch's loneliness.
