A tale of family values, interstellar travel and Elvis. Lilo and Stitch tells the tale of a young girls encounter with the galaxies most wanted extraterrestrial!
LILO
Lilo is a sweet yet confused orphan constantly in conflict Nani, her sister and guardian. Life has been a series of emotional battles and supports since their parents were killed in a car crash and Lilo especially has become lonely and withdrawn. She struggles with Nani to cope with the difficulty of constructing a new family where elder sister must also play parent. Lilo tries to fit in, have friends, but her quirky and sometimes naughty behaviour results in her being out cast, which perpetuates her loneliness, when all she wants is someone to love who won’t leave her.
STITCH
Experiment 626 (Stitch) is a genetic experiment from another planet. He has been created by Dr. Jumba Jookiba to be a fighting machine He is flame and bullet proof, with binocular and night vision capabilities, acute senses of smell and sonar hearing and high mental functions he can also receive and transmit microwave energies via antenna on his head, all this along with his very destructive nature makes him the ultimate weapon. (His only down side is he has very high density, so he would sink like a stone in water, making bodies of water his only fear).
STORY
Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who, after wishing on star for someone to love, adopts what she thinks is an ugly dog who she names Stitch. Stitch would be perfect if only he wasn't actually an escaped genetic experiment from another galaxy who has crash landed on earth in his attempt to get away from the Galactic Federation who want him to be destroyed for being dangerous. Their relationship develops as they both learn what it is to be good friends, and through her love, faith and unwavering devotion to Ohana (the Hawaiian concept for family) she gives stitch the only thing he wasn't programmed to have; the ability to care for someone else.
THE FILM
It has wit, Disney's family values (but not in the old traditional sense), and is both child and adult entertainment. It has some fantastically funny moments; Stitch's Elvis impersonations and his storming of a fake Chicago are delightful. The development of Lilo & Stitch's friendship as they learn to give and negoiate around thenselves and others is nice. It looses the plot a little at the very end with an eclectic collection of alien and human hooha, but there's a nice message under it all of how many shapes a family can be, and the validity of DNA experiments. I enjoyed this fun trip to Hawaii, and I should think you would too.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Kids will like it, Elvis soundtrack, ocassional funny moment, 'cute' if you like that kind of thing Disadvantages: Lazy, lazy production. Disney morals(again), no surprises, not a classic Disney movie by any stretch of the imagination
Advantages: lovely quality of drawn animation, positive messages, realistic body forms and facial feautres Disadvantages: some of the extras could have been left off without harm
Advantages: Great soundtrack from Elvis, Original characters and nice family plot line Disadvantages: Its mad that the characters actually believe Stitch is a dog when he is clearly an alien!!
