DVD Description
John LeTour (Willem Dafoe) is loyal, decent, lumbering--a 40-year-old drug runner who suffers from insomnia but seems to be sleep-walking through life in LIGHT SLEEPER. When John's boss, the bubbly but sharp-witted Ann (Susan Sarandon), decides to retire, John must rethink his life's path. But breaking out of the life he's led will take some doing, especially after coming into contact with his ex-girlfriend (Dana Delany), a recovering drug addict, and becoming embroiled in a mysterious murder. This gently haunting drama is all the more interesting because of the wonderful performances of the actors, the film's steady, relaxed pace, and the careful way all the colors of each character are drawn out.

"...The clean, hard-edged compositions and fluid camera movements have a precision and spontaneity..." (Sight and Sound, p.54-5, 01/04/1992)
Advantages: Wonderful true story with great acting Disadvantages: Not so great soundtrack
...Sleepers is an excellent film based on the even better novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra. In the novel, Carcaterra claims that the story is based on the true story of what he himself experienced as a child with his three friends. The film repeats this claim which was considered by many to be misleading.
The story starts by showing us the lives of several of the inhabitants of an area of New York known as Hells Kitchen. We meet four young teenage boys who are the closest of friends and the main characters of out story: Lorenzo, Michael, Tommy and John. We also get to meet people from their neighbourhood who they grew up with.
After a childish prank goes wrong and a man ends up in hospital because of it, the boys are sent to a detention centre, sentenced to serve approximately a year each for their crime. While imprisoned their lives...

Advantages: A compelling story of violence, abuse, revenge and above all, friendship Disadvantages: A harrowing story, definitely not light viewing
...Sleepers is a chilling story, and one that is made all the more powerful simply because everything in it is based on real events. It is the story of four young friends who live in the Hell’s Kitchen area of Manhattan, a tough area full of tough men, run by a respected gangster known as King Benny, and populated by a mix of immigrant families from all over Europe. The boys – Shakes, Tommy, John and Mikey – spend their summer days running errands for King Benny, and catching some sun on the roof of their apartment block, while Shakes tries to avoid his father’s violent outbursts and seems to spend much of time comforting his beaten mother.
Much of his free time was spent in the company of the genial Father Bobby (played superbly by Robert De Niro) at the local church – Shakes and John often worked there as...
