I know what you are thinking Lethal Weapon (LW hereafter) was a great film and a big hit world wide. Then came Lethal Weapon 2 and 3 which were also succesful. But how many film series have a fourth "episode" that is actually worth watching? Many film series like Police Academy are great for the first few but go downhill steadily after mumber three. But Lethal Weapon has an on screen chemistry that makes each new film as good if not better than the one before.
I would be very surprised if anyone reading this has never seen one of the LW films before but just in case the two main characters are Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Who play two very different cops working together with their very contrasting styles. The Lethal weapon series are run of the mill clicheed crime figthing action films. Your typical good cop (Danny Glover) bad cop (Mel Gibson) action if you will - with the final scenes always involving the downfall of the main villan!
I am not going to give the plot away for this film but the story revolves around the smuggling of chinese immigrants and the Triad. That's all I am going to tell you, as to tell you anymore could ruin the story line!
Storyline aside, LW4 has many of the supporting cast that made previous LW films so good! Rene Russo is back after the fight scenes in LW3 but is heavily pregnant so does very little fighting! Joe Pesci is his usual self as the extremely funny Leo Getts! It is this team of main characters that keep LW4 fresh and continues the success of LW.
Lethal Weapon 4 keeps this chemistry but adds new characters to the mixing pot! Well known Black American Comdeian/film star stars as a rookie police detective that just so happens to Danny Glovers characters son-in-law. His comedy genius is not fully utilised in this movie but he is an excellent addition!
The most important addition is the main "baddie" brought in especially for that one film! In every Lethal Weapon the main villan has been fantastic! LW4 is no exception! Jet Li plays this baddie as well as Alan Rickman does in Die hard. Jet Li is amazing, there is no other word to describe him! His moves are out of this world. Many people won't have heard of him before but he is the next Jackie Chan/Bruce Lee. He is very big in China/Hong Kong but normally only plays the good guy!
I have seen this film twice now and would watch it again when it comes on TV! None of the LW films are classics because they are not produced to be! Simple certificate 15 action/comedy films that are possibly the best in this genre!
In my opinion the LW series is by far the best series of films - second only to Star Wars. I would recommend every Lethal weapon film to anyone that hasn't seen them before. LW4 is possibly the last as the Gibson and Glover are getting older! As an individual film I would recommend it to action lovers that like a little comedy in their movies!
