In the fourth and reportedly final film of theLethal Weaponseries, director Richard Donner ... more
reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organised crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Rene Russo and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with theLethalseries, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth instalment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flame-thrower, a burning building and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humour is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of theLethalfilms, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen.--Jeremy Storey

Cast List *********
Mel Gibson – Detective Sergeant Martin Riggs Danny Glover – Detective Sergeant Roger Murtagh Joe Pesci – Leo Getz Chris Rock – Lee Butters Jet Li – Wah Sing Ku Rene Russo – Lorna Cole Kim Kahn – Uncle Benny
The Story *********
Riggs, Murtagh and Leo Getz are on Murtaghs boat fishing. Sideswiped by a large freighter, as always happens with these guys, a gun battle ensues. After the battle, the hapless heroes discover that the freighter is full of illegal Chinese immigrants. Murtagh goes back to his wrecked boat to rescue a few token souvenirs. In doing so he stumbles across Mr Hong and his family hiding out. Pulling heavily on his heart strings, Murtagh strikes up a friendship with the Hong's and decides to do what he can to help them by letting them stay in his home, this proves to be a very costly mistake.
Leo Getz, now a private investigator, is often away on his own crooked business and the gap is filled by Sergeant Lee Butters. Butters is particularly friendly towards Murtagh. Murtagh is confused and even concerned by this "special attention", he later finds out why!
Riggs, in the mean time, has his own concerns. Heavily pregnant, his girlfriend Lorna Cole secretly wants to get married. Riggs picks up on her concerns but is uncertain of what to do about it. His first wife was murdered, could he really go through it all again?
Further into the investigation, Riggs, Murtagh and Butters are led to Uncle Benny, a Chinatown crime boss. Here they also encounter Wah Sing Ku, a leader in the greatly feared Chinese triads. Ku and our hero's take an instant dislike to each other. Tempers flare and when Ku finds out that the Hong's are seeking refuge in Murtaghs home, he sets out to get them back, using excessive force to say the least.
Ku has a reason for wanting the Hong's back, however, if you want to know more, you will just have to see the film!
Characters and Actors *********************
Mel Gibson plays a slightly more sane and subdued Martin Riggs. Still a touch on the reckless side, Riggs has calmed down somewhat from the previous "Lethal Weapon" movies. His character has developed into a more sane person due to the influence of his girlfriend Lorna, the impending baby and the general effects of the realisation that he is not as young as he used to be. Good performance by Gibson, who has starred in all the previous "Lethal Weapon" films as well as "Conspiracy Theory", "Braveheart" and many more.
Danny Glover plays Sergeant Sergeant Murtagh, devoted father and husband. He is still waiting to retire and has been ever since the first film. An interesting and very amusing sub plot involving Sergeant Butters keeps his character fresh. On screen the relationship between Murtagh and Riggs is at an all time high and this glues the whole film together. Best known for the "Lethal Weapon" his only other really noticable performance was as the "Pray" in the film "Predator 2".
Joe Pesci is superb as the "cheeky little chappie crook" we all love to hate, Leo Getz. Stuttering through his lines like a true professional, Pesci's character has moved on from the selfish crook in the first film into a much softer character. Leo lights up the screen, is a joy to watch and will make you scream with laughter at his "inspector Clueso" bungling antics. Pesci, well he is one of those actors you would expect to get type cast because of his appearance. But he has played a wide variety of roles from gangsters to landlords. He can be seen in a variety of films, I would recommend "Goodfellas" if you want to see him at his best, although he does give mighty performances in all the "Lethal Weapon" films.
Sergent Butters played by Chris Rock is a new addition to the team and a welcome one at that. Rock has been a stand up comedian and it shows. Butters relationship with Murtagh contains some of the films funniest lines and they are delivered by him in style. He has been in a lot more films than most people realise. Did you recognise him in "Dogma"? His character shared the support acting role with Leo Getz and it works very well in the film!
Jet Li, a man very familiar with the martial arts fanatics, he plays Wah Sing Ku. Ku is cool, calculated and very loyal to his real family and the triads. An evil man, his role required far more martial arts skills than acting and Li is just the man for the job. Jet Li started learning Wushu (China's national sport based on various fighting styles) at the age of nine. He was a national coach for the sport before he was twenty. Arguably the biggest Asian movie star since Bruce Lee, his expertise is clear on screen and makes the fight scenes in "Lethal Weapon 4" by far the best out of all of them. He was lined up for the role of Li Mu Bia in "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", but turned it down. The role was eventually filled by Chow Yun Fat who became instantly famous because of it. Was it a mistake by Li? possibly, but he will never be short of work!
Renee Russo doesn't really have much to say as the understanding girlfriend to Riggs, and because of this it is hard to really say much about her performance. Definitely a low key role but performed adequately enough.
Kim Kahn plays Uncle Benny. Benny by name and Benny by nature. Resembling Benny Hill rather than a tough chinese mob boss, he plays a comic character in the film. Whether this was intentional I really don't know. Anyway, he made me laugh, so he did a fine job in my book!
Director/directing ******************
Known for his action and/or fantasy style films, Richard Donner has excelled himself. The film is fast and furious and runs along seamlessly. Some great action shots that are very original, including a bit of motorway table surfing! "LostBoys", "Omen", "Superman" and "Conspiracy Theory" are a few films out of many, many projects. Hardworking yet not really an exceptional director (although I expect a lot of people may disagree with this statement!). This is one of his best, great action, the timing of the humour was abosolutely fantastic.
Soundtrack **********
Nothing to write home about, gives a bit of atmosphere but really nothing special
Humour/Action *************
Great, that's really how I would some it up. Some really fun storylines to break up the action and suspense. Very much used to keep you on a roller coaster ride of laughter and suspense. The films appeal really comes from the combination of these two aspects and the fact that they are so well balanced and timed throughout!
Overall View ************
The king of all sequels, far better than all the other "Lethal Weapon" films in it's own right. Compared to other action/comedy films of the same genre such as "Beverly Hills cop", etc it rises well above. The film is written in such a way that you could view this without seeing the previous films and still enjoy virtually all of it (although seeing the first three will get you familiar with the characters and will add a bit to the enjoyment!) The ending is quite unusual for these type of films, it is very funny rather than dramatic, but I like it because it is original to end such a film in this way. Good acting, great script, exceptional direction, fast action, well timed humour, this film has it all. Well worth sitting through the 2 hours of screen time. One to watch or even buy. If all sequels were made to this standard, I would be a very happy bunny!
Advantages: Decent action film Disadvantages: Lost political messages, too repetitive
Lethal Weapon 4 is the final in the quadrilogy of films from director Richard Donner and starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as maverick cops Riggs and Murtaugh. It follows on from Lethal Weapon 3, although there is a six year gap between the films themselves. Lethal Weapon 4 introduces an oriental aspect to the film, with action star Jet Li lending his considerable martial arts talents to the franchise.
The Plot
Murtaugh uncovers a Chinese smuggling ... ...new. The result is that Lethal Weapon is virually a replica of the previous three films and ends up being a little mundane. It was Jet Li's first American film, and opened a door for him to pursue other roles, but his performance was swallowed up by the buddy cop concept of the film.
Lethal Weapon 4 had some impressive political messages to send out, and tackled the issues of immigration and racism, but with comedy elements woven into it as with ...

Lastly B-roll footage cut from the film. ...know what you are thinking Lethal Weapon (LW hereafter) was a great film and a big hit world wide. Then came Lethal Weapon 2 and 3 which were also succesful. But Lethal Weapon has an on screen chemistry that makes each new film as good if not better than the ... ...their very contrasting styles. The Lethal weapon series are run of the mill clicheed crime figthing action films. Your typical good cop (Danny Glover) bad cop (Mel Gibson) action if you will - with the final scenes always involving the downfall of the main villan!
