Every Lethal Weapon film is a blast! All of the films are packed with, violence, both fun and serious; they are full with comedy, thrills and even at times, romance. The Lethal Weapons are classic films, which I consider to be the greatest police movies ever made. When I first started writing reviews for Ciao, I did not want to start on a Lethal Weapon film, as I did not feel I could do the film any justice. This is my ninth review, coming up to two months of joining, and I will now try to write a decent review on the series and Lethal Weapon 3!!
(Like I observed someone else had added on a review, if you do not wish do read about some plot points in the films, do not go on reading!!).
There are four Lethal Weapon movies, none of which are given any additional titles, just ‘Lethal Weapon 1,2,3 and 4’. Depending on your taste you will have different favourites, my personnel favourite from the quadrilogy is Lethal Weapon 2 – this is simply because there are many remember-able scenes (such as the toilet scene) as will as great characters, it also links up well with the original Lethal Weapon. (I plan to write a review on this soon). Nevertheless every Lethal Weapon film has its remembrance. Each being very enjoyable and equally addictive.
General Information on the Lethal Weapon series. In lethal Weapon 1, Mel Gibson plays a suicidal cop, who has recently lost his wife in a car accident. Danny Glover
plays aged family man cop who doesn’t normally push himself to the limit. In the first film a dangerous investigation forces Briggs (Gibson) and Murtock (Glover) to work together as partners. Throughout the movie comical bickering and sarcasm emerges. The film ends seeing Gibson scrapping the idea of suicide. Lethal Weapon 2 sees Briggs practically living off Murtock’s family being close friends and a partner, although he does have a dog and a caravan at a near by beach. This film introduces Joe Pesci as a witness they have been assigned to protect. This time they try to stop a group of African’s money laundering, who just happen to have Diplomatic Immunity! Even more comedy than the first with great scenes, characters and has the unexpected link with the original – that was one of the African’s murdered Gibson’s wife, all those years ago. You can just imagine the anger that Mel shares out. Lethal Weapon 3 – see after 4. Still the badest cops around, Briggs and Murtock cause more destruction and death than ever in this more comical and more emotional Lethal Weapon come back, Lethal Weapon 4. Now pestered by lonely Joe Pesci, who they protected in number 2, Lethal Weapon 4 begins with the three on a fishing trip, which is put to a halt when a Chinese oil/like ship drives past their boat and into a beach, which just happens to be full of Chinese immigrants being sold as slaves. Briggs and Murtock try to bring down the complicated corruption right outside their back door. Lethal Weapon 4 introduces Chris Rock as Murtock’s future proposed son-in-law. As normal the movie is packed full of gags and laughter.Lethal Weapon 3 When I think of Lethal Weapon 3 I think of Danny Glover, giving an award – deserving performance as a cop having a breakdown when he kills, in self – defence, one of his son’s schoolmates, involved in drugs and weapons. This is the first you see of an emotional side to Glover in the series, which he plays brilliantly. Lethal Weapon 3 has Gibson finding new love when he meets Internal Affairs agent – the brilliant Rene Russo.
Story Lethal Weapon 3 has the most comical introduction of the series, when Briggs, after persuading Murtock, try and disarm a bomb in a multi-story building – without waiting for the bomb squad!! Because of the result (The building exploding) the troubled twosome are put on traffic duty, just days before Murtock’s retirement.
Being in the wrong place at the wrong time – The pair witness two fake security men try to steal a large quantity of money in a security van. They manage to stop them in a terrific car chase, which coincidently gets them back their badges, on to a case. This is when Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) visits the station as Internal Affairs thinking it was an inside job, at first clashing with both the detectives. After the killing of the remaining prisoner of the security heist was recorded inside Briggs and Murtock’s station, they realise it is ex – cop Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson). Returning from the second, Joe Pesci gives a helping hand it showing Briggs and Murtock where Travis normally hangs out, the Ice ring (knowing this from the day where he was involved in criminal activities.) After a close shave at the Ice ring, Travis gets away and continues to build a housing Estate in the desert, whilst importing guns. After Murtock’s breakdown, the three, Russo, crack down and find Travis’s housing Estate. Leaving a super action packed last battle.
Background Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 were both certificated as 18’s being bloodier, Lethal Weapon 3 is a 15 and so is 4. Lethal Weapon 3 is 118 minutes long: 1 hour and 58 minutes. It was made in 1992 and like all the others; directed by Richard Donner. Shane Black also wrote all the Lethal Weapons. Obviously it was made in America and the language used was English. The film took about 1 year to make and all returning characters were happy to participate. Lethal Weapon 3 is, of course, on DVD and costs about £8.99 singly in your local HMV. Recently you can now buy Lethal Weapon 1,2,3 and 4 in a special box set for only £24.99. Lethal Weapon 3 on DVD includes: The Motion Picture Trailers Production notes Surround sound compatible and the usual audio and visual options.
Looking into it, it sadly appears to be the case that Mel Gibson thinks he is too old to do another Lethal Weapon or Mad Max so the possibility of Lethal Weapon 5, looks extremely unlikely.
Evaluation Most people have at least seen one Lethal Weapon movie, making them extremely successful. They are good films and they do deserve a lot of credit. Lethal Weapon 3 I though was very, very good. I really did enjoy the last battle scene; it was a great bit of action. Rene Russo played a good part, as did Joe Pesci and Stuart Wilson. I give this film 10 out of 10 as I could not see any faults. The Lethal Weapons age like Sean Connery or a fine bottle of Scotch. Fantastic!!
