Berlioz: Les Troyens (LSO) - Hector Berlioz

Berlioz: Les Troyens (LSO) - Hector Berlioz

The epic tale of the fall of Troy haunted Berlioz from childhood and inspired some of his ... more

most passionately dramatic, richly colourful
music. This is Colin Davis's second recording of
Les Troyens, following his 1969 version.
Magnificent though it was, some reckoned that
reading lacked something in zip, but such
reservations could never, ever apply here.
Recorded across several lavishly praised concert
performances in London in December 2000, this
Troyens has an extraordinary electricity and
rhythmic drive. Ben Heppner combines lyricism with
heroic strength as Aeneas; Michelle de Young as
Dido, though not erasing memories of Janet Baker'
s brilliance in the role, produces a ravishing,
creamy sound. Both perhaps lack the last ounce of
character (and their French is occasionally
flat-vowelled). Petra Lang as Cassandra is
attention-grabbing from the start of the opera
with her panache and commitment. Also catching the
ear are Stephen Milling's granite-like Narbal and
Sara Mingardo's bewitching Anna. The LSO gives its
magnificent all, and the London Symphony Chorus is
likewise in terrific form, although some will miss
the clear-cut timbre of a fully-fledged opera
chorus. The ultimate stars, though, are Berlioz
and his faithful champion Davis. --Andrew Green

I'm A Big Clumsy Hector

Advantages: A trip down memory lane
Disadvantages: None

I had never had the fortune to see Hectors House until around two years ago. Having seen the Virgin One Account adverts I was intrigued to see that there was a Hectors House DVD. Hectors House was a cleverly made French Children's puppet show, the show otherwise known as La Maison de Tu Tu in France was made in 1965. The French variation had 50 five minute episodes. When the show became a massive hit the people behind shows such as the Herbs bought Hectors House to the UK. They only bought 30 of the episodes as the rest were not considered to blend in well with the British Children's audience. They dubbed the French voices into English and a sure-fire hit was created. The show was screened in the UK consistently for five years. But since 1971 the show has not been aired on UK terrestrial television. Hectors house is a continuing ...

Review of Hector's House (DVD)

Do you hear the people singing along with Les Mis the DVD?

Advantages: Great Cast, Great Musical, The Extra performance of Do You Hear the People Sing and One Day More.
Disadvantages: No the full score.

Les Miserables is a near-perfect show. It has great songs and brilliant characters which are often portrayed by brilliant actors. There is no finer display of this casting than the Anniversary DVD. The original Valjean, Colm Wilkinson has not lost any of his wonderful voice and his counter-part Javert, Philip Quast, is equally as 'on-form'. Ruthie Henshall and Lea Salonga are also fine at their parts and the original Marius, Michael Ball is fantastic as usual. Michael Maguire's American accent makes a nice change and provides the perfect voice for Enjolras. As Les Miserables is a predominantly stationairy show anyway, the lack of movement in the DVD is not a problem. The characters are in costume and do a fair amount of moving making the DVD really seem like Les Mis. The songs are well sung by all and there no weak links in the show ...

Review of Les Miserables (DVD)

Nothing Miserable about "Les Miserables"

Advantages: The most amazing musical EVER !!
Disadvantages: Should be twice as long !!!!!

I've only ever seen one musical in the West End ..... guess which one !!! I've actually seen "Les Miserables" twice and would many more times if given the chance. Les Miserables is widely recognised as the World's most popular musical. 10 years after it's opening night, the 1996 10th Anniversary concert which took place at The Royal Albert Hall, has become almost as legendary as the show itself. This amazing production is one of the most remarkable performances of Les Miserables ever put together, with the full magnificance of the score accompanied by the outstanding Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The "Dream Cast" put together for this production includes over 250 performers with some of the West End's top musical actors taking the lead roles, many of these stars have appeared in the show worldwide. A bit about "Les ...
