This film was first released in 1994 and over the years I have seen it a few times. Then on mothers day my wonderful children bought it for me along with the dvd of love actually. So seeing as there was a few ops about love actually and none about legends of the fall I decided to write about this one.

Jim Harrison bases the film on a novel. I can’t comment on the book, as I haven’t read it yet.

The film tells the story of a family of a man and his three sons who live on a ranch in the foothills of the Montana Rockies in the 1900s. The film is told through the memories of an old Indian man who used to work for the family and through letters various members of the family had sent to each other.

The mains cast and character description.

DECKER Played by Paul Desmond.
As I said before the story is told through his eyes. He had worked for the family for a very long time. He wouldn’t speak a word of English even thought he could understand it. He was married and had a daughter called Isabel two. She was called Isabel two because Mrs Ladow was also called Isabel.

COLONEL WILLIAM LADLOW played by Anthony Hopkins.
He originally was in the army and fought against the Indians but became disheartened by the whole thing and decided to leave the army and concentrate on working on his ranch and bringing up his three sons. His wife leaves him when his children are still young, as she cannot handle the cold winters on the ranch.

ALFRED LADLOW played by Aidan Quinn.
Alfred is the oldest of the Colonels sons and is the most sensible. He is injures his leg in world war one and sent home early from the war. He later Becomes a lawyer and eventually the Mayor of a near by town. He has never got on with his younger brother Tristan.

SAMUEL LADLOW played by Henry Thomas
Samuel is the youngest of the three brothers. He is engaged to marry Susannah Finncannon. He is determined to join the army and fight in the First World War. He gets his wish on the understanding that his two brothers got to war with him. Sadly he is killed in action after taken the place of a man who has been injured and the family is devastated.

TRISTIAN LADLOW played by the lovely Brad Pitt.
Tristan is the second of the three brothers and by far the most adventurous. When he was a child he was attacked by a bear and the only thing that saved him was that he managed to stab the bear in the hand removing one of it’s claws. There is an Indian saying that when a human and bear draw each other’s blood, then they are part of each other forever. Through out the film Tristan if forever battling his inner bear. He witnesses Samuel’s death and after that he just goes mad. He seems to be hell bent on self-destruction.

SUSANNAH FINNCANNON played by Julia Ormond.
She is engaged to marry Samuel but from the very beginning it is obvious that all three brother have feelings for her. When Samuel dies she eventually marries Tristan but he leaves her to travel and find himself. She promises to wait for him but after a long time she thinks that he’s not coming back and re marries.

ISABEL DECKER played by Karina Lambard.
At first Isabel is a child but even as a child she is in love with Tristan and always says that when she grows up she will marry him. When Tristan returns from his quest to find himself he does indeed marry her. She has a calming effect on him and they have two children together.

The film first starts when the three boys are children and gives you a brief history of the family. Then it takes you up to just before the First World War, which is where the film really starts. The film I would say spans about 25 years of the family’s life. The film is full of action as well as romance there is even a few bits, which brought a tear to my eye. This film is defiantly worth watching and I would watch it again.

Edward Zwick directs the film.
It’s a certificate 15.
Running time 133 mins.
DVD extras.
Language choice.
Multiple Language Subtitles.
Scene Selection.

Well done with this review, though I must say I didnt care for this film...however, the producers of this film later made 1998's DANGEROUS BEAUTY, and that is one of my all time favorites....you might like it...Chris xxx

If you like this you should probably try and watch Zwick's previous movie Glory! That will also leave a tear in the eye! Alboy
