Director Ridley Scott's lush fantasy film stars the young Tom Cruise as Jack, a peasant who lives in an enchanted forest with his beloved Lili (Mia Sara). One day, while quietly...
more...gamboling in a glade, the pair is distracted by the appearance of trolls, minions of the evil Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). The cloven-footed, cavern-dwelling monster, long banished to the earth's nether regions, has sent the creatures on a mission to seize the horn of a unicorn, thereby plunging the planet into a frigid darkness over which he alone will reign. Things go from bad to worse as Lili succumbs to the forces of darkness, and Jack must assemble a motley band of elves to free her from bondage and return sunlight to the earth's surface. Sumptous art direction and overwhelming special effects are once again a testament to Scott's powers of visual invention.

Legend starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and, allegedly, Gates Mcfadden of Star Trek TNG fame is a fairy tale of the purest type. Mia stars as a Princess (called Lily if I remember rightly), although we learn nothing more of her Royal life, in love with a simple forest dweller called Jack (Tom Cruise) in an enchanted forest that looks like heaven itself. What Mr Cruise doesn't realise is that in addition to his attentions the delightful Princess is also being pursued...although unknowingly...by the Prince of Darkness himself. This underlying darkness runs throughtout the film although you are sometimes only aware of it in retrospect. Jack takes the Princess to see a pair of Unicorns and all is going swimmingly until she decides to touch one...this apparently being very bad news. Now Jack could have shouted at her not to do it or reached out and grabbed her but no, he decided he'd deal with the consequences, which proves to be a bad move! The P of D captures one of the Unicorns and pursures the second capturing Lily along the way. The rest of the film is Jack, accompanied by various forest folk, attempting to both save Lily and rescue the Unicorn. This is made slightly more precarious by the fact that a pretty dress seems to have wooed Lily over to the devil's side...or has it? What the film lacks in depth it more than makes up for in atmosphere, which is fantastic from beginning to end. The forest is truly enchanted and the devils home is truly evil, in fact everything you would imagine and more. Yes, the final scene is very cheesy but by then you're ready for it and don't even get me started on the sound track....
