I saw this for the first time when I was in my early teens, and I was absolutely smitten. Back then, I had no idea who Tom Cruise was (and neither did the rest of the world, I imagine) and I didn’t judge the film negatively at all. In fact, I was rapt by the scenery, all glittery snow landscapes, serene forests and secret blue pools overgrown with lush plants, where the Unicorns roamed. All this beauty was set off by the hooked nose goblin and his cronies, serving the big red, cloven-hoofed Dark Lord, played magnificently by Tim Curry.
I don’t think that I need to give you a complete blow-by-blow account of the story, as it is your very typical princess causes pandemonium/Pandora’s Box type affair, with loads of weird and wonderful creatures dashing around to save the planet from evil. But I will highlight certain things about this movie which make it worth watching again, even when you’re older, more jaded, and less likely to believe in the escapist qualities of a movie like this.
The main thing that stood out for me was Tim Curry’s character, the Dark Lord. He was a deep glaring red, and looked like a giant devil. I was scared then, and still today, get a feeling of ‘don’t want to run across him in a dark alleyway’. He was the centrepiece of the story for sure. The scenery is magical – everything one would expect from a fairy land. The other characters were an interesting motley crew of Tinkerbell-type fairies, wood-nymphs, a Pan- like character called Puck, the ever-present Unicorns of course, and then the goblins – hairy, stinky and ugly.
If you are looking for intelligent Ridley Scott-esque type hard-hitting drama, you are in the wrong place. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a feel-good fantasy for an evening in, or my ever-popular rainy Saturday afternoon with a bowl of popcorn theory. It is also recommended, very highly, if you have kids, but some parental guidance may be needed. It is however, good clean fun, and is sure to be a hit, even years later.
Advantages: Wonderful fantasy tale, good standard of acting Disadvantages: Despite PG certificate, may scare little ones
This fantasy adventure, written by William Hjortsberg and directed by Ridley Scott, stars a young Tom Cruise as a boy named Jack. Set in a mythical forest which is inhabited by more than just ordinary animals, creatures such as fairies and unicorns, Jack is forced to confront the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry - best known from The Rocky Horror Picture Show), when his beloved princess Lily (Mia Sara) is taken by goblins, and the world is plunged into ... ...small group of forest creatures - gnomes and fairy folk - Jack must rescue Lily and the last remaining unicorn before the Lord of Darkness carries out the sacrifice that will seal the worlds' doom. THE OVERVIEW: This is one of Tom Cruise's earliest films, (film was released in 1985), and is probably one of his best. This film is visually stunning thanks to the directing of Ridley Scott. The mythical forest in which the film is set is outstanding. ...

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, some well integrated moral questions, womderful escapism for those who are jaded by real life or who simply have not forgotten what it was like to be a child. Disadvantages: At first glance it seems that it cannot make a good film, until you allow yourself to experience it first hand.
...looks almost as unbelievable as Legend did before watching. Would we trully risk all to save our less perfect world as Jack had done? Is right and wrong present here as it was in Legend, or is modern life a series of different greys? And can there really be a love which is pure, people who take responsibility for their actions and finally, a happy ever after? It seems rather unlikely. ...

Advantages: Lavish sets, a true fantasy fairytale, Tim Curry as good as ever. Disadvantages: May scare young children.
This film, staring a young Tom Cruise and Mia Sara, is a fantasy fairytale which begins in an enchanted forest. Tom Cruise plays Jack, a peasant boy who has lived in the forest all his life, and has befriended its mythical inhabitants - fairies and unicorns.

An excellent tale of myths and magic, legends and fables. Fairies, Goblins and mythical creatures excellently portrayed in the way that we imagine them to be. A classic childrens tale that is a must see for all those with a fantasy-type mind. This is a childrens film, but if you are an adult and ...

Advantages: Good visually Disadvantages: Dull, casting
Somehow I've avoided this film. I don't know why, I don't know how, but I always seemed to miss it through one accident or another. Should I have tried harder? Should I have stopped playing at the edge of the abandoned mineshaft? The answer is sadly, No
This is a fantasy film pure and simple. Nothing wrong with that but when the fantasy is of the simplest most obvious story possible then we're not looking good. It's simple but here goes anyway: ... ...his love (oo-er) he lets her see...the fabled unicorn (you wondered what I was going to say then didn't you, be honest). She touches one of them (this gets worse) and the forces of eveil use this breaking of the ancient laws to capture and kill one of the pair, bringing darkness to the land. You can guess where this is leading to so I won't continue but suffice to say it doesn't exactly lead you on a twisty turny path with revelation after revelation.

Advantages: A chance to see John Lennon again Disadvantages: We can't have him back
Lennon and McCartney were immense influences on my life and on the lives of millions of fans and musicians. This review is about ?Lennon Legend? ? a DVD of songs and footage of John and Yoko way back when we were all a lot younger and the gods of rock were the real deal.
The fashion icons, John and Yoko start off the DVD seen from behind as they walk through a misty lane, up a drive to the door of a mansion. They walk in silence as the first verse of Imagine starts playing. Then they disappear into thin air and we are inside the house with John playing in a white room, with white furniture, as Yoko goes around the white walls letting light in at the white-shuttered windows. If you?ve not heard this song before ? and this seems barely conceivable ? it holds a wish for peace and a world with no wars, religious hatred, and Nationalistic ...

I am Legend
My husband and I bought this DVD at Sainsbury's last week for £9.79 as I have really wanted to see it ever since it came out in the cinema as I had heard good things about it, e.g. it is scary and intelligent and makes you jump.
Well after watching it I can't decided whether I liked it or not and I'm still not sure about it. The same for my husband and a few people I have talked to about it, they all kind of say, hum, not sure, couldn't work it out.
I am Legend stars Will Smith as a military virologist called Robert Neville. Now, I never like to give away the story or endings in my DVD reviews so I will give you a basic overview of the movie. However, you may want to look away now as I am going to reveal a bit of the story, it's actually about Vampires!! I didn't know this until my husband told me as all the trailers ...
Advantages: Great film, very cheap when I bought it, Will Smith, not too scary Disadvantages: None for me
four, one of which was I Am Legend. I wasn't overly happy about this, as it had never been a film that I had wanted to see, since all the trailers that I had seen last year when it was on at the pictures made it look terrifying, and I'm not a fan of scary movies. I changed my mind, however, when I sat down to watch it with my parents last night, and absolutely loved it.
It is the year 2009, and Dr Alice Krippin (Emma Thompson) has achieved what scientists have been attempting for years: discover a cure for cancer. The cure is made by genetically altering the measles virus so that it does good rather than bad, and in clinical trials has had a 100% success rate. Unfortunately, the viral cure does have one pretty serious side effect: the virus mutates and causes all those infected by it to turn into mutant zombie vampire creatures, or to drop ...

"...Exhilarating visual elements....It is a fairy-tale produced on a grand scale, a classic tale of the struggle between darkness and light, good and evil..." (Variety, 21/08/1985)
DVD Description
Director Ridley Scott's lush fantasy film stars the young Tom Cruise as Jack, a peasant who lives in an enchanted forest with his beloved Lili (Mia Sara). One day, while quietly gamboling in a glade, the pair is distracted by the appearance of trolls, minions of the evil Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). The cloven-footed, cavern-dwelling monster, long banished to the earth's nether regions, has sent the creatures on a mission to seize the horn of a unicorn, thereby plunging the planet into a frigid darkness over which he alone will reign. Things go from bad to worse as Lili succumbs to the forces of darkness, and Jack must assemble a motley band of elves to free her from bondage and return sunlight to the earth's surface. Sumptous art direction and overwhelming special effects are once again a testament to Scott's powers of visual invention.
