Legally Blonde is the 2001 comedy starring Reese Witherspoon & Luke Wilson. It was released in cinemas 26th June 2001 & was generally liked by the critics. They stated that this film was a surprise hit, it wasn?t expected to do too well at the box office as it?s really just a girly comedy with no real substance although despite it being just your typical chick flick Legally Blonde actually managed to gross an estimated $141,774,679 at the box office on a budget of just $18,000,000 I use the term ?just? loosely as I don?t think I?d mind someone putting that amount of money in my bank account to be honest! Legally Blonde is rated 12 & runs for approximately 97 minutes.
Legally Blonde is directed by Robert Luketic who?s other work includes; 21 & Monster In Law starring Jennifer Lopez & Jane Fonda. Robert Luketic is an Australian who first attracted attention in Hollywood with his short film Titsiana Booberini.
As I mentioned previously this film stars Reese Witherspoon who at the time of writing is arguably the biggest actress in Hollywood, she also has a salary to match (an estimated $20,000,000 a movie!). Reese Witherspoon got her big break in the film Election, a teen comedy from 1999. Election earned her her first Golden Globe nomination. I?m a big fan
of Reese Witherspoon & she?s appeared in numerous films which I?ve thoroughly enjoyed including; Fear (1996), Cruel Intentions (1999), Just Like Heaven (2005) & Legally Blonde 2 (2003), this is the sequel to Legally Blonde just incase anyone was scratching their heads in confusion! Her most recent film to be released at the box office was the seasonal film Four Christmases where she stars with Vince Vaughn, the film wasn?t the huge success that people thought it would be & was somewhat of a flop at the box office.
Reese Witherspoon?s co-star in Legally Blonde is played by Luke Wilson. Luke is the younger brother to Owen Wilson, the two are very successful however I feel that Luke Wilson is somewhat overshadowed by his older brother?s success. Luke Wilson?s starred in many successful films including; Charlie?s Angels (2000), My Super Ex Girlfriend (2006) & Vacancy.
I guess by now you?re probably thinking ?so what about the actual film?? am I right?! Well the film revolves around Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), the ditsy, spoilt blonde with the big heart. She?s in love with her gorgeous boyfriend Warner Huntington II. As it?s near graduation Elle is expecting Warner to propose to her & when Warner comes round to pick her up for a date she?s extremely excited with her friends as she thinks that this will be her moment. The two go out for dinner & as the night goes on Elle only gets more & more anxious as she waits for her perfect boyfriend to pop the question, however instead of proposing to Elle Warner tells her it?s over as he is going off to law school & he tells her in not so many words that she isn?t up to his standards leaving Elle devastated.
Elle believes that Warner still loves her & that it was his family who convinced him that she wasn?t good enough. Believing this so strongly she comes up with an ingenious & fool proof plan? she goes to Harvard law school to win him back. Only thing is, Elle doesn?t know a thing about law & above that she has no interest in it, she?s interested in fashion & anything pink! Elle, however is determined to get into law school, show Warner that she?s not the dumb blonde he thinks she is & ultimately win him back. Simple!
I personally love this film, I know a lot of people who aren?t too keen on it simply for being a typical girly rom-com however I don?t think this is your typical girly rom-com. This is different. It?s not focused around romance for one, it?s about a girl who is determined to do something that people would never expect her to be able to do & succeeding with style, grace & her dignity intact.
Despite this films fluffy, pink image it actually has a strong & uplifting message. You can do anything you put your mind to. This film portrays this brilliantly, yes it?s a little far-fetched as not everybody would get into Harvard law school after a couple of weeks of studying but if you overlook the obvious then you?ll realise the message included in this.
I find this film extremely funny from start to finish, Reese Witherspoon is definitely in her element playing Elle & I can understand why this was booked for a sequel. Jennifer Coolidge is brilliant at playing beauty parlour worker Paulette. She?s been treated badly in the past by men & has a huge crush on the mail man but can?t pluck up the courage to talk to him, upon meeting Elle when she pops in for a manicure the two women become friends & Elle really helps build her confidence up enough to ask out her crush. Elle also teaches her her trademark ?bend & snap? movement in the salon which is one of my favourite parts in the whole movie & you should really look out for it.
I think that anyone can enjoy this film, it?s not your generic chick flick with ditsy girls that only care about getting the guy, yes the reason Elle wants to go to law school is to win her boyfriend back but along the way she becomes very passionate about law & ultimately finds a career path.
This film is ultimately about determination & the fact that if you really want something you can achieve it, Legally Blonde also deals with a tough issue & shows that you can get to where you want to be while maintaining your dignity & self respect. I would recommend this film to anyone as I?m confident you?ll enjoy it.
The DVD that I own holds many extra features including; Audio Commentary Deleted Scenes Featurette Music video Trivia Track Original Theatrical Trailer
Legally Blonde is currently available from play.com for only £3.99 I would happily pay triple that for this film so for £3.99 this is a real bargain & I highly recommend it.
The soundtrack is also available from play.com however for the more expensive price of £9.80. The soundtrack includes; Perfect Day (Hoku) Love Is A Beautiful Thing (Krystal Harris) We Could Still Belong Together (Lisa Loeb) Don't Need You To (Samantha Mumba) One Girl Revolution (Superchic[k]) A Thousand Miles (Vanessa Carlton) Magic (Black Eyed Peas Featuring Terry Dexter) Watch Me Shine (Joanna Pacitti) Ooh La La (Valeria) Can't Get Me Down (Lo-ball) Sex Machine (Mya)

I'm sorry for the H, but for this to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in the same detail as your review of the film, not just a list of them.
