- - Cast. - - Elle Woods - Reese Witherspoon. Emmett Richmond - Luke Wilson. Warner Huntington III - Matthew Davis. Vivian Kensington - Selma Blair. Brooke Wyndham - Ali Larter. Paulette Bonafonte - Jennifer Coolidge. Professor Callahan - Victor Garber.
Legally Blonde follows the story of Elle Woods, a blonde fashion major from Bel Air, who is totally in love with her boyfriend Warner. When Warner dumps Elle because he needs to be with someone more serious before heading off to Harvard Law School, Elle is devastated, but decides to prove to him how serious she can be by enrolling in Harvard too, in order to win him back. When she gets there, Elle and her little Chihuahua, Bruiser, find that Warner has already gotten engaged to another girl - Vivian - who is the complete opposite of Elle, and deliberately makes life hard for her. So, with the help of her manicurist Paulette, Elle sets out to get the 6ct diamond off Vivian's bony, unpolished finger! At first Elle hates law school, and her professors and fellow students hate her, but when she gets picked as an intern on one of Professor Callahan's cases
- defending well-known fitness instructor Brooke Wyndham, she gets to know Emmett - a partner in Callahan's law firm. From then on, matters start to improve for Elle, she and Vivian even become friends, but Callahan has other plans, and when he tries to hit on her, she walks out of Law School. Between Brooke and Emmett, they get Elle to come back and defend the case herself. When Elle wins Brooke's case based on her knowledge of perm matinence, Warner decides she's a serious enough girl for him and wants her back, but Elle has already realised he's not the guy for her and that there are more important things in life.
First of all, I have to say this is one of my favourite films of all time. I always know when I've enjoyed a film, if as soon as the credits have rolled I want to watch it again. I first saw Legally Blonde on the Sky Movies channel and immediately wished I'd taped it because I would quite happily have sat there and watched it through again straight away. As it was, I rushed out the following day and bought the VHS in Woolworths for £2.99 - bargain!
Since then I've probably watched this movie about 30 times, and I never get tired of it. This is one thing that never fails to cheer me up, because it's a real upbeat happy film about the underdog triumphing in the end. There's a very strong underlying message about knowing what you want and not being afraid to go out and get it. It's also about standing up for yourself and believing in yourself and others, and blonde-power, of course!
Oh, and Luke Wilson's in it.
The main star of the show, for me, is Elle's chihuahua Bruiser, who is with Elle no matter where she goes. (Am I the only one who realises this, but surely dogs wouldn't be allowed in classrooms or courtrooms?) I love Bruiser and his little outfits which perfectly match Elle's.
Did I mention Luke Wilson's in it?
I think the acting is brilliant, all the cast get their characters spot on, and there's some good 'background' characters like David Kidney and Enid Wexler. Jennifer Coolidge playing Paulette puts in a fantastic performance, and is instantly likeable, especially when she talks about her precious baby Rufus! The storyline is a good one, and quite different from other films in the genre. Admittedly, the film is predictable - it's not hard to guess that romance is going to blossom between Emmett and Elle from the beginning, or that Elle and Vivian will become friends, and that Elle will win her case, but I don't think that spoils the film in any way. There are also some funny moments, like Paulette's whole relationship with the UPS Guy, some good quotes, and some memorable scenes, such as the "Bend & Snap"! It's also nice to see that Elle doesnt change when people want her too, she sticks to her guns, and doesnt see anything wrong with being her pink, girlie self even when the people at law school are horrified by her outfits!
Another thing I enjoy is the soundtrack, which like the film is upbeat, happy and girlie. It starts off with a cracking track - Perfect Day by Hoku, which can't fail to put you in a good mood, and is followed by some equally chirpy songs like Watch Me Shine by Joanna Pacitti, A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton and We Could Still Belong Together by Lisa Loeb.
One thing I will say is that this film reminded me alot of Clueless. Reese Witherspoon's character is quite similar to Alicia Silverstone's, even down to her facial expressions and tone of voice - (Watch the scene where Elle goes to her Guidance Counsellor and says about not needing back up's because she's going to Harvard, and tell me that's not very similar to Cher in Clueless.) Clueless is also one of my favourite movies, and I think seeing the likeness between the two movies is what attached me to Legally Blonde in the first place.
The one thing this movie will make you want to do is reach for the hair bleach!
