Legally Blonde is one of those films that makes you feel uplifted, you can conquer everything… even if you are blonde! This film goes against the general genre of the “dumb blonde” in the majority of films by having a central character that is not only stylish and cool, but also intelligent enough to conquer Harvard law school!
Released in 2001 it soon became a box office hit and was followed in 2003 by Legally Blonde 2.
Rating – 12 Running time – 96 minutes
** Starring **
Reese Witherspoon – previously seen alongside hubbie Ryan Philippe in Cruel Intentions and also having starred in Sweet Home Alabama and American Psycho, she fits perfectly into the role of angelic, unsuspecting and innocent Elle Woods. She’s your classically cute girl next door, always being seen in a naïve light and plays this character to pure perfection!
Selma Blair – previously seen in connection with Reese in Cruel Intentions and more recently in The Sweetest Thing and Down to You. She does come across in the majority of her films as the girl we love to hate, which is what she appears as in this film – Elle’s ex’s new love but in the end she realises
her faults and becomes a comrade of Elle.
Luke Wilson – previously seen in Charlie’s Angels and Old School he’s yet another face in this film with quite a filming history. Strangely enough he plays the role of the hunk, Elle’s later love interest which is quite unlikely as I feel he’s rather too “geeky” at times to carry this off successfully.
Ali Larter – previously seen in Final Destination and Drive Me Crazy, a little less well known than previous actors. She plays the role of wrongly accused murderer who Elle must fight to free, and does so through the important knowledge of perms!
Matthew Davis – Warner Huntington III Victor Garber – Professor Callahan Jennifer Coolidge – Paulette Bonafonte Holland Taylor – Professor Stromwell Jessica Cauffiel - Margot
** The Plot **
Much of this film focuses on the “out of your depth” setting, with Elle (Reece Witherspoon) being the centre of attention and the kind of girl we all yearn to be. She’s president of her sorority at university, and for those unaccustomed to such things that’s quite a privilege so I’m led to believe! Unfortunately her only flaw occurs quite early on where she’s dumped by her boyfriend for a more intelligent model – one that would suit his career as a lawyer. As a result she decides to show him just what she’s capable of and sets out on a journey to become a law student. She rallies all her troops and sets about making her fabulous admission video which surprisingly gains her a place in Harvard Law School. What follows isn’t the shopping malls and fashion shows Elle thought, but some hard graft where she works hard (proving blondes do have brains) and succeeds in graduating as a top lawyer and earning herself a trainee place in a top law firm as well. In between all this are some fabulous comical moments – look out for the drop and bend movement! At last she manages to win a placement at a top law firm and wins the case for the firm, by using not her amazing intellect, but her knowledge of perms to prove the defendant innocent!
** DVD Features **
Including the actual film there's also a documentary on the film's obsession with hairstyles, a bubbly commentary from Witherspoon and director Robert Luketic as well as a trivia test for fans out there!
** My Opinion **
Witherspoon is fabulous, she’ll get you laughing while rooting for her indefinitely! She’s the classic girl we’d love to hate who has absolutely everything you could wish for, but she’s so cute and naïve about life that she just has you empathizing with her throughout. However at times she did irritate me a little - I often found it hard to understand how she could be portrayed as so clever (enough to get a 1st Harvard Law Degree) and yet at the same time remain so lacking in common sense and so "blonde" to at times!
It’s a little predictable – I mean there wouldn’t really be a story if she were to fail at being a lawyer so the outcome is guessable from the start. It’s certainly not the type of film that’ll keep you guessing or in any suspense as it’s totally conventional. What it does bring is some fantastic comedy moments but I must admit I wasn’t laughing throughout, certain parts got a little bit plain and boring for me.
Ideal for a girl’s night in or just a film to watch alone - not one however if you're looking for something deeply entertaining or at all challenging I'm afraid as it's just too simple for that. A happy, romantic comedy with plenty of laughs yet many underlying morals too! A fabulous cast and a fabulous story!
