Ok chick flick, teen movie lover here. If you have read any of my other movie ops I always mention the fact that I LOVE teen movies. Anyway my friend saw this movie and said when I saw this, I thought of you. To be honest I guessed what she was thinking of as the film looked really girly and pink (just like me) so I knew I would love it. After I found out it was number one in the states I knew it was going to be good! It was a surprise hit just like my other favourite movie Bring it on.
Anyway I have to say I expected loads of fun and I definitely was not disappointed this film was just brilliant. I left the movie theatre feeling bubbly and happy for some reason and I just had the urge to go out and buy a pink dress and I did! Lol! This film is definitely one for the girls, I don’t think the guys would appreciate it plus it makes girly blondes look really cool (even though I already know that, haha)!
THE PLOT~~ Elle woods has got everything. She was home coming queen of her high school. She’s the president of a famous sorority. She’s got true friends who really care for her. She’s got wonderful girly looks and has a lovely boyfriend. Oh and a lovely little dog called Bruiser. The perfect life some might say (or I might say).
Anyway Elle knows her long term Boyfriend Warner is going to propose to her at a lovely posh restaurant she gets all dolled up ready for the most important evening in her life. Warner says to Elle he needs to think about his future, Elle agrees to talk about it thinking he is going to pop the question but instead he announces that there is no way he can marry a blonde bimbo. He says he cannot date her because she isn’t serious enough for him as he is going to leave her to study law at Harvard University. Elle is heartbroken and refuses to leave her room for a whole week. Her best friends Margot and Serena decide to cheer her up with the best way they know. A manicure and a pedicure. At the parlour Elle sees an article about Warner’s brother who married a law student. Elle decides that is what she has to become to impress Warner and get him back.
Elle is studying Fashion merchandising so she hasn’t really got the qualifications but she decides to study her butt her off to pass her L. S.A.T.S and has to get at least 145 marks. She manages to pass and sends in her promotional video into Harvard, and I must say its pretty funny as she is swimming in a pool in a bikini explaining why she would be the perfect Harvard law student. The people that are deciding whether or not to let Elle attend Harvard all happen to be men and they are stunned by her ‘lovely’ video. There ya go she’s got a place in Harvard!! Woohoo! To begin with Elle is a joke around the Harvard campus. Whilst there are loads of other ‘plain and average’ students Elle stands out from the crowd with her bright pink outfits and lovely, sleek, blonde hair. She is definitely not taken seriously and in her first law class she
is humiliated by one-student named Vivian who seems like those bitchy rich girls wearing old granny style sweaters.
Anyway Elle spots Warner and decides to ‘bump into him’. He is shocked to see her there and asks what she’s doing there. She explains she is also a law student and he is stunned. Elle agrees to meet him later to explain the situation. When she does she has the ‘pleasure’ of meeting his new fiancée. Yes you guessed it its bitchy Vivian. Elle is so unhappy with the situation that she decides to actually work her butt off and earn her place in Harvard. She shocks everyone with her smart comments but still isn’t taken very seriously, until her professor picks some first year students to help him with a murder case and Elle is chosen, along with Warner and Vivian! The case is a murder case. It involves fitness instructor Brook Taylor Windham. An instructor Elle loves and looks up to. Brook is charged with murdering her much older husband but claims she is innocent and Elle believes her. Brook could get her name cleared but she refuses to name her alibi, she confides in Elle and Elle promises not to tell a soul. She was at the time of her husbands murder having liposuction, which would probably tarnish her reputation as a fitness instructor. Even though Elle is pressurised into telling her professor the alibi she refuses as she promised Brook.
Elle has to help solve the case and try to get Warner back but will it all work out for her? THE CAST~~
Reese Witherspoon – Elle Woods Luke Wilson – Emmett Matthew Davis – Warner Selma Blair – Vivian Jennifer Coolidge – Paulette Victor Garber - Professor Callahan Ali Larter – Brooke Taylor Windham Holland Taylor – Professor Stromwell Jessica Cauffiel – Margot Alanna Ubach - Serena Oz Perkins – David Linda Cardellini – Chutney Windham Meredith Scott Lynn - Enid THE CHARACTERS~~
Elle Woods – This character is just brilliant. If I was a movie character I would be Elle Woods for definite. She is just so girly. She is quite dizzy and is the normal blonde, all American girl. She is not taken seriously at all but is respected by her sorority sisters probably for knowing all the latest fashion trends. She is funny, sweet and definitely knows what she wants. I guess she works hard to get what she wants also, as its not easy being a Harvard law student (or so I’ve heard). She is also obsessed with her little cutie dog Bruiser which is one very trendy dog, as I’m sure it was wearing a pink sweater! LOL. Emmett – Emmett is a lovely guy who helps Elle out when she’s mega confused. He is Elle’s professor’s assistant. He has a lot of faith in Elle and believes she can go very far. In the movie he is very supportive of Elle when other people just don’t think she can go very far.
Warner – Warner is the guy who dumped Elle because she is blonde and he thinks his family wont accept her. He is harsh on her and quite as a**hole. He wants, and thinks he is of very high status and should marry a Jackie not a Marilyn. His character seems very big headed and as if his life is perfect and he has the choice of any girl he wants. Vivian – She is the average Harvard student. The rich b*tch who wants to become a lawyer, I guess in Warner’s eyes she’s a Jackie. She seems like a proper suck up to the teachers and really refuses to give Elle a chance, and just wants to mess her life up. She got engaged to Warner and got very angry when Warner talked to Elle.
Paulette – Now she is just such a sweet character. I guess you could say Elle in 30 years time if she doesn’t become successful in life. Paulette works at the local beauty salon and becomes Elle’s friend and shrink. She is really shy and finds it difficult to talk to men after her husband threw her out. She fancies the delivery guy but doesn’t know how to start a conversation with him, this can be very funny! Professor Callahan – This is Elle’s professor who thinks she was a bimbo to begin with but as his she continues to study in his class he realises she really does have good ideas which would probably make her win a case. He is a lawyer and a professor and chooses Elle along with some others to help him out with a murder case.
Brooke Taylor Windham – This woman is a fitness instructor who was charged with murdering her much older husband. Her husband was rich but being a fitness instructor so is she so they having difficulty finding out a motive for her so called murdering. Elle idolises her so she knows she’s innocent, and both coming from the same sorority, Brooke begins to trust Elle. Margot & Serena – These two are Elle’s best buddies. They know exactly how to cheer Elle up and are also her sorority sisters. They are both quite ditzy and there life seems to be better than it actually is if they have manicures and pedicures. They are really dizzy and quite funny although they don’t really come in the film that much.
THE PERFORMANCES~~ Reese Witherspoon was brilliant as Elle woods. She was so funny and was definitely the perfect girl for the part. She was funny, smart, pretty, girlie all at the same time and it worked really well. She can act serious when she wants to but this performance proves she can do several different characters. I thought she was just brilliant! Luke Wilson was really sweet as Emmett, he was really sincere and his character was just really nice. I think they chose the right guy to play the part, because he played the part really well. Matthew Davies played the part of Warner really well, I think he was sincere, sweet and nice at the right time and an a**hole at other times and I definitely think he did really well at playing the part. Selma Blair was great as bitchy rich girl Vivian. I think her look was perfect for the part, she’s pretty but average at the same time, which makes Elle stand out. I think she was really good as the bitchy girl and also good when she had to be sincere. I really do think they picked the right person because she really does suit the role. Jennifer Coolidge was excellent as the lost and confused Blondie chick Paulette. She’s the confident woman in American pie so this character was a real change, she was completely different. She played the part brilliantly and I think she as perfect for it. She was sweet and funny at the same time. Ali Larter was good as Brooke although she didn’t do much in the movie, I think she didn’t suit the role but I think she did really well.
ADVANTAGES~~ One of the advantages for this film is that it is just loads of fun. It is a really funny film and worth watching. It will definitely make you giggle. The movie also had a really good cast and Reese Witherspoon was perfect as Elle. I think the soundtrack for the movie is also really good, it suited the movie and I think they really suited the scenes too.
DISADVANTAGES~~ I guess the disadvantages for this film are that its predictable, girlie, and I doubt guys would enjoy it, but I still really enjoyed it and found the jokes hilarious!
THE SOUNDTRACK~~ This soundtrack is really girlie and is full of frothy pop tracks, which really could make you smile. The songs are in the movie and really suit the songs. I love some of the songs, as they are really fun and upbeat. The soundtrack includes songs from Hoku, whom I have never heard of before but her song perfect day is a really catchy upbeat song. The song was played at the credits in the beginning of the movie. It’s really different and has a really fun, funky vibe about it. Lisa Loeb is also on the soundtrack with her song we could still belong together which has quite a pop, alternative vibe about it. It’s quite a good song, which has a fun, bright vibe about it. Samantha Mumba is also on the soundtrack with a song called Don’t need you to (tell me I’m pretty) which is quite slower than the other tracks. It as a really soft vibe about it and is quite a chill out song. I guess this song would probably be aimed at Warner! It’s got really good lyrics as well and I think Samantha’s voice sounds really good on this song. Also on the soundtrack is Mya who covers James Browns classic sex machine. It’s fast, upbeat and very cool. It’s a good version of the song and you can still hear James Brown’s singing in the background! I think Mya sounds excellent on this track. Very upbeat and definitely suits the movie. Overall a very good album that is full of girly, frothy pop songs!
OVERALL~~ I really enjoyed this film. I haven’t seen a film like this since clueless, which was the film that got me into furry pens and bright pink outfits. This film is just pure fun. I came out of the theatre feeling so bubbly! If left me cheered up and feeling very energized, as soon as I walked out I ran to the nearest clothes shop and bought myself a pink top as I was so in the mood for one!
The story is not difficult to understand and is not really to be taken seriously but that’s what’s so fun about it. I think girly girls would adore this movie, even if you’re not girlie it is a lot of fun and I’m sure you’d enjoy it. I don’t think the guys would enjoy it as it really is a chick flick but I’m sure they’d enjoy Elle’s, Harvard audition tape! I think girls would definitely enjoy it more, if you enjoyed clueless and she’s all that then I bet you’ll love this. It’s just brilliant, refreshing fun on film! I think this film would be perfect if you take a girlie mate with you!

Thisis a real feel-good film, loved it and the sequel, although it is rather cheesy and predictable at times, but hey let's face it I'm a typical girl!
