My choice to see Legally Blonde was based on the fact that I’d seen pretty much everything else on release, the film has received pretty good reviews across the board and it of course star’s Reese Witherspoon, an actress who excels at this kind of thing and someone I’ve been a fan of in films such as Election and Pleasantville.
Witherspoon plays Elle Woods, a ditzy blonde who’s heavily into beauty and fashion. She sees her future as being married to her handsome yet somewhat arrogant boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) who is from a family with a good reputation. Sadly on the night she thinks he’ll propose he instead dumps her, as he needs to concentrate on his future at Harvard law school. After briefly wallowing in self-pity Elle decides to enrol herself at Harvard and get Warner back. But after a while she discovers she has some legal savvy and soon gets into Law School, encountering a murder trial and helping a beautician in her love life along the way. Or course all the while she has to look good and wear great clothes.
This is a film that isn’t really anything new, comparisons have been drawn to Clueless and they do have some things in common but Legally Blonde also has a lot of great things going for it. The material wouldn’t be half as good if it weren’t for the casting. Reese Witherspoon is excellent; she’s instantly likeable, looks great and has a perkiness that lifts your sprits throughout. Davis is also great as the handsome but secretly dim-witted (ex) boyfriend. In supporting roles there are the likes of Luke Wilson and Selma Blair who are always decent and it’s great to see Jennifer Coolidge who seems to be in every comedy film at the moment. Her character could easily have been someone who wasn’t integral to the plot but she’s just as likeable as Elle.
The script is constantly amusing and at moments does elevate itself with some great lines that get good laughs such as :-
Elle Woods: And last week I saw Cameron Diaz at Fred Segal, and I talked her out of buying this truly heinous angora sweater. Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.
There’s also some excellent retorts such as one between Elle and Selma Blair’s character this is pretty wicked. Of course once again the cast and the direction elevate the script. There’s not much new about it and some of the situations are a bit hokey but it’s all in the spirit of the film.
Directing the film is Aussie newcomer Robert Luketic and he knows how to get the best from the material. Like I’ve said this isn’t original but every possible comedy beat is played upon and there is just a fluffy sweet nature about the whole film that you can’t help but like. Throw into that an impromptu dance number and of course a cute little dog and you can’t go wrong.
I think that this is a film where all the elements came together perfectly. It’s no surprise that it’s been a huge hit in America because I have no doubt that people appreciated a comedy that didn’t resort to gross out humour and kept it’s story short and simple. Don’t be out off by the fact that it looks like a film just for girls because I had a good time with it and left with a smile on my face. Some film’s are made just to do that and this is one of them.
Either way it’s a whole lot better than a certain comedy sequel doing the rounds at the moment.

Advantages: It's an excellent flick for chicks and it has the gorgeus Luke Wilson in it Disadvantages: It's very pink and doesn't have enough Luke Wilson in it

Review of Legally Blonde (DVD)
Advantages: A good demonstration of how social status can be completely misaligned Disadvantages: I'm a man. Therefore, 90% of the humour here is completely beyond me
