Legally Blonde 2 is the second film that has been based on the novel Legally Blonde written by Amanda Brown. The first movie was realised three years ago and starred Reese Witherspoon and followed the trials and tribulations of Elle Woods as she followed her boyfriend to law school in order to try and win him back and prove that blondes can be anything but dumb and do more than dye their hair...
The first movie was incredibly successful and was a fun, daft film that did offer quite a good message. How will Legally Blonde 2 live up to the success of the first film? Read on the find out...
Legally Blonde 2:
The Plot:
The film starts pretty slowly to be honest with Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon) heading towards Capitol Hill in Washington DC to change the legal system!
Following on from the first film Elle is now engaged to Emmeett and as well as setting off on her legal career is also beginning to take the first steps towards the rest of her life as she begins to plan her marriage to Emmett.
Elle
has a job working for a US Senator (played by Sally Field who you may remember form famous films such as Steel Magnolias etc.). As is usual Elle's unusual sense of fashion and unique outlook on life do not go down too well with the intellectual and serious senator staff. As Elle settles into life in Washington things go from bad to worse although as in the first film she finds solace in her doorman and local dog walker (as you do...)
Elle then decides to take on the American cosmetics industry as she discovers that a cosmetics firm is testing on animals and on her pet Chihuahua Bruiser's mom! To make matter worse she must battle against the senator or else all her hard work will be in vain and Bruiser's mom will die...
(Re-reading the above, it does make me wonder how anyone came up with such a ridiculous sounding plot!)
DVD:
I picked the DVD up in Tesco for about £11 and it contains a number of features that make it stand out above the normal VHS video:
Outtakes and deleted scenes (the actors made some hilarious mistakes when they were filming this movie!)
There's also a photo gallery showing the stars behind the scenes and what they get up to off stage as well as an interactive voice over with some of the films stars (not the main ones though...) who tell you behind the scenes secrets as you watch the film
About the film:
Running time: 1hour 31 minutes
Made by: MGM (Metro Goldwyn Meyer)
Starring: Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods
Luke Wilson as Emmeett
Sally Fields
Executive Producer: Reese Witherspoon (AKA Elle Woods)
Directed by: Charles Herman-Wurmfeld
Rating: Parental Guidance (There is no swearing, violence or bad language in this film so it will be good for children over about 8 or 9 to watch so that they can follow the plot and understand the themes)
Is it worth watching?
To be honest, I got dragged to see Legally Blonde at the cinema as I did not think that it was my sort of film. When I had seen it I had thoroughly enjoyed it as the film was funny, witty, well written and well acted. Although I didn't catch Legally Blonde 2 at the cinema I did think that it would probably be a good DVD buy for watching on those lazy winter Sunday afternoons...
Although Legally Blonde 2 had some very good write ups and really does offer an all star cast I found it to be very contrived and rather slow after the first film. The acting is very good and Witherspoon and the other actors all turn in very credible performances (although Sally Field doesn't cut it for me as a hard nosed Senator: she seems too nice in her other films!)
The plot seems to move along very slowly at times and to be honest I don't think that this film is actually that funny as it is very inevitable where the film is heading and it seems to take along time to get there.
If you enjoyed the first film then you will probably sit through this no problems and it's worth watching if you like any of the cast from other things that they have been in. Personally, I would borrow it from the video store or off a friend!
Kids will probably still think that it is very funny and there are some very classic 'Elle; lines in there... they are just quite hidden!
I loved the first one but thought this was fairly lame in comparison. It just didn't have the same edge and I felt quite a lot of the jokes were repeated from the first one, thanks for the comment on my op! Sarah x
I thought LB1 was very funny. I haven't seen this one and, from what you say, it might be a disappointment, as so many sequels are. Thanks for a clear assessment. Duncan
