* Updated with extra DVD features!
On one of my first dates ever with my current boyfriend we decided to do the typical second of third date thing and go to the cinema, I suggested Legally Blonde 2 at which he cringed (and then tried to hide it obviously) and proceded to tell his friend when he rang up that we were seeing some hard macho film - are men really that embarrassed by this film! I'd seen the prequel to this on DVD a while back and I've often though sequels don't quite live up to the prequel but decided to give it a go anyway! So armed with the compulsory pop corn and drink we proceeded into the cinema to negotiate where abouts we should actually sit - back row is too keen and well the front is just undesirable by all!
As a large fan of all shades pink I have to take my hat off (if I was wearing one of course) to the fashion team on Legally Blonde 2... where did they find so many fabulous - if at times somewhat hysterical - pink outfits! And really that's the centre piece to this film, the idea of pink, blondeness and bimbos - but it's not your typical blonde bimbo film, oh no - this is one with a difference! Against traditional ideas of the beautiful blonde playing a somewhat lacking intelligence character in films (have you ever noticed the majority of so called "clever" females in films are rarely blonde?) in this innovative film Reece WItherspoon plays the role of Elle - your typical blonde, fashionable girl - but instead of portraying her as "thick" and bimbo like she's actually one of the most clever people around, clever enough to obtain a Harvard Law Degree.
For all of those uninitiated to the world of Legally Blonde here's a quick insight into the first film to get you up to speed...
Released in 2001 it fast became a box office hit, featuring the ever lovely and angelic Reece Witherspoon as your typical American blonde bimbo making her way through college with the usual array of fashion
dilemmas and parties to attend. Upon being dumped by the love of her life (she was one of these girls who had the wedding all planned out!) for not being suitable to his upcoming Law degree and instant richness she decides to fight back for blondes everywhere and prove she is smart enough by getting into Harvard Law School in an attempt to win him back! She cleverly constructs an admissions video - as you can imagine featuring things that aren't really common to such videos - studies very hard and surprising even herself, gets in! What follows is both an hilarious look at her attaining a law degree (which she does) as well as a snub at intellectuals worldwide who consider themselves better than others! In the final year of her degree she is chosen for a placement at a top law firm along with several other students (including her ex-boyfriend) and manages to win the case they are set by determining the length left between having a perm and washing your hair - maybe beauty knowledge is universally useful!
And so undoubtably followed Legally Blonde 2 in the light of the 1st's success. The opening sees successful lawyer Elle concentrating all her efforts on planning her wedding to Emmett (a law lecturer from Legally Blonde 1) and decides it would be rude not to invite her best friend's mum (which I'm sure you'll agree is true) until you learn her best friend is actually her dog Bruiser. Upon attempting to post the letter to Bruiser's mum she discovers that she's actually being used for animal testing for Versace - Veterinary Examination Research Science & Critter Examination - not the clothes chain that Elle was so fond of! She proposes a campaign to pass a law against animal testing - unfortunatly her present employers do not see this as worthwhile and so fire her, leaving Elle jobless. Never phased by this she embarks on a journey to Washington (she paints it pink as she goes!) to pass a bill prohibiting animal testing all on her own! Victoria Rudd's firm employs Elle for this purpose - she meets extreme criticism in the form of other employees - and she sets about gaining support for her bill to be passed! The outcome of the story was quite evident from the beginning yet I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say she befriends memebers of the bill panal is quite obscure ways!
The Cast... Elle Woods - Reece Witherspoon just effortlessly fills the roll of any unsuspecting and angelic blonde, previous roles have highlighted her ease with the classic good girl role (Cruel Intentions, Sweet Home Alabama). It does lead me to wonder how she'd cope playing a different kind of character but for the purpose of this film she's burting with naive appeal and charm!
Emmett - Luke Wilson, somewhat unknown in the world of Hollywood previous to these 2 films. In my opinion he's not your classic heart throb but he does suit the role very well and almost calms the impact of Elle while balancing the film out a little (Charlie's Angels 2, Old School).
Paulette - Jennifer Coolidge plays an equally dumb blonde and a comrade of Elle's in both films, she's your typical bimbo however and so different to her appearance in American Pie - she does add wit and laughter to the film!(American Pie The Wedding, Zoolander).
Grace - Regina King plays a lawyer in the same law firm in which Elle is employed to pass her bill and handles the part of "Super B*TCH" brilliantly, she's calm and cool throughout, someone you'll love to hate! (Daddy Day Care, Down to Earth).
Victoria Rudd - Sally Field plays Elle's new boss in D.C. a goody goody who turns against Elle in the end - but Elle gets her revenge! (Say It Isn't So, Mrs Doubtfire).
Standford Marks - Bruce McGill plays a member of the bill panal Elle befriends by their mutual dog ownership!
Libby Hauser - Dana Ivey plays another member of the bill panal Elle befriends by learning she is from the same soriety at college!
My Opinion... oh so important... I think both Legally Blonde films are definatly worth a look and if you liked the first one chances are you'll enjoy this one too! I feel that as usual however the sequel didn't quite like up to the prequel which was a shame as Legally Blonde was such a fantastic and entertaining film! At times some of Elle's pure blonde comments will leave you slightly irritated as will the similar lines from the previous film - they could have thought up new jokes! I often found it hard to understand how she could be portrayed as so clever (enough to get a 1st Harvard Law Degree) and yet at the same time remain so lacking in common sense and so "blonde" to at times! The film is definatly a comedy, and a light hearted one at that! Ideal for a girls night in or just a film to watch alone - not one however if you're looking for something deeply entertaining or at all challenging I'm afraid as it's just too simple for that. I purely watched it for the fabulous outfits and style Reece Witherspoon can carry off so effortlessly! I must say I did enjoy the snub that the film's undercurrents portray of mocking the world of law and the passing of a bill... by befriending other dog owner's in Elle's case! A fantastic satircal underpinning to what is a pretty good film!
Rating PG (oppose to the first film which was rated 12, I think this reflects the down grade in quality of the film too, it's more suitable for children and less entertaining to adults).
DVD Extras As DVD extras go (and I'm a novice to this as I normally skip them and just watch the film) I feel you get quite a good selection on this DVD. Deleted scenes - not quite sure why you'd want to see these as they obviously aren't relevant to the film otherwise they'd still be there! Outtakes - these are the best I think and well worth a look, feature the casts mess ups during the filming, some funny moments! Music Video - Leann Rime's "We Can" music video, always enjoy watching music videos and it's an upbeat, feel good song too! Delta Nu Quiz - a quiz to see if you'd be any good in the Delta Nu soriety, not sure what this is for but quite entertaining and very Elle-like! Audio Features - with several members of the cast, not that good really! Photo Gallery - featuring some of the behind the scenes photo of the cast and film set and the filming!
Best Quotes!
Emmett - You fell asleep during West Wing. Elle - Yeah but have you seen what they're wearing?
Elle - Hello patriots! Timothy - Oh my god it's capital Barbie!
Elle - I taught Bruiser to shop online... I think I can handle congress!
Tagline - This summer - justice is blonde.
