Lee Evans is a comedy genius in my eyes. I remember vaguely hearing the name ‘Lee Evans’ , although I was never sure who he was or what he looked like. However , my sister had bought a copy of the DVD of his ‘XL’ tour , and that is when I was introduced to the man that is Lee Evans , and have since become quite a big fan of his.
* So Who IS Lee Evans ? * Lee Evans is a British stand-up comedian , born in Bristol on February 25th 1964. He is currently forty five years of age. His father was a nightclub entertainer , and so after a stint as a boxer , Lee decided to follow in his father’s footsteps in the entertainment business. As a youngster , Lee was talented in many areas , boxing , art and music. He moved to Rhyl , North Wales where he played drums in a band. It was in the 1990’s that Lee rose to fame ; using the same techniques and trademarks he is still known for now , such as his sweating (not just sweating , but sweating bucket loads) and also his constant apologising. These are the trademarks that have made him stand out from the rest , making his performances unique and memorable. Evans currently lives in Essex with his wife and teenage daughter.
Big is the most recent Lee Evans tour. He had had a bit of a ‘break’ from
the ‘stand-up’ scene (three years to be precise) since his last tour which was famously known as the ‘XL tour. Big , saw Lee perform in front of over 500,000 people , playing at fifty nine different locations all over the United Kingdom. Many of his shows were sold out , which proves how successful he is.
Before purchasing my copy of this DVD , I didn’t hesitate about whether or not I was going to buy this. Having watched his last DVD several times , and watched his regular performances on the Sky channel , Paramount Comedy there was no question about whether I would enjoy it or not , I just knew that I would love it , and so I bought a copy. I had originally wanted to go and see one his shows live , however the tickets were too expensive for my liking (something like £150) and I thought that was too much money , when I could have a similar experience watching the show on DVD for £7.
Lee’s approach to comedy is just perfect. He’s so natural , and the way he talks to the audience is as though he’s talking to a group of old friends. You wouldn’t think that the tour was scripted ; not one bit , because it just flows so well and appears spontaneous. One thing which I love about him is the fact that his jokes are based on ‘normal , real life things’ which means absolutely everyone can relate to what he is saying , which also means everyone is in stitches because his jokes are mainly based on experiences which have happened to everyone , such as paying your bills over the phone.
Lee’s performances are always very visual. By that , I mean he never has to explain or go into too much detail when telling jokes ; his face is just enough. He some hilarious faces which he pulls as well as some funny actions. He also has some great ‘voices’ which he puts on which have me in stitches every single time , especially the ‘voice’ he has which represents a ‘stupid character’. Gets me in giggles every single time.
I found with this tour , the ‘subject’ he talks about most which makes me laugh , is his wife. I felt sorry for his wife (even if I did find it hilarious) on this tour as he ‘joked’ and took the ‘mickey’ out of her for ages. Such as when they go shopping , she has to go into every shop and he imitates her ; if someone said to her ‘run through the shopping centre’ she’d be ‘pulled’ into a shop. The way he demonstrated this was hilarious. However , he was polite enough to apologise and tell everyone how much his wife means to him , and without her he wouldn’t have the show because many of the jokes are based on their life. Sweet!
Whilst watching many of his earlier shows on the Paramount Comedy channel on SKY , I have noticed that some of his jokes have been taken from his other shows and so when watching those shows on the television , I have heard some of them already. Although all of the jokes on this DVD are brand new which is brilliant. Not one had I heard before , so I was happy!
One thing (only the one thing mind!) I disliked about this show was the ‘sketch’ he did in the middle. The sketch was about speed dating , and showed Lee acting out the parts of ‘people who go to speed dating meetings’. I didn’t find this bit funny at all , and found the show quite hard to get back into after this. I didn’t feel it had a place in the show , and also there wasn’t even a proper set , just Lee a spotlight , and I think the only prop was a chair. This ‘bit’ I found wasn’t necessary , as it appeared to ‘try-hard’ and the show was brilliant anyway and so the little sketch wasn’t needed to add extra humour, I think if something it just took it away. However , that is the only bad point I have to make.
I would definitely recommend this DVD - you certainly won’t regret it! However , I must warn you , there is a lot of strong language and ‘rude’ jokes , which is why it is a 15. Although if you don’t mind that kind of thing , then you’ll love it!
Thanks for reading! Happy Easter!
