Laurel Canyon starring Christian Bale and Kate Beckinsale is a drama revolving relationships, focussing mainly on the lifestyles of several characters and how that affects the relation of Bale and Beckinsale who has come to be in Bale’s mom’s empty house, only to find that she is yet to leave the house and is occupying the place with a music band(she is the producer of the recording company)
Bale has his internship to do while Beckinsale has to complete her research paper. This film is mainly a character study, with the film focusing on the intellectual couple being flown away with the tide of proceedings, Bale becoming friends with an attractive intern and Beckinsale loving the company and environment of the music scenario in the house. The new environment leads to more complex changes in the characters, something that can tear their relation apart.
The film looks very real and there is hardly any melodrama involved. Performances are pretty controlled, especially Beckinsale does a fine job. Bale is typecast in my memory and I cant see him beyond the batman series( his teeth and facial movements are somehow very batman-ish) which is an obstruction to his dialogue delivery. The ending is left open to the audience and I feel even the director/writers didn’t know how to end such a film.
A film that has its moments but doesn’t add up as a whole.
