A small Synopsis of each movie and my humble opinions on each to follow:
BUSY BODIES ************* I clearly remembered this film from the TV when I was a kid (a repeat even then I hasten to add). The boys are carpenters, loosely speaking, and they are hard at work in the woodshop really doing nothing, but causing chaos. This involves puncturing water pipes, getting stuck with lots of glue, heads getting jammed in windows, hitting each other with seemingly lethal tools and best of all cutting their car clean in half on a huge buzz saw!
Opinion ******* This short really is a laugh a second, possibly one of their best shorts. Made in 1939. Run Time 18 Minutes. ============================================================
DOUBLE WHOOPEE ****************** 1929 The boys arrive at swanky hotel for jobs as footman and doorman but get mistaken for a prince and his prime minister, after many gags and slip ups the error is realised and the boys are put to work in their proper places. Things don't get any better and the harassed guests are run ragged by the dopey duo. Including people falling down elevator shafts, being trapped in doors etc….
Opinion ******* They moved on to bigger and better things once sound came in. Made in 1939. Run Time 20 Minutes. ================================================================= =====
HOG WILD *********** Mrs Hardy wants an aerial mounted on the roof and so Ollie enlists the help of Stan! He was mad. They end up falling off the roof several times, smash the chimney to bits and finally Stan driving Ollie's car around the streets whilst Ollies is still atop the very ladder he was using to climb on the roof with.
Opinion ******* This is another simply brilliant short film with little speaking but plenty of comedic action. Made in 1930. Run Time 19 Minutes ================================================================== ==
Dirty Work ********* A mad scientist, professor Noodle, is working on a rejuvenation potion that can make you 30 years younger from just 1 drop. Enter Stan and Ollie's as chimney sweeps and all sorts of chaos ensues. Ollies goes onto the roof in order to stay as far away as possible from Stan. This is the worst and most dangerous place he could be! With Stan shoving poles up the chimney Ollie soon ends up off the roof on several occasions. Ollie eventually crashes down through the chimney ending up in the fire place. The living room, the lads and the sarcastic butler, Jessup, get covered in soot so the butler heads off to take a bath. In his absence the mad scientist calls on Stan and Ollie to help him Ollie falls in the rejuvenation bath and ends up changing into a chimp!
Opinion ******* The plot is a typical Laurel and Hardy farce with them at their best. Their brand of slapstick comedy will never fade. A real snap shot of the late twenties and thirties Made in 1933 when the boys where at their very best. Run Time 18 Minutes. ================================================================= =====
THE FINISHING TOUCH ********************** The boys try to build a house and accomplish it! In one day!! But whilst standing back and admiring it a bird lands on the chimney at bit by bit the house collapses. They all get embroiled in a huge fight and then the neighbours get drawn in, all mayhem ensues.
Opinion ******* The plot is a typical Laurel and Hardy farce but not one of their best. Made in 1928. Run Time 19 Minutes. ================================================================= =====
THE MUSIC BOX ***************
WELL THIS IS THE ONE EVRYONE MUST REMEMBER. MOVING THE PIANO UP THOSE HUNDREDS OF STAIRS!
The boys have been contracted as moves, more like destruction specialists.
The scene of them taking great pains with that piano is iconic and after all their efforts they still deliver it to the wrong house! Opinion ******* This won the Oscar as "Best Short Subject" of 1932
This is the best Laurel and Hardy short of them all; the DVD is worth it just for his one movie. Made in 1932. Run Time 29 Minutes. ============================================================
T he colourised version are a real treat and superb to watch.

Review of Laurel And Hardy - No. 14 - A Job To Do - Classic Shorts (DVD)
Advantages: All the brilliance of Laurel & Hardy, Music Box Disadvantages: none, if you are a fan of the comedy duo.
I love laurel and hardy, and the fact that most of their DVD's now cost much less than £10, for a number of episodes, can only be a good thing for fans of these two amazingly funny people. Almost all Luarel and Hardy are based around the same kind of silly slapstick jokes, and vicious remarks from Oli, but that doesn't make it any less funny. This DVD contains six individual short films, some also have an accompanying colour version. Some are really ... ...If you like Laurel and Hardy, you will love this paticular set of shorts, but i must admit, Laurel and Hardy is an acquired taste. My wife simply doesn't understand them and hence finds them un-funny. Personally, i usually have cripling pain in my side after watching them, from all the laughing. This is Laurel and Hardy at their best, so even if you've never experienced them before, at this price, they're well worth a go and you never know, you too ...
