Laurel And Hardy - Duck Soup / Why Girls Love Sailors / Putting Pants On Phil =========================================================== The Boys: ======== Stan Laurel (June 16 1890 – February 23 1965). Real name Arthur Stanley Jefferson. Stan was born in Lancashire but toured with Charlie Chaplin and hence on one tour ended up in America. He had ‘Arrived’
Oliver Hardy (January 18 1892 – August 7 1957). Real name Norvell Hardy. Ollie was born in Harlem, Georgia and his mother was apparently responsible for him going into theatre. Right from early childhood Ollie had a beautiful singing voice. Soon the two would meet. They first appeared together in a silent movie called ‘Slipping Wives’ in 1927. The rest is history.
The magnificent Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy star in this wonderfully funny collection of 3 films. 'Duck Soup', ‘Why Girls Love Sailors’ and ‘Putting Pants on Philip’
A brief synopsis and a short opinion of each and then a summary at the end will follow.
Duck Soup ======== The boys are Tramps and find an empty house in the woods. So of course they move in but then a forest fire breaks out and they are caught up in pretending to be the owners. Stan pretends to be Ollies maid! A plot they have used on other occasions. The film is a decent silent movie and has all of their regular trade marks. A good old funny comedy. Watch out for when Stan gets mad at Ollie, Superb. Made in 1927 Run Time 18 Minutes.
Why Girls Love Sailors ================= A VERY earlier outing for the boys and it shows. Ollie is a tough first mate aboard a very rough and tough ship, who kidnap Stans girlfriend. He must use his intelligence! or trust to luck to rescue his girlfriend, with comedic results.
Ollie is missing his trademark mustache looking very odd indeed. Both of the boys look very youthful. Made in 1927 Run Time 20 Minutes.
Putting Pants on Philip. ==================== Stan is from Scotland and loves chasing the girls in his kilt; however the kilt tends to flap up when he does. Ollie is a Pompous socialite who decides to take his nephew, Stan, in hand and teach his some etiquette and manners. He must be mad it’s Doooomed!
Not one of their best, it’s an early Laurel and Hardy and it shows. Not much in the way of gags but the slapstick is still a classic. Made in 1927 Runtime: 19 minutes
3 decent films but not some of their best work. Worth it if you find it in a bargain bucket, usually at Matalan by the tills.
