At 30 mins in length a good 90% of this is spent following the trial and tribulations of fat and stupid (as translated from their German nicknames Dick und Dorf) as they attempt to carry the music box up the stairs. The film opens with the tag line "Stan and Ollie decide to reorganise their finances - so they take their $3.80 and go into business". The business is Laurel and Hardy Transport Co and their latest job sees them delivering a boxed piano to a house at the top of a large flight of stairs. The fun begins before they even get on the first step with some great slapstick as they offload the piano from their horse drawn cart. A composer is trying to 'compose', of course, but his beautiful wife is distracting him. So he keeps avoiding her. Stan and Ollie come to sell mouse traps and Ollie ends up falling in love with her but with the usual hilarious and farcical results. ...I don't care what anyone says, and age is immaterial when it comes to Laurel And Hardy; these two comedians were pure genius. To watch a Laurel And Hardy movie is a thing of beauty, there stupidity hysterical, their clumsiness plausible. Up to the 1980's you could seldom go a week without seeing a Laurel & Hardy movie on TV, but since the mid 1980's they have been sadly vacant from UK television at least; a whole generation of viewers have been deprived. Laughing Gravy is one of their classics and one of the few movies in which they show consideration to something or someone before themselves. Stan (Stan Laurel) and Ollie (Oliver Hardy) are staying in an incredibly cheap boarding house, outside the snow falls heavily, inside its as cold as it is outside the only difference is that they have blankets to cover them.
