announcing arrivals like some inspired air traffic controller. A band from San Francisco stands next to a band from Algeria while a legend like - say - Tony Bennett - watches grinning. They say it shouldn't work but it does because this is the land of music where all men and women are created equal. So welcome to Later World where we present African greats like Youssou N'Dour, Khaled and Oumou Sangare alongside Buena Vista Social Club legends like Ibrahim Ferrer or Omara Portuondo, where the solo voice of a Sheila Chandra or a Cesaria Evora can still a packed studio until you can hear a pin drop or choral groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo or Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares can stun you with their harmonies. Here's a myriad of artists from a myriad of countries who bring grooves and haunting melodies, who play instruments you don't know the name of with blinding skill, sport the kind of native costumes that suggest heat and colour and look like they really love making their music. OK so 'Later's' been going quite a while - it's a broadcasting institution blah blah blah ... more
- but the truth is, it's only ever as good as the next artist that's on, the next moment when a band you love or a singer you've never heard of before stops you in your tracks and makes your heart melt. This is the eleventh DVD in our 'library' and the chance to catch up on many of the best of those moments from this side of the new millennium. 'Later with Jools Holland' is all about moments of becoming and moments of discovery; imagine you've switched on to see the band of the moment or some legend you've worshipped all your life and suddenly there's a girl with motorcycle boots, an elfin smile and an effects pedal who's playing a Bo Diddely beat and has got the whole studio swinging and it's KT Tunstall making her now famous TV debut. There's plenty of moments like that on this collection - step forward Ray Lamontagne, Devendra Banhart and James Morrison - plus plenty of bands announcing themselves as bound for the big time - take a bow The Killers, Scissor Sisters and, of course, Arctic Monkeys playing in a British TV studio for the first and only time! But there's plenty of other discoveries to be enjoyed in the Later landscape - the vast sculptural sound of Iceland's Sigur Ros, the sheer playfulness of France's Camille, the killer groove of Mali's Amadou and Mariam and on and on. There's legends too - Arthur Lee, David Gilmour, Toots and Billy Preston. Enjoy these and many other magical moments from the last 5 years or so, take a trip round the show with Jools on the 'Extras' and enjoy a sampling of great tracks from those other ten DVDs, a magical mystery tour of great musical moments.Track listing:Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down.KT Tunstall - Black Horse And The Cherry Tree.Coldplay - White Shadows.Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies).Love With Arthur Lee - You Set The Scene.Editors - Munich.Camille - Au Port.Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama.Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla. The Killers - Mr Brightside.Billy Preston and Jools Holland - That's The Way God Planned It.Devendra Banhart - A Sight To Behold.Snow Patrol with Martha Wainwright - Set The Fire To The Third Bar.Amadou and Mariam - Coulibaly.Babyshambles - Albion.K. DVD - they all undeniably belong in popular music's top drawer. While 'Later' prides itself on surfing the moment and capturing the arrival of major new talent, the show also delights in making the past present again. When Al Green magically revisits one of his classic 70s hits, 'How Can You mend A Broken heart?', time doesn't so much rewind as stop. Often there's an added poignancy to watching artists like Solomon Burke or Steve Winwood taking repossession of songs that made them in their youth, songs from decades back that they reawaken before their eyes. The fascination of these performances is that they show the journey that an artist and a song can make together over time, journeys in which they can find new ways of understanding each other. Pop music and maturity don't always go very well together but watch Dusty or Willie or Leonard Cohen on this DVD and you'll fin yourself agreeing with Jools that sometimes talent - like fine wine - just gets better with age.Tracklisting:01. I would just like to write a review on JoolsHolland Best of Friends, a CD with a DVD bonus pack on the king of rhythm and blues. We all know of him from his specials at New Year, along with the numerous shows that he does during the year.
As the title does actually point out, this is all about Jools performing with his friends. The tracks on the CD are as follows, along with who actually performed them with him:
1. JoolsHolland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra - Tuxedo Junction.
2. Lulu - Where have all the good guys gone?
3. Chrissie Hynde - Out of this world.
4. Edwin Starr - Snowflake Boogie (2007 Remix).
5. Norah Jones - In the dark.
6. George Harrison - Horse to the water (2007 Remix).
7. Ruby Turner - To love a chhild.
8. Prince Buster - Enjoy Yourself.
9. Sterophonics - First time ever I saw your face ...
Advantages: Variety / Very talented line up Disadvantages: None
The Later series with JoolsHolland picks up from where the Old Grey Whistle Test left off combining live studio performances with band interviews - presented by musician, JoolsHolland. The series includes 'Later.. Louder' (which is punk and heavier rock), 'Ten Years Later' (bands popular in the 90's), and 'Cool Britania' (British artists). The 'Later.. Giants' covers the performances by artists who are literally 'Giants' in the business and without fail all of the artists on this DVD are incredibly influential and occasionally some of the artists are Icons.
What I enjoy most about JoolsHolland, is the fact that he, himself, is a great musician, so the programme becomes like a jam session when he plays along with his guests. I think it would be amazing to meet Jools and play on his show, as the atmosphere is terrific - much like ...
Advantages: Good performances from quality bands Disadvantages: Some duff tracks
I like the 'Later' programmes. They seem to fit somewhere inbetween Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test. I'm far too old for TOTP's these days (I found this out when I caught myself muttering 'What a load of cr*p' it was some time ago) and The Old Grey Whistle Test is long gone (and I was a bit young for that and The Tube).
The only thing I find mildly irritating about 'Later' is JoolsHolland - which is a bit of a shame seeing as he's the host. It's just that he often wants to join in with everything, that and the fact that he's very smug sometimes. Thankfully he doesn't do much joining in on this one.
For anyone who doesn't know what Later is... it's basically a music show set in a large studio that has a host of bands set up, ready to play live. JoolsHolland is the compere and as mentioned before he often joins in ...
Tracklist includes: Solomon Burke - 'Everybody Needs Somebody', Ray Davies - 'You Really Got Me', Robert Plant - 'Let The Boogie Woogie Roll', Jimmy Cliff - 'You Can Get It...', Huey - 'Fly Me To The Moon', Roisin Murphy - 'The Time Is Now', Dr. John - 'Such A Night', Beverly Knight - 'A Change Is Gonna Come', Kirsty MacColl - 'Miss Otis Regrets', and many more.
