The Later series with Jools Holland picks up from where the Old Grey Whistle Test left off combining live studio performances with band interviews - presented by musician, Jools Holland. The series includes 'Later.. Louder' (which is punk and heavier rock), 'Ten Years Later' (bands popular in the 90's), and 'Cool Britania' (British artists). The 'Later.. Giants' covers the performances by artists who are literally 'Giants' in the business and without fail all of the artists on this DVD are incredibly influential and occasionally some of the artists are Icons.
What I enjoy most about Jools Holland, is the fact that he, himself, is a great musician, so the programme becomes like a jam session when he plays along with his guests. I think it would be amazing to meet Jools and play on his show, as the atmosphere is terrific - much like a great pub where all your mates have turned up to watch you play. The bands set up in a circle and get to interact, instead of being through the back and brought on for a slot.
Jools Holland, was born Julian Miles Holland on January 24, 1958 in Blackheath, South East London. By time he was 8, he could play the piano fluently by ear, and by the time he reached his early teens he was playing regularly in many of the pubs in South East London and the East End Docks. At 15, Jools was introduced to Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford; together they formed Squeeze. They were joined by Gilson Lavis (who had already played with BB King, Chuck Berry, and Max Wall). In 1987, Jools formed The Jools Holland Big Band which has gradually becaome an 18-piece Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. They play an average of 100 live shows each year.

My favourite parts are Johnny Cash, Solomon Burke and Pete Townshend, but if you love music you will appreciate all of these artists. There is real variety, with punk, rock, blues, country styles of playing. One of the best parts of buying this DVD is you are opened up to hearing new artists and if you like them, you can try a full CD/DVD of their music. I play this DVD when my mums here, as many of the artists have been around for a while and she has also been a fan for years. I think it can appeal to all ages!
The full running time is 121 minutes with 20 minutes of extras as well. The extras are slightly longer interviews with some of the artists, including Paul McCartney and Johnny Cash. Jools also shows you around the set before a show starts, and tells you how they have cake in the dressing rooms! I only watched the extras once, but I think its great value without anyway. I bought mine for £16 in HMV, but it would be cheaper online. For the amount of times I've watched it, I've already had good value...
