First there was Britpop, then there was anthem pop and, lately, there's been the new art ... more
pop, all of it chronicled on Britain's best live music show. Ever since Britpop, our guitar bands have also been pop bands - sometimes this has made them a touch too polite and certainly Oasis and Blur still cast a long shadow over all the bands that have come after them - but as a result the last ten years have been rich in big tunes with singalong qualities. Sure, there's still a divide between the angular types - Blur, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, The Futureheads - and the boys in their streetclothes singing about hope and misery - Oasis, Travis, Snow Patrol, Coldplay and many more - but there's a common interest in getting over and getting to the chorus. Of course, 'Later' isn't just about boys and girls with guitars, bass and drums, but new British guitar bands are central to the show's DNA, and this collection of over 35 magic moments from the best of new British guitar pop concentrates strongly on the last 18 months - the return of Morrissey, the rise of Hard-Fi, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight etc - while harking back to some classic sessions from the likes of The Verve, Radiohead, Suede and Manic Street Preachers. Cool Britannia just keeps on coming, here's some of the coolest cream.
Fans of BBC2's late-night showLater ... with Jools Hollandwill already know what to expect ... more
from this lavish double CD spread. Around two thirds of the acts featured on this release had their TV debuts on the show, which sees veteran muso Jools Holland present the best of up and coming and established pop artists in a wide range of genres from hip hop and world to jazz, blues and rock. A quick look at the tracklisting reveals the caliber of artists to have appeared on the show (which has been running non-stop since 1992): Amy Winehouse, Kasabian, Lily Allen, The White Stripes, Keane, James Blunt, The Flaming Lips, Lily Allen, Muse and Kings Of Leon are some of the bigger names, while Richard Hawley, Estelle, Jose Gonzales, Kano, Primal Scream, CSS and Hard Fi radiate a more alternative, under-the-radar appeal. The live versions of Winehouse's "Tears Dry on Their Own," Hawley's "Valentine" Gnarls Barley's "Crazy," Seasick Steve's "Doghouse Blues" and Kasabian's "Empire" are just a few of the reasons Jools fans will want to own this enchanting profile of contemporarypop.--Danny McKenna

Advantages: Radiohead! Disadvantages: No Pyramid Song
applause when it was finished.
Then after two relatively upbeat songs, Radiohead decided to revert to the tried and tested, depressing but brillliant style used on the so-good-it hurts third album, OK Computer. The track was Lucky, and that's how the audience felt after being graced by its presence. A slow song with a thunderous chorus, this song was always a favourite of mine on OK Computer, and hearing it live adds so much character.
Next, lest we forget Radiohead had an amazing brand spanking new album out at all they played the starting track from Amnesiac, Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box. With Thom whining about what a reasonable man he is and a lot of cool noises going off in the background, it was a nice normal first track to do from Amnesiac. I think if they'd played Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors half the crowd would have ...
Advantages: Less than a tenner for some corking performances Disadvantages: Some duff tracks
I reviewed one of these JoolsHolland, 'Later' DVD's previously ('Giants'). In that review I laid out the pro's and con's of the whole 'Later' programme. For me the downside is often JoolsHolland feeling unable to resist joining in on piano with just about anything that takes his fancy. On the plus side you usually find that the bands involved try to put on a good performance and the production values (usually good sound and camera work) are also of a high standard.
I bought this because I wanted a blast of Britpop and the bands included were the bands at the forefront of that movement (Oasis, Blur, Elastica, Pulp, Suede, Paul Weller, etc etc). I'll get the tracklisting out of the way so you know exactly what's on the DVD (this being the thing that usually persuades someone to buy the DVD in the first place!):
ARTIST - SONG TITLE ...
I would just like to write a review on JoolsHolland Best of Friends, a CD with a DVD bonus pack on the king of rhythm and blues. We all know of him from his specials at New Year, along with the numerous shows that he does during the year.
As the title does actually point out, this is all about Jools performing with his friends. The tracks on the CD are as follows, along with who actually performed them with him:
1. JoolsHolland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra - Tuxedo Junction.
2. Lulu - Where have all the good guys gone?
3. Chrissie Hynde - Out of this world.
4. Edwin Starr - Snowflake Boogie (2007 Remix).
5. Norah Jones - In the dark.
6. George Harrison - Horse to the water (2007 Remix).
7. Ruby Turner - To love a chhild.
8. Prince Buster - Enjoy Yourself.
9. Sterophonics - First time ever I saw your face ...
