This film is one of the greatest renditions of the problems faced in Africa ever. It is based on the novel by journalist Giles Foden. Focusing on the rise of Ugandan President Idi Amin and his reign as dictator from 1971 to 1979, the novel is a fictional memoir of a Scottish doctor in Amin's employ based on impressions of actual events. The Last King of Scotland tells the fictional story of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young Scottish doctor who travels to Uganda and becomes the personal physician to the dictator Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). The movie is based on factual events of Amin's rule.
This film is a brilliantly made story with terrifying factual accuracies of Idi Amin. Forest Whitaker is unforgettable is his performance and has received so much accolade for it. It is 'one of the great performances of modern movie history' (Wall Street Journal), 'nothing short of OSCAR worthy' (Associated Press). His portrayal of Idi Amin is ideal, making the viewer feel constantly uneasy when he is on camera due to his highly volatile character. Im sure very few people would have felt any kind of safety when around Amin and it gives the exact same feeling in this film.
This film has been fantastically popular and is one for anyone who remembers the problems in Uganda as well as anyone who is interested in it.
I definatly advise anyone who is considering it to buy this film as it is simply fantastic. But then dont just take my word for it;

Advantages: An all star cast give the film the gravitas it deserves Disadvantages: I would liked to have seen more glimpses into the politics of the region
Advantages: captivating story, great historical aspect of the somewhat obscure region Disadvantages: very few, has some scenes of torture which are not for the faint hearted
Advantages: A good thriller with its roots in history, fantastic performance by Forest Whitaker Disadvantages: Difficult to feel empathy with the "hero", some violent scenes
Advantages: An amazing central performance from Whitaker, strong direction, characterisation and writing. Disadvantages: Some characters are clear plot devices.
