When Mari (Sara Paxton) and her parents John (Tony Goldwyn) and Emma (Monica Potter) plan a blissful time away at their holiday home, all Mari wants is to spend time away with her lifelong friend Paige. Although a little reluctant the couple soon agree to let Mari go off to be with her friend. Joining Paige in her place of work the couple stumble across Justin, an emotionally disturbed teenager who offers to take them home and supply them with drugs on the condition that Paige turns a blind eye on age restricted products. What Mari and Paige are unaware of however is that Justin is the son of a notorious killer who while being transported to a high security prison is set free by his brother Francis, and girlfriend Sadie. When Justin’s father Krug and his followers meet up with Mari and Paige it’s a sorry tale for the two girls, with a very final ending; but for John and Emma revenge is the only solution.
I won’t deny I have never been a fan of the original movie, its okay tolerable viewing but its story was just too simplistic and combined with fairly inferior direction skills by the then unknown Wes Craven, the movie just did not rest easy with me. I just found it too over-hyped and under developed. Now I appreciate that purists will condemn me for this, but I have to say I actually prefer the 2009 remake. From the offset it takes some of the simplicity out of the story, developing the characters and their relationships, so that you find it easier to relate to some of the characters. Things that took place in the original were often without motive, or at least so it seemed. With this remake all the actions make a lot more sense. But with these positives raised, I have to say its still failing in a lot of areas.
The biggest failing I found with the movie was the terrible continuity, I appreciate in small enclosed sets its often difficult to match up various scenes; but it seems little attention has been given at all to the movie. While continuity in the open against a woodland backdrop was fine, when the action moves to a house where Krug and his clan meet up with Mari’s parents having performed unspeakable acts on their daughter, things just lose their glimmer. Characters in close proximity often end up being a fair distance apart when camera angles change. In a by the sink fight one of the characters suffers varying degrees of being wet with no continuity between the two. Similar acts of bad matching up of shots continue to through the rest of the movie; now I know this might seem quite petty, but by the movies end it grows to become really annoying.
One thing Wes Craven did manage in the original was to disgust us with the ordeal that Mari and Paige endure. I have concerns that this remake aims to titillate more than anything else. Mari is frequently shot from up-skirt, and a lot of scenes seem to require her to be caught in her underwear. A lot of attention is spent on her getting dressed after a shower. During a rape scene the camera seems to levitate that little bit too long. While the rape scene is rather long, it feels very clinical and not a dirty sordid experience as it was depicted in the original. Krug and co. are also a little bit too clean for my liking, in the original they really looked dirty and unpleasant.
Its nice to see both Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter back on screen, it seems like such a long time ago that these two very talented actors did anything. In fairness their acting talents are fairly wasted here, but I think the big deal was that they were both one-time big names, and help draw a level of credibility to the movie. That is of course before you see it!
The biggest issue I have with the movie is the final moments, the original became notorious for its disembowelment scene; and it seems that this movies director was keen to live up to the reputation of Wes Craven. Almost like it was tapped on at the end there is this ridiculous scene in which father John gets a final revenge, and while its explosive it looks stupid beyond belief and incredibly out of place.
Yes this time round the movie is better, its more expertly crafted; but its still got a lot missing. There is still much work to be done, and I suspect that before I shuffle off this mortal coil that we might be subjected to another remake of the movie. One thing in my mind is for sure however if I had to watch either of the two again in the foreseeable future this will be the version I’d watch even despite its monumental flaws.

...thing I knew about The Last House on the Left was that it was a thriller or horror (or both) simply by the look of its cover. Picking this film was possibly one of the better decisions I have ever made for a Halloween film (a film to watch on Halloween) unlike last year when I watched The Shining, but let’s not get off topic. I found that it is best going into this film not knowing what is going to happen or as little as possible about the storyline, ... ...place (hence the name The Last House On the Left). The pair meets another teenager at random who they court stealing and promises than “the best weed ever”, and they eventually ...

Horror films are a dime a dozen, remakes are too, but lst house on the left is a remake that is actually better than the original. LHOTL is a horror film directed by Dennis Iliadis and stars Tony Goldwin and Monica potter.
The film starts with Mari (Sarah Paxton) moving to a lake house with her mom and dad. She takes the family car to a store where her friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac) works. There they meets a young boy named Justin who invites them ... ...out Krug, (Garrit Dillahunt) Justin’s father, shows up with Justins uncle and Krugs girlfriend who break up the party. Krugg shows them a newspaper showing how he killed two police officers while escaping jail, he then believes it is too risky to let Mari and Paige go and kidnaps them. While going down a road a fight breaks out in the car and they crash, the girls are brought out and Mari is raped in front of everyone (this is the most disturbing ...

Advantages: none that I can think of. Disadvantages: Too many to mention.
everything imagineable (Salo.). As such, I have found myself on a crusade to watch as many of these 'banned' films as possible, to fulfill my bloodlust.
I picked up a copy of the infamous, Wes Craven classic ' Lasthouse on the left; on Ebay for about a quid, now that they have reduced P&P on dvd's to nothing! So, I slipped it into the DVD player with great anticipation. My palms were sweaty, and I was genuinely excited at the prospect of watching the film. But how would it turn out in the end?
The truth is I don't know.... The end I mean.... I didn't see it. I couldn't stomach it. Not, rather unfortunately, because of the gore involved, or because of the way that it disturbs you. No, I was put off by the fact that the film was total and utter crap. I actually think that I deserve a medal for martyring through as far as I did.

with a junkie, and a woman who is horrible. Its meant to be a horror film, but it has a gritty feel, and a realism. This is basically a revenge movie
The two girls end up inside the escaped prisoners hideout just planning to get some blow. Well things go wrong and they end up getting raped by the two escapees, (personally I feel that they show too much of this) in some woods. Not known thougn to the two escapes that the house they pass actually belongs to Mary's parents.
They end up seeking refuge in the house, and it doesn't take long for the two parents to figure out that they have killed their daughter. In a way the father lays some traps around the house and it turns into Home alone for a couple of minutes, with like shaving foam placed outside the door, and the door handle being wired up to the electrictricty.

Advantages: You can say you have seen it Disadvantages: Shock factor movie, with little plot
Long before A Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream, director Wes Craven was involved in a few unpleasant movies. His first ever movie as Director is by far his sickest offering, made in 1971 LastHouse On The Left is far more shocking and disturbing than movies like Saw and Hostel. In fact in the UK it is still considered so shocking that to this date the movie has not ever been seen in its uncut form, although that being said there is a grey area of this that says that nobody has truly seen the uncut movie, and that different countries all offer slight variations of the "Uncut" movie, but more of this later.

DVD Description
Based on Wes Craven's landmark 1972 exploitation flick of the same name, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a brutal movie that exposes the darkest recesses of human depravity. The simple plot follows four criminals on the lam who encounter a pair of nubile female teens in a small mountain town. After murdering one and brutally raping the other and leaving her for dead, the cons seek refuge at a nearby summer house. The twist is that it's the very home inhabited by the parents of one of the victims. Upon learning that their house guests raped and tortured their 17-year-old daughter, the couple exact a revenge that arguably exceeds the excesses of the sociopathic gang.
When originally released in 1972, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was a shock to the system. Never before had a film shown such images of human wickedness. Grainy and low budget, the original film played like a maniacal cackle from the seedy underbelly of an America nursing a brutal post-Aquarian hangover. Things play out a little differently, though, in 2009. For starters, the movie actually looks quite beautiful, and the story’s idyllic mountain setting is milked for all it's worth. The performances are noteworthy as well, with Garret Dillahunt more than convincing as Krug, the gang's swaggering leader; and Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn portraying the distressed parents with an effective mix of panic, courage, and blind instinct. In an age marked by both increasingly ghastly films and a public discourse that actually debates the merits of institutional torture, a film like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT really shouldn’t shock anyone. But in both the original and the remake, there’s a latent nihilism that permeates the world. The idea of a sense of lawlessness that cannot be understood or prevented, but only reacted against, is truly disquieting and makes this story unique in the annals of horror.
