Director: John McTiernan Producers: John McTiernan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Writers: Zak Penn, Shane Black, David Arnott and Adam Leff. Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, F. Murray Abraham, Charles Dance, Tom Noonan and Bridgette Wilson
Released in June 1993 this two hour and ten minute action packed movie follows the story of a boys unfortunate misfortune as he becomes part of the movie scene….
** BRIEF PLOT **
Danny Madigan, (played by Austin O'Brien) is a lonely boy, living with his mother Irene, (played by Mercedes Ruehl), in a rough part of New York city… his only friend being a theatre manager named Nick, (played by Robert Prosky).
When Danny takes a late night viewing at the theatre Nick gives him half a special gold ticket, telling him it that the ticket was given to him by Houdini himself… So when Danny settles down in the theatre to watch the preview of the latest Jack Slater
movie things take a little bit of a serious twist for him… bringing reality and movie life together as one… uniting Danny with his all time movie hero Jack Slater, (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), inside the big screen…?
At first Danny seems to relish in the idea of mixing with his greatest screen idol Jack, (and his daughter Whitney Slater/Meredith Caprice , (played by Bridgette Wilson), who Danny instantly falls for), trying to convince the muscle bound hero that he is only a movie star, he soon realises that there are more troubles heading his way when Mr Benedict, (played by Charles Dance), a rather frightening criminal with a changeable eye, uncovers the truth about the special golden ticket and soon begins to threaten everything in both movie world and the real world, so Danny has to act fast before fictional horror characters start escaping from the big screen… including the Ripper, (played by Tom Noonan), one of Slater's greatest foes who is intent on killing the on screen hero… and Death himself, (played by Sir Ian McKellen).
** IN CONCLUSION **
A great movie with such a fine, (and all round fun), story line. It is an action packed thriller with a good dollop of comedy, giving the movie a fantastic entertainment factor.
The acting is good enough to keep the viewer from hitting the stop button, especially the remarkably frightening calm looking Charles Dance as the mad man with the interchangeable false eye… but if this was a football game (soccer in the states) and I had to give a man of the match award for best performance it would have to go to Austin O'Brien for his brilliantly performed role as Danny Madigan, the kid with the love of movies… this young man plays his part so professionally that you'd think he was born on screen and that was all he knew… (appearing in other films such as Lawnmower man 1 & 2, Apollo 13, My Girl and many others…) Then we have the main character of this movie… Arnold Schwarzenegger…who is his usual half wooden, dodgy accented self but as the world has come to expect that from the big man it seems to fit him well in with his part as the seemingly immortal fictional hero… it does seem that the 'tackier' his acting the better the movie becomes, if you know what I mean..?
As for the special effects and stunts…? well I am the first to admit that they do seem a little tacky, and somewhat amateurish, especially the rather bizarre car crashes and a very unusual rooftop funeral scenario… but this all seems to add to the brilliance of this comedy.
It is a movie with everything that is needed for a good bit of entertainment, it has action, thrills, spills, car chases, more action, explosions, shootings, a few twists, a lot of slapstick comedy and a little bit of romance… come on… what's missing out of that list..? (apart from horror… although watching some of Schwarzenegger's acting can cover this…?)
* Would I recommend this?
Yes I would… It may not be the greatest of movies but for shear entertaining slapstick comedy then it does stand out from the crowd. And as you can get this from Amazon from as little as £4.00 you can't go wrong…
