Last Action Hero must surely rate as Arnie’s worst movie ever. Based on an incredibly silly and overcomplicated plot it never seems to make up its mind on whether it is one of his usual violent offerings or a lame attempt at comedy whilst achieving neither end to any great effect.
The Plot...
A little boy gets to see a special sneak preview of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (excuse the spelling) latest movie. but gets sucked into the movie and must take part in all the goings on. And that is about it.
so...
...So the rest is predictable. Arnie runs around killing bad guys with the kid in tow and lots of guns get fired and lots of things explode and it looks all very exciting. The problem here is that the movie is meant to be a parody of the usual violent Arnie film but just isn’t funny. One minute the film is ultra violent and the next its like a Disney flick...it just doesn’t work. You can’t get into the action because of all the lame attempts at humour and you can’t find it funny because of the violent side of things. Couple this with the fact that the whole thing looks thrown together; a load of ideas to parody Arnie films jumbled up and thrown at the silver screen does not make for enjoyable viewing.
Once again Arnie proves that he should stick to what he does best and stay away from the comedy side of things. 'Twins' was a good film because of the performance of Danny DeVito and a good script, not because Arnie was funny. In fact he looked clumsy and awkward with the role all the way through which should have given him some clue to perhaps stay away from the comedy side...but alas no and here is the result.
The idea here is good and should have made a great film, however its execution is unbelievably bad...avoid at all costs
