Director: John McTiernan Producers: John McTiernan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Writers: Zak Penn, Shane Black, David Arnott and Adam Leff. Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, F. Murray Abraham, Charles Dance, Tom Noonan and Bridgette Wilson
Released in June 1993 this two hour and ten minute action packed movie follows the story of a boys unfortunate misfortune as he becomes part of the movie scene….
** BRIEF PLOT **
Danny Madigan, (played by Austin O'Brien) is a lonely boy, living with his mother Irene, (played by Mercedes Ruehl), in a rough part of New York city… his only friend being a theatre manager named Nick, (played by Robert Prosky).
When Danny takes a late night viewing at the theatre Nick gives him half a special gold ticket, telling him it that the ticket was given to him by Houdini himself… So when Danny settles down in the theatre to watch the preview of the latest Jack Slater movie things take a little bit of a serious twist for him… bringing reality and movie life together as one… uniting Danny with his all time movie hero Jack Slater, (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger), inside the big screen…?
At first Danny seems to relish in the idea of mixing with his greatest screen idol Jack, (and his daughter Whitney Slater/Meredith Caprice , (played by Bridgette Wilson), who Danny instantly falls for), trying to convince the muscle bound hero that he is only a movie star, he soon realises that there are more troubles heading his way when Mr Benedict, (played by Charles Dance), a rather frightening criminal with a changeable eye, uncovers the truth about the special golden ticket and soon begins to threaten everything in both movie world and the real world, so Danny has to act fast before fictional horror characters start escaping from the big screen… including the Ripper, (played by Tom Noonan), one of Slater's greatest foes who is intent on killing the on screen hero… and Death himself, (played by Sir Ian McKellen).
** IN CONCLUSION **
A great movie with such a fine, (and all round fun), story line. It is an action packed thriller with a good dollop of comedy, giving the movie a fantastic entertainment factor.
The acting is good enough to keep the viewer from hitting the stop button, especially the remarkably frightening calm looking Charles Dance as the mad man with the interchangeable false eye… but if this was a football game (soccer in the states) and I had to give a man of the match award for best performance it would have to go to Austin O'Brien for his brilliantly performed role as Danny Madigan, the kid with the love of movies… this young man plays his part so professionally that you'd think he was born on screen and that was all he knew… (appearing in other films such as Lawnmower man 1 & 2, Apollo 13, My Girl and many others…) Then we have the main character of this movie… Arnold Schwarzenegger…who is his usual half wooden, dodgy accented self but as the world has come to expect that from the big man it seems to fit him well in with his part as the seemingly immortal fictional hero… it does seem that the 'tackier' his acting the better the movie becomes, if you know what I mean..?
As for the special effects and stunts…? well I am the first to admit that they do seem a little tacky, and somewhat amateurish, especially the rather bizarre car crashes and a very unusual rooftop funeral scenario… but this all seems to add to the brilliance of this comedy.
It is a movie with everything that is needed for a good bit of entertainment, it has action, thrills, spills, car chases, more action, explosions, shootings, a few twists, a lot of slapstick comedy and a little bit of romance… come on… what's missing out of that list..? (apart from horror… although watching some of Schwarzenegger's acting can cover this…?)
* Would I recommend this?
Yes I would… It may not be the greatest of movies but for shear entertaining slapstick comedy then it does stand out from the crowd. And as you can get this from Amazon from as little as £4.00 you can't go wrong… * Soundtrack

Advantages: Action Disadvantages: This isn't 'The Terminator'
...things that people have labelled Last Action Hero down the years, however, I still can't bring myself to hate it. It's hardly amazing, I'll admit, but I'd still much rather watch this than half the action films that come out these days. It's a self-conscious parody of action movie clichés (made famous primarily by Schwarzenegger himself) and for the most part it comes across quite entertaining. There's plenty of moments concerned with Arnie blowing ... ...you punch through glass!) Last Action Hero is basically a movie within a movie, which attempts to blur the lines between reality and fantasy. While this may not sound like anything new or exciting to most viewers, it does at least allow for some great moments of action and comedy. There's a particularly memorable moment where Arnie walks into a video store and notices a cardboard cut-out for Terminator 2, which stars *ahem* Sylvester Stallone. As ...

...even larger fortune into The Last Action Hero, another nearly plotless, in-jokey charade that will annoy just about everyone who comes into contact with it.
Whether you happen to be responsible for sinking $100 million into its creation, or just the $6.75 it now costs for a first-run movie ticket in Seattle, or $3 for the video that will probably be in stores by November, you're going to find yourself wondering why this was supposed to be one of ... ...the Bruce Willis misfire, The Last Boy Scout. In an industry in which Joe Eszterhas is paid $1 million for writing Sliver, it's hardly surprising that these people continue to enjoy solid reputations.
The director, John McTiernan, has never quite matched his one great success, Die Hard. He gets perfunctory performances from nearly everyone, and the action scenes rely on being bigger rather than better - more explosions, more bullets, more wrecked ...

Last Action Hero must surely rate as Arnie’s worst movie ever. Based on an incredibly silly and overcomplicated plot it never seems to make up its mind on whether it is one of his usual violent offerings or a lame attempt at comedy whilst achieving neither end to any great effect.
The Plot...
A little boy gets to see a special sneak preview of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (excuse the spelling) latest movie. but gets sucked into the movie and must take ... ...it.
so...
...So the rest is predictable. Arnie runs around killing bad guys with the kid in tow and lots of guns get fired and lots of things explode and it looks all very exciting. The problem here is that the movie is meant to be a parody of the usual violent Arnie film but just isn’t funny. One minute the film is ultra violent and the next its like a Disney flick...it just doesn’t work. You can’t get into the action because of all the lame attempts ...

Advantages: The cast aren't too bad Disadvantages: Story
Even from the outset the premise for this film is bad - wee kiddie wink gets to have his big screen hero come to life after getting to see the latest movie before anyone else does (when his cinema owning friend lets him in late at night). This idea of magic bringing things to life belongs squarely in Disney kids film territory and to see it used as the underlying idea for an action movie just stinks.
The cast are saddled with a terrible script and ... ...than an art gallery hosting a cameo exhibition (that's awful Neil and you know it). Charles Dance tries to be menacing but is doing little more than revisiting the character he created in The Golden Child (another disasterous mix of 'family' entertainment and action).
It's obvious that Arnie thought this was a wise career move and might open up his appeal to a wider audience but it has quite the opposite effect. Action fans will hate the 'cuteness' ...

Advantages: Arnie is in it! Disadvantages: It lacks good action
Compared to other films by Director John McTiernan (Die Hard, Predator) this film is pretty weak. And Arnold Scwarzenegger has done better stuff. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it the first time round, when I was about 12, but it just does'nt fulfill my craving for action! Don't let the title fool you, it isn't jam packed with action....

While watching the new Jack Slater movie, the golden ticket glows blue and Danny lands up in the back seat of Jack's car. The ticket has put him in the movie, and things are not quite normal, such as everybodies phone number starts with 555, and more importantly, Jack can't die! Danny saw the criminals that killed Jack's Cousin at the start and so convinces Jack to visit their massive ...

Advantages: One good and one reasonable film Disadvantages: None really
being the slight overdoing of the final action scenes
Overall this is a good Sci-Fi film that will unfortunately be classed as an 'Arnie' rather than as a stand-alone item of it's own. In terms of 'Arnies' it is one of the better ones and deserves more credit than it gets.

RUNNING TIME: 130 min approx.
PLOT: Danny is a huge movie know it all. Danny's ticket transports him inside the movie, as he is watching it, he can't believe he is standing next to his all time hero, Jack Slater. However, things go drastically wrong, a villian gets hold of the ticket, and goes to the real word, when some criminals win! It's a truly amazing story!
CAST ...
Advantages: Flows well, Arnie's back in the jungle! Disadvantages: Formulaic
Arnie befriends a young woman who he takes under his protection. After blowing the crap out of the terrorist camp he escapes with the woman and her son but doesnt succeed in his mission to ice the wolf.
Back in LA there is a terrorist threat by the wolf again and Arnie, with the help of an incompetent FBI, uses the woman to identify the wolf on cctv.
There are some good firefights and explosions and Collateral Damage has a more grown up feeling than many of Arnie's offerings. Without spoiling the film for you, there is an interesting twist in the plot and the final twenty minutes of the film are really exciting.
Nice ending and good all round performance from the cast and the director. A good Schwarzenegger film that might just be one of his last offerings in his traditional actionhero role.

DVD Description
Arnold Schwarzenegger and director John McTiernan (DIE HARD) join forces again in, THE LAST ACTION HERO, a heart racing thriller in which a young boy uses a magical ticket to infiltrate his favorite movie. Danny (Austin O'Brien) passes through the movie screen and into the whirlwind life of crusader Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger) becoming his sidekick. But when the villains learn that they too can travel back and forth between cinema and reality, it's up to Jack Slater to put a stop their havoc wreaking.
Once a character in the "Jack Slater 4" film, Danny takes on the role of Slater's sidekick, and together they combat Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn), Benedict (Charles Dance), and The Ripper (Tom Noonan), an infamous troika bent on global malice. Trouble really however, when Benedict gets a hold of Danny's magic ticket, and travels to the real world laying waste to Times Square. Jack Slater leaves his cinematic bubble and follows the villain into reality--a reality where heroes don't always win.
Like a prophet armed with fire, director John McTiernan uses explosive action and booming special effects to foretell of a time when hyper reality will be achieved with the ease of buying a ticket to a movie.
