the days of the original PlayStation. With updated graphics and gameplay, and a whole new suite of moves and equipment this is the sequel fans have always demanded. The lowdown:After the disappointment of Angel of Darkness, the Tomb Raider series has gone back to basics with a new developer and even a new Lara. Combat is back to being only around a third of the game with everything else centred on platform jumping and puzzle solving. To help this, there's a canny new movement system that allows Lara to jump onto and grab objects at an angle, so there's none of the awkward grid based movement of the earliergames. This is also the first Tomb Raider to have a proper physics engine, with lots of the puzzles revolving around movement and the use of Lara's natty new magnetic grappling hook. The graphics are also excellent, and with input from the original creator this is a long awaited return to form. Most exciting moment:The realisation that this is actually a proper update of the original game, as Lara leaps around cliffs like a mountain goat, with graphics and controls that aren't still stuck in 1996.Since you ask:The new voice of Lara is provided by Keeley Hawes, who also plays Zoe Reynolds in BBC TV show Spooks. The bottom line:Lara Croft is back in the first decent new Tomb Raider game for a long time.Harrison Dent
Darknesswith all the puzzle-solving, platform-clambering action you'd expect. The game's intro sees Lara being hunted down by Parisian gendarmes and accused of a crime she didn't commit. This forces her, once she escapes their initial attacks, to uncover the mystery of the evil Nephilim. The first thing you'll notice when playingThe Angel of Darknessis that they've changed the control system to try and make it fully analogue--but it hasn't really worked and lining up for jumps in particular is now infuriatingly difficult. You do get used to it but there's going to be a goodly proportion of fans who'll just immediately give up in disgust. This is a shame because apart from that one (admittedly fairly major) blunder the game is pretty good and far more inventive than any previousTomb Raidergame. For starters there's no set path through the game, but plenty of minor and major plot branching: you now have the chance to talk to people and further affect the route the game's plot takes. You can also try out a new stealth mode, hand-to-hand fighting, a rather spurious RPG-style attribute upgrade system and even play as a new male character. The Angel of Darknessisn't even close to perfect but apart from the appalling new control system it's mostly all good news and once you start clambering over and under all the new buildings and tombs you'll start to remember just why this series has remained so popular over the years. --David Jenkins

...to the original movie, “LaraCroft: TombRaider – The Cradle Of Life”.
Even though my daughter (and her dad) has since moved onto bigger and infinitely better video games with the purchase of a PlayStation 2, we still went to see the new LaraCroft movie in its opening week. And we now eagerly await its release on DVD, most likely before Christmas.
~ ~ Are you beginning to get the general impression that I like TombRaider?
Have I managed to adequately convey the huge amount of pleasure this fictional character has given to my young daughter over the years?
And she is not alone!! Countless thousands of youngsters (and some not so young) have enjoyed the exploits of Lara, and no doubt will continue to do so in the future, helped by the recent release of the very first LaraCroft game for the PlayStation console.
~ ~ So why...

Advantages: action packed, amazing special effects Disadvantages: Some may find it all too predictable.
...Having been a fan of the Tombraider computer games since their release, I was excited about seeing LaraCroft's character being transformed into a real life character on the big screen!
Having thoroughly enjoyed Angelina Jolie's first big screen outing as Laracroft, I was eager to see if the sequel could live up to it!
The critics gave it a very poor review but this didn't deter me from purchasing the DVD on the day of its release, and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
Plot
LaraCroft ( Angelina Jolie) returns in her second feature outing, and this time is on a round the world mission to recover Pandora's Box before it is found by a maniacal scientist ( Ciaran Hinds) who plans to use it for mass annihilation!
For this mission she recruits former lover Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a mercenary who has previously betrayed...

Advantages: Angelina is wonderful; lots of action; gorgeous dogs Disadvantages: Weak plot; choreographed fighting scenes
...Croft character in fact.
She readily admitted that the role required little acting talent but she did work at it. Before the film she studied with the SAS and spend almost a year in England, learning about the nobility (I didn’t know there were any left).
TombRaider made $48.2 million in the first week in the States. Whether that says a lot for the success of the TombRaider games, the gullibility of the American public or the size of Angelina Jollie’s fan club (or the size of anything else), I’m not sure.
The film is directed by Simon West. He admitted to it, apparently. His other noteworthy credits include ‘The General’s Daughter’ (?) and ‘Con Air’ (?!). Simon turned down the chance to direct this film, which he refers to as “James Bond on acid”, 4 or 5 times. He...
