It was not the pouting lips, protruding bust, perfectly-assembled figure or the 'undress me' eyes that FORCED us (a couple of friends and I,that is) to go and endure an hour and a half of Angelina Jolie - Sorry i mean Tomb Raider - a few nights ago at our local Odeon.
Lord, NO NO NO, it was purely the story itself (cough, cough).
That out of the way, I better get on with reviewing the movie, as is.
I won't spoil the plot for you by giving details, i'll stick to sketchy outlines of the story which if you still don't know what it's remotely about - 'what palnet have you been on the past few years?'
The film centres around the main character of Lara Croft, a wealthy (with a capital W) adventurer, daughter of a dead archaeologist who passed on his knowledge and sense of adventutre on to his daughter.
The film started with an enticing piece of action to get us in the mood for more later on. It then developed into a mixture of sentimentality mixed with scenes of Miss Jolie's bare flesh (which even for the most hot-blodded men amongst us) i thought was unnecessary.
The story takes our heroine from the depths of past city ruins in the Cambodian jungle to sub-zero ice lands, all in search of two ancient rock pieces that need to be reunited and can only have the desired effect when the planets are aligned in a straight line (apprently happens every 5000 years, or so we're told). The rock will give the power of GOD to the bearer plus the small issue of manipulating time- i'm sure GOD'll have something to say about that
The baddies happily tag along throughout the whole movie, either in tandem or slightly out of synch with Lara. They are an organisation called The Illuminati and want the power of the fancily-engraved rock to GET IT ON with all the evil in the world.
You want action?? Well there's a lot of it. Watch out for the bit in the garage of the Miss Croft's mansion - my favourite part of the movie.
Two guesses to whether evil or good prevails in the end!!
The ending was an opposite to the beginning and somewhat disappointing, but hey, no one's complaining.
In summary, Tomb raider is hardly the stuff to get your grey matter going into overtime. It is a pure piece of escapism if ever there was one. Having not played the computer game, barring 10 minutes many moons ago, i can't really compare the two. On the whole though, it kept us all occupied and fully interested for most of its duration, apart from the interluding flashbacks of Lara and her father trying to squeeze an emotion out of the viewer , which i personally found boring but probably necessary for the motion picture. It is certainly worth a watch.
As Cilla would say, have a 'LARA, LARA' fun.

Advantages: Lara with true flesh. Don't have to "finish the game" to see how the story ends. Disadvantages: Lara's already existing biography has not been kept!
Advantages: Angelina Jolie, Angelina Jolie, Angelina Jolie. Oh, and some excellent action sequencies Disadvantages: No underwater swimming scenes, like in the game
