Evilmovies and the hit remake of his ownDawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented withLand of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985'sDay of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classicNight of the Living Dead: Zombies(also known as "stenches" for their rotting odour) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired,Land of the Deadbenefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie,Land of the Deaddelivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff ShannonThe Texas Chainsaw MassacreThe 2003 version ofThe Texas Chainsaw Massacreadheres to the pure-and-simple slasher-movie formula: introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about the nauseating sensation of waiting for something to jump out of the dark. --Bret Fetzer

Advantages: Ed Gein Documentary DVD extra Disadvantages: Only moderately scarry
So Hallowe'en night, the obligatory somewhat pathetic partying has ended it's about 1o'clock in the morning so decide to put this on and live the Hallowe'en atmosphere.
THE STORY
It's 1973 and the film starts with a filmed walk through of the crime scene of the ChainsawMassacre and before it can really get started we are thrown towards the past and 5 young people coming back from partying in Mexico to go see a Lynrd Skynrd concert somewhere in Texas, when suddenly they meet a young female hitch hiker who keeps crying and is more than abit erratic. They pick her up and start driving in the direction she came from which made little sense to me but hey. She starts screaming your going the wrong way (why did they pick her up if they weren't going to go her way? Why?). She then gets over excited pulls a gun from the heer groin ...
Advantages: the guy playing the sheriff Disadvantages: too many plot holes
! the fact that leatherface doesn't kill the final girl right away is also a give away that she's going to live.
the 2nd boy on the meat-hook could have put his feet on top of the piano and pushed himself off the hook. we weren't shown the piano earlier, mistake/goof? You can't tell if Jedadiah is trying to help her and Morgan or suckering them into another trap (which it seems like to me). Them running into an abandoned house like place where he carves an X in the door (a reference to Freddy or Jason?) and she hides him in a closet and hides in a crawl space herself.
Oh, and how can a chainsaw keep running when it's dropped (I'd have assume the engine would stop right away). leatherface kills the boy after hanging him from a chandelier (again, you see nothing you just think you do) and of course it's the final chase of the last living girl ...
Advantages: Visually impressive. Disadvantages: Not scary, gory for the sake of it, dull characters.
Tim Burton has a lot to answer for. Even since his poor, but finanically successful "re-imagining" of Planet Of The Apes, it seems Hollywood is falling over itself to produce as many "new" films using the names of classic ones, but little else. Few of these films have much in common with the original films, aside from an ability to trade off of an already established name. Unfortunately, The TexasChainsawMassacre is little different.
I suppose I should point out that I'm not particularly a fan of the original film, so this is a hardly going to be a "they changed all these things and ruined it" type rant. The overwhealming feeling I felt through the film was one of sheer boredom. There was absolutely nothing within the film that I hadn't seen elsewhere. The film plays as some mutated hybrid of the original Massacre film ...

DVD Description
Includes the horror films LAND OF THE DEAD and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. With LAND OF THE DEAD, director George A. Romero positions the bulk of his story in a giant skyscraper which houses the last humans left on the planet; although his intentions are foggy this time, THE FILM appears to be Romero's commentary on the post-9/11 political landscape. The zombies only bother crews who venture outside the makeshift city for supplies, but the people are kept sedated by their leader, the irascible Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), who exaggerates their threat. What Kaufman doesn't realise is that the zombies are learning skills they half-remember from their old selves, leading to some impressively blood-soaked scenes of tumult. In an unusual move for Romero, Hopper is joined by name actors such as John Leguizamo and Asia Argento. The film greatly benefits as a result, successfully portraying an atrophied civilisation that has regressed to a primitive state, allowing its undead tormentors to sense that a free lunch may be just around the corner. In THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, a quiet summer drive through rural Texas ends in violent tragedy when several youths encounter a chainsaw-wielding psychopathic killer and his demented family. Tobe Hooper's gruesome tale of terror is loosely based on the Ed Gein killings, which actually occurred in Plainsfield, Wisconsin. Shot in a neo-documentary style, this incredibly influential horror film spawned numerous sequels and imitations.
