An all-new chapter of horror is about to begin... George A. Romero's Land of the Dead is ... more
the acclaimed director's long-awaited return to the genre he invented beginning with the seminal Night of the Living Dead followed by Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. In Romero's harrowing newest vision the world (as humankind has known it) is merely a memory. In its place is the never-ending nightmare existence of us-the living-versus them-the "walkers." What's left of mankind is cordoned off behind the walls of a fortified city while the walking dead roam the vast wasteland beyond. The few wealthy and powerful try to maintain an illusion of life as it was dwelling high above the city in the exclusive towers of Fiddler's Green the last bastion of the ruling class. On the streets below however the remaining less fortunate of the city's inhabitants eke out a hard-scrabble life seeking what little solace they can in the vices available-gambling flesh trade drugs-anything that offers even a fleeting respite from the hell their lives have become. Both the lofty heights of Fiddler's Green and the demoralizing lows of the city below are lorded over by a handful of ruthless opportunists led by Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) who keeps his hands in everything from real estate to less above-board pursuits. To bring food and other essential supplies to the occupants of the city and to allow the Green's well-to-do to acquire the scarce luxury items to which they were once accustomed a hardened group of mercenaries-headed by Riley (Simon Baker) and his second-in-command Cholo (John Leguizamo)-run retrieval missions outside the city protected by their massive armored vehicle Dead Reckoning. Riley and Cholo like Kaufman are in it for the money which they hope to use for their own escapes- Riley to the North with promises of "a world without fences" and freedom and Cholo to the luxury of Fiddler's Green far away from the violent life he has known. While Kaufman and his employees concern themselves with commerce life is changing both within and beyond the walls of the city. Unrest and anarchy are on the rise among the city's disenfranchised and outside the army of the dead is changing evolving learning to organize and communicate. When Cholo commandeers Dead Reckoning intent on extorting millions out of Kaufman and his cronies Riley and his ragtag group-including Slack (Asia Argento) and Charlie (Robert Joy)-are called into action to stop Cholo and in the process protect the city and its population from the growing army of evolving zombies storming its weakening perimeter.

Advantages: high quality and an awesome film Disadvantages: far more expensive than the regular DVD
of things.
The script is very well written and Ridley scott's directing is near perfect, every camera shot and scene can remain free from criticism.
The acting is excellent with two well known people as great roles. Liam Neeson's role was well played although i would have liked to have seen more of him, and orlando Bloom's acting was up to standards and every other role was perfectly filled.
The fact that this is the directorscut does not go unnoticed as i watched several scenes that i previously had not. The Blu-ray side shone through quite clearly, every bead of sweat shone from the characters head and every glimmer was caught in the highest of quality, however it will be a long time before i fork out the 100 £ difference for a Blu-ray disk player.
The only criticisms i can give to this film is that certain characters whom i ...
Advantages: Some of the extras included on this DVD are quite interesting, decent special effects. Disadvantages: The film is very dull, the acting performances are incredibly poor.
poor excuse for a zombie film. It's really quite ridiculous how well this film fared, I personally am actually quite ashamed to have paid good money to have purchased this DVD and yet had to really in order to complete the collection.
The best thing about this DVD has probably got to be the extras, their inclusion make this purchase seem like a little less of a waste of money to me. I'm not generally one to watch extras, but when a film is particularly poor I do tend to make an exception in order to feel as though my money has gone a little further. This Director's Cut edition of 'Land of the Dead' contains a total of ten extras and some of them are actually quite good. The first of these is 'Undead Again: The Making of Land of the Dead', an interesting insight into how the film was made including insights from some of the actors ...
Advantages: Plenty of Blood & Gore for zombie lovers Disadvantages: Not the best zombie movie out there
Land of the dead is George's 4th zombie movie on his list of 5, even after all this time he can still today portray the zombie genre that I believe he created in todays movies.
Land of the dead is somewhat unoriginal from the rest of his movies, he leaves alot of the thinking to his audience. From the very beginning of this movie he jumps straight into the zombie apocalypse. We dont know where they came from or how it happened, but there everywhere..... except for the big apple which has been sealed by the US army to protect the surviving citizens inside, but we learn that these zombies adapt and learn and it turns out the surviving citizens end up being the ones locked in the big city with no escape.
The zombies in this movie are slow so it is for all the old timers out there who love some of Romero's originals. But remember they ...

DVD Description
Zombie movies slip in and out of fashion, but it's always a special occasion when the man who helped turn the undead into a worldwide phenomenon decides to add an instalment to his ongoing saga of flesh-eating films. George A. Romero's zombie movies have all appeared in different decades, beginning with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 1968, DAWN OF THE DEAD in '78, and DAY OF THE DEAD in '85. Romero skipped the '90s, but a zombie renaissance in the early 21st century (28 DAYS LATER, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) finds him back in the directors chair. Often seen as allegories for their times, Romero's films have been connected to societal events such as the consumerism of the '70s (DAWN OF THE DEAD) and the spread of the AIDS virus in the '80s (DAY OF THE DEAD). With 2005's LAND OF THE DEAD, Romero positions the bulk of his story in a giant skyscraper which houses the last humans left on the planet; although his intentions are foggy this time, LAND appears to be Romero's commentary on the post-9/11 political landscape. The zombies only bother crews who venture outside the makeshift city for supplies, but the people are kept sedated by their leader, the irascible Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), who exaggerates their threat. What Kaufman doesn't realise is that the zombies are learning skills they half-remember from their old selves, leading to some impressively blood-soaked scenes of tumult. In an unusual move for Romero, Hopper is joined by name actors such as John Leguizamo and Asia Argento. The film greatly benefits as a result, successfully portraying an atrophied civilisation that has regressed to a primitive state, allowing its undead tormentors to sense that a free lunch may be just around the corner.
