After a twenty year gap George A Romero finally managed to produce another entry in his cult 'living dead' series and the results were mixed. Shunning any continuity, Land is not a direct sequel. The zombie crisis doesn't seem any worse than it was in the underrated Day Of The Dead and the characters in this film have modern technology - if society had collapsed in 1985's Day then surely this would be impossible. The centrepiece of Land is Fiddler's Green, a huge shopping mall with luxury apartments. The world as we knew it may have ended but capitalism still thrives. Dennis Hopper plays the head of this capitalist enterprise and apparently based his character on Donald Rumsfeld. Simon Baker as our nominal hero trys to work out who is worse - the humans or the zombies. It won't come as a huge suprise to know the zombies gatecrash this sanctuary. Land is about 'ignoring the problem' - zombies in this case a problem to turn a blind eye to like homlessness. Romero also makes some comments about the recent war in Iraq and veers a fine line between heavy-handedness and political thought. I love Romero and his series and have to admit Land is not the film I was hoping for. Romero's series is based around minimal characters that we care for and a feeling of dread. Land never generates a unique atmosphere and has too many characters. It is also a very short film although you do get some restored scenes here, one includes cholo dealing with a zombie in a luxury apartment and you wonder why stuff like this was cut from the original. Land is relatively easy on the gore too - especially compared to the other films in the series.
Overall, rather than show the kids how it's done Romero suprisingly joins the crowd and comes up with a film that could fit in with the current zombie genre without standing out a great deal. Problems aside is Land worth seeking out if you are a fan? I would say yes. Romero has a bigger budget than usual and the film has glimpses of scope and what might have been. The deserted city streets, the truck blowing sparks in the wind. With more time and more thought Land could have been much, much better. It isn't a bad film but Romero's series is his biggest problem. Judged by that Land doesn't quite hit the spot. Romero's Diary Of The dead is now in production and we can only hope the indie spirit works its way into the new film in a manner it clearly did not in Land.
Extras: I enjoyed the extras a great deal. Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of Shaun Of The Dead meet their hero in one section and there are plenty of extras detailing the making of the film and the creation of the zombies and their make-up. Best of all though is George Romero. A friendly, laid-back presence throughout the extras material - it's nice to see him finally back at work.

Advantages: Some of the extras included on this DVD are quite interesting, decent special effects. Disadvantages: The film is very dull, the acting performances are incredibly poor.
