bedtime story. A story M. Night Shyamalan told his children is the springboard for this spellbinding plunge into the supernatural. Paul Giamatti plays an apartment manager who finds an otherworld water nymph named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard) in the pool, then sets out to help her return to her home, The Blue World. It's about to get very dangerous, she warns. And very fascinating. Because fierce Blue World monsters prowl nearby, determined to destroy Story - and anyone who aids her, including the apartment dwellers who come to realize they are players in her tale. Their lives have undiscovered purposes. And how they defy the monsters to fulfill those destinies forms the amazing heart of discovery in Lady in the Water.

Story is being stalked by vicious creatures from her world that are determined to prevent her from making the journey from our world back to hers. Story's unique powers reveal the fates of Cleveland's fellow tenants, whose destinies are tied directly to her own, and they must work together to decipher a series of codes that will unlock the pathway back to her world. Although the film starts out really well setting the scene and the mysterious atmosphere I found that it then began to sag about midway through the film and the story began to drag a little bit.
However the ending is quite good once you get through the slower middle part of the film.
I wouldn't say this film was a total wash out but it definatley is not up to Shylaman's earlier standards and I did find it a bit disappointing. However I hope he doesn't give up as he is definately one of the better talents out there.
Mr. Shyamalan has a nice way with actors, a fine eye and an actual vision of the world (New York Times, 23/01/2007)
One of Shyamalan's admirable traits is that he never just homages earlier work, but always thoroughly overhauls his sources. There are traces in LADY IN THE WATER of TWILIGHT ZONE writer Rod Serling's tales... (Sight and Sound, 23/01/2007)
Zooming in, Giamatti and Howard are technically perfect... (Total Film, 23/01/2007)
[T]hanks to superb performances, it's pretty engrossing. Howard draws you right in, there's no way not to empathize with Giamatti... (Ultimate DVD, 23/01/2007)
DVD Description
Kindly caretaker Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti, SIDEWAYS) discovers an elfin creature named Story (Bryce Dallas Howard, THE VILLAGE) living in the swimming pool of the apartment complex where he works. It soon becomes apparent to Cleveland that Story is not of this world, and that her mission to deliver a message to mankind is fraught with danger. The stuttering caretaker tries valiantly to protect her so that she may have safe passage back to the Blue World from whence she came. Suspension of disbelief is mandatory in this beautifully realised modern day fable, directed by master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan, who puts his own unique spin on the conventions of the traditional fairy tale.
