The Lady and the Tramp is one of Disney's early classics and one of my favourites also. It was first released, to cinema audiences, in August 1955. Disney kept all these early animations away from our television screens for many years. As a child, in England, all we ever saw on our small screens of Disney was a taster, at Easter or Christmas, in a Disney-time special which showed brief clips.
So there was nothing for it, as a child, but to watch Disney at the cinema, on one of those memorable family outings. I have such fond memories of these times and also these sort of films.
Eventually maybe ten or fifteen years ago Lady and the Tramp was released on video, as Disney began to release a few of their old classics, and I received it as a present. Some Disney films have now made it to the small screen, via television channels, but not Lady and the Tramp as far as I am aware.
Most readers will have come across this cartoon at some time though in their viewing life, but for those who haven't, seek it out and indulge in some good, old time smaltz.
Lady is a surprise present to his wife, Darling, from Jim Dear. These names are what Lady hears as the couple speak to each other and so she calls her owners Darling and Jim Dear. Lady is a puppy cocker spaniel who is given in a cardboard box, tied with ribbon. For me, as in life, the puppy stage of Lady's life shows her at her cutest.
This period however is only brief in the film. She has a few funny, naughty moments settling in to her new home and the next time we see her she is full grown. Life is peaches and cream but it is not destined to stay this way.
Along life's path Lady meets with Tramp who is a slightly scruffy, rogue of a mongrel who has a big heart. Tramp's sentiment that 'when a baby arrives, a dog is out the door', give an idea of what's to come. When life turns sour for Lady she meets up with Tramp again and romance blossoms. All is well in the end but there are many dangers and some sadness along the way. I am not going to give any more detail away as, if you haven't watched this film, I don't want to spoil the experience for you.
The animation is old fashioned now but stands up well with an antique charm. The characters are exquisite from the nasty, naughty Siamese twin cats and their horrible owner Aunt Sarah, to the neighbouring English bloodhound Trusty and the ever so Scottish Jock the wee Scottie dog. As usual there are little sub-plots such as the fact that the bloodhound has lost his sense of smell.
The film is set in possibly late Victorian times in America. The drawings have such a quaint charm which I think is also down to the period it is set in.
As with most Disney animations there is a wealth of music running through this film, some by well known voices. Mind you if you're under forty you may not have heard of them before. The voice of Peggy Lee, as a dog's home captive singing, 'He's a tramp' to her ex is excellent. Peggy is also the voice of Darling, amongst others. There is the romance as Lady and Tramp share a plate of spaghetti, donated by the Italian restaurant owner. They eat to the strains of 'Bella Notte'(apologies if I've spelt it wrong but you get the picture)
This animation is a traditional piece of work from the time when the Disney Studios were on a high, had the market to themselves and still had Uncle Walt at the helm.
Personally I adore dogs in life as well as film but I don't think that matters. This story has many things which relate to life in general, such as feeling you have had you're nose pushed out.
Lady and the Tramp retains an innocent charm which may be too sentimental for some. However if you watch it for what it is you should love it. This is one film which is suitable for all the family from the youngest to the oldest. There are a couple of slight scares in the middle, for example the dog catcher and the dog pound with death row, which small children may not like but really nothing significantly frightening. I would think small children will love the cuteness of all the different dogs and the musical score.
RECOMMENDATION Go on, leave your cynicism behind, lose yourself in a bygone, gentler age and relive your childhood. A classic cartoon full of charm which will definitely entertain.
Advantages: Fun, animals characters and suitable for the whole family Disadvantages: None
...One day the paths of Lady and Tramp cross and they end up falling in love. But it is not ideal and with no owner to claim him the dog pound is trying to get hold of Tramp - it doesn't help that Lady's owners are away and Aunt Sarah who is looking after Lady and the owner's baby doesn't take too kindly to Lady at all. Will Lady and Tramp be able to escape being put in the pound?
Cast:
As always actors are brought in to do the voices for the Disney ... ...more than one character.
Lady - Barbara Luddy
Tramp - Larry Roberts
Jock, Bulldog in pound and policeman in Zoo - Bill Thompson
Trusty - Bill Baucom
Darling and Peg - Peggy Lee
Jim Dear - Lee Millar
Aunt Sarah - Verna Felton
For those eagled eyed or ultimate Disney fans of you out there you'll notice that Barbara Luddy who does the voice of Lady has also done quite a few other Disney character voices including Kanga from 'Winnie the Pooh' ...

...classics of this particular genre, Lady and the Tramp, now almost five decades old.
Disney certainly knew he'd stumbled onto a veritable goldmine when he opened up with the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and he was never one to look a gift horse in the mouth. If one wanted to be just that little bit scathing, one could give him a bit of a thick ear for sticking so steadfastly to that standard formula without fear of much retribution.
Nevertheless ... ...In fact, so close are Lady and the Tramp and The Aristocats that you can close your eyes and imagine that this is the self same film. A happy go lucky vagabond creature encounters a well to do female of the species who has fallen upon hard times and brings her safe and sound to a typically happy ending, despite a million and one perils. On the way he takes her deep into a different world from that she has known, an exciting and vivid world where ...

Lady and the tramp
I am one of those people who just love to watch cartoons, they are very class how they bring a story line in to things that are just really make believe. One of my favourite cartoons would have to be Lady and the Tramp. It’s a story line that could be used in even a real life movie with proper actors. So it just makes it better seems the producers of this movie decided to use dogs as the main characters in this great film. ... ...and fall in love! Lady is an elegant young lady dog, who is beautiful and clean with a nice glimmer to her self. She is from a well-mannered and decent family who she lives with on a nice estate. The tramp is a scruffy male dog that lives on the street, has no family and gets food from his local shops. Even though the tramp is well admired by many other dogs around the whole place where they live!

...Okay, have fun reading:
Lady and the Tramp is a disgrace. It completely destroys the self-confidence and self-worth of a developing child. This movie should be wiped off the face of the earth. Seriously. It's causing lots of problems.
Barbara Luddy provides the voice of Lady, a refined Cocker Spaniel that sounds like she just walked out of finishing school. Her owners are quite rich and, to be honest, quite boring. They have a nice little house ... ...the turn of the century. Lady has a simple life, lots of friends, and two very eerie enemies in a pair of Siamese cats. Beware the Siamese cats! If you're a cat person, you'll clearly see the biased attitude that Disney has toward cats.
Lady's life becomes complicated when she meets Tramp (Larry Roberts). Tramp is a vagabond, a tough mongrel with a heart of gold. Tramp and Lady strike up an unlikely friendship and an even more unlikely romantic ...

opinion, it is the best of the original Disney movies and it is a shame that modern day animated films seem to lack the charm and magic of these early master pieces. Although, predominantly aimed at the younger generation, this has so much appeal to an adult audience as well, and is perfect viewing for all the family. Even at the higher than normal DVD price, this whole package of film and bonus features is brilliant value.
This version of Lady and the Tramp is available on Amazon for £14.99 but there is also a second version of this which comes packaged with a Limited Edition Lady cuddly toy for £25.95.

Lady is a beautiful cocker spaniel and Tramp is a scruffy mongrel. When this unlikely pair gets together there is trouble ahead but also romance in this classic Disney animation about two loveable dogs.
It is the story of a puppy called Lady who was bought as present from a husband, Jim Dear, to his wife, Darling. She makes friends with two local dogs, a small black Scottish terrier, called Jock, and a big, brown bloodhound, called Trusty. They know a scruffy mongrel called Tramp. He warns them about humans who have babies. Apparently, they don't love their dogs so much afterwards. After the couple do have a baby, they go away for a while. Aunt Sarah, who brings her Siamese cats with her, looks after Lady and the baby. When the cats get Lady into trouble unfairly she gets taken to have a muzzle put on her. She escapes but gets into ...
