Kuroneko is a film written and directed by Kaneto Shindô, which dates back to the year 1968. It is by all accounts a horror movie. But really, anyone who approaches Kuroneko thinking it a horror movie will most likely be disappointed. In terms of the conventions of story it does contain themes very much in sympathy with 'horror' but if anything it derives most of its inspiration from Shintoism and Kabuki theatre. Also, it is a companion piece and ... ...from my point of view Kuroneko is far superior, and if anything far more atmospheric - as difficult as that might have been.
I came across the film by accident, viewing a trailer for it on the excellent Masters of Cinema website, from Eureka Video. Something about the energy of the trailer, the evocative black and white photography, the thudding kodo drumming soundtrack drew me in and so I sent off for the film with high hopes - hopes higher than ...
