live CD culled from various concerts on their 2004 tour. Minimum-Maximum is essentially a greatest-hits album with an audience applauding and occasionally shouting. Without them, of course, you'd never know the album was live, since Kraftwerk is the band that put the programming in pop music. Not much has changed with them since the 1980s. They're still wired to the same sonic circuitry as on Electric Café in 1986, sculpting glistening electro-soundscapes that pulse but never quite groove. And they still sing in that flat, German-accented English and French with Speak and Spell electro-voices. But rather than sound dated, this has a timeless charm, especially since Kraftwerk are among the few Kraut rock groups with a sense of humor. With only two studio albums in the last 20 years, you have to give them credit for not caving in to current electronica and techno trends--Kraftwerk remain resolutely electronic. Even their samples sound synthesized. But also give them credit for some of the most relentlessly glistening electronic music ever crafted, and a sound that remains surprisingly pure. All the hits are here, from "Autobahn" to "Tour de France," but nicely buffed to a high chrome finish. --John Diliberto

How interesting can it be to watch a bunch of senior German men stand still on stage for over 2 hours whilst they play minimalist robotic techno music on their laptops?
It really does not sound that interesting but in actual fact it is a fantastic and amazing visual treat. Right from the start of this DVD when the introduction Kicks in welcoming us in very formal German you know that the man-machines are going to be great. By the time you are half way through their performance of The Man Machine, you are totally engrossed if this is the sort of thing you like.
The performances are highly slick but definitely live, as they rummage through their extensive back-catalogue of highly minimalist robotic pop. Almost everything a Kraftwerk fanatic could want is here from the sinister Man-Machine with its repetitive techno phrases and worryingly resonant vocoded vocal. You have the awesome wonder of "Neon-Lights", the perfect synth-pop of "The Model", and lots of songs about cycling. There is also a fairly short version of "Autobahn" which captures the essence of the original. The music and sounds with in the music have been updated whilst keeping the feel of the original studio recordings. It is obvious that they have spent a lot of time putting together the musical component of the show which is fantastic, but lets us not wait another 17 years until next time please.
The visuals they use are stunning covering the whole of the back of the stage, with a slight nod to art deco they manage to keep everything as minimalist as possible, but still capturing the viewer's interest. Some video mixing has been used to concentrate of the visuals on the show, but then lets face it 4 Germans standing still is not something that will capture and retain you interest.
The range of extras is so minimalist as to not exist but you have a choice of normal stereo or 5.1 surround sound for the audiophiles amongst you.......
On top of all that the whole DVD package has been lovingly put together and is a fantastic thing to hold, and if you have a spare 40 quid you can get the limited edition version. I am a fan but not that much of a fan so I got this from CDWow for £11-95. Not bad at all.
