History of Alan Partridge ------------------------------ Steve Coogan plays a outrageous character in Alan Partridge and in recent years has become him. As things stand, Alan has just left NEWS PROGRAM and has been thrown into this new type of live chat show. Knowing Me, Knowing You has already been on Radio transmission (available on Audio CD) and now it has been commissioned to become a TV chat show with celebrities. Not actual celebrities are on the show, but 2 main actors, Rebecca Front,Patrick Marber and David Schneider play the roles of numerous people. Youngish (30ies) Alan is up for anything….as long it goes to plan, even if this means being down right rude to guests and being in-flexible.
The Setting --------------- To quote Alan exactly, the set is based on a "Lobby from a top International Hotel". That doesn't mean anything to us the audience though…neither does actually having a actual fountain… "200 grand this cost!" the viewer again does not need to know this, but it is hilarious to know this as the guests rip it out of poor Partridge… There is also a resident house band by the name of Glen Ponda and Chalet, who Alan found in a pub as we find out in the series. Alan's pocket in which guests are surprised with special tasks to do, and Alan Partridge in which Alan interviews some one who shares his name. As in every episode though, no matter what bad things happen, Partridge ends the show like a true professional, "And on that bombshell….."
FIRST DISC
Episode 1 -------------- An introduction into a new kind of comedy show. Supposedly Roger Moore is meant to be the main star guest but he doesn't turn up, supposedly "At a roundabout in Kiswick" A top jockey (Sue Lewis), the presenter of This Is my Life (Keith Hunt) appear on the show, in which the latter is totally embarrassed through Partridge bringing out his son, who's birthday he has forgotten. Alan has a field day with Hunt, even using his catchphrase against him. Also a live greebo band rock band in which scares Alan entirely, "No, No, No, No, Ladies and Gentlemen I must apologise I did not the full content of this song…Murder be it domestic or genocide is illegal in this country!" Top stuff.
Episode 2 -------------- Starts the show by slating off a critical newspaper review about the show. This time, guests include a Agony Aunt from Playboy, Gina Langland, in who gives Alan a kiss…who is a tran-sexual…Magician Tony Le Mesmer, who hyponotises Alan and puts him on the Wheel of Death…A Hollywood couple who split up live on TV…because of Impotantness… "That explains why you (to his wife) sleep around"…
Episode 3 -------------- How hot is this show? Take it away Alan, "Well, imagine Debbie Harry in Caminickers, spoon-feeding a beef vindaloo to Pan's people in a sauna in Bangkok". Supposedly the hottest dancing team in Europe , "hot pants" are joining Alan in a Jacuzzi…he doesn't know they are male, he thinks they are female! Also, a singer, Gina Langland performs medleys with Alan, who believes she collects Victorian Dogs…mistakes the American accent, and in which she collects Victorian Dolls! The man they love to hate, Lawrence Knowles, a man who ruins Celebrities careers. They discover he has a hairy back…and has to visit a specialist… The Olympic Gold women's relay team of 1936 join Alan, are now around 3 80 year old ladies, who Alan gets to re-in act the historic event!
Episode 4 -------------- In Paris, with a co-host "I was asked if I wanted a French co-host to help present the show….I said No! No way! Nul Points. Absolutment non…Then I saw her photograph and said…oui", Alan now insults a French chef as he eats a cows testicle by accident, Phillipe Lambert, A rude clown show in which Alan stops as they start having imaginary sex….A strange fashion designer in which Alan ridicules… "I didn't realise that as well as doing fashion, you do pantomime"…and then after that Alan sacks his house band live on TV as they didn't invite when they went out the night before.
Episode 5 -------------- Sporting a moustache, the band is back due to a court injunction, Alan has a threatening interview with gangster Terry Norton., who was cleared of murder, in which Alan implies he was guilty…. Through re-in acting. Also, in the Alan Partridge section, they bring out Alan in a coffin due to the guest dying a week before, to find out he was a ladies man "Lets hope there are girls in Heaven…if there's where he's going. From what you are saying it's a little unclear". They give the family a gravestone, with the wrong D.O.B…Alan also judges a Miss Norwich competition, in which the girl who Alan picks, only wins as she says she likes Alan… A political discussion for a bi-election in West Chalfront, plenty of laughs due to a joke party being invented, the Bald Brummies Against The Big-Footed Conspiracy Party….who fights the Conservative party candidate, who ends up swearing and ruining his chances of gaining the seat.
Episode 6 -------------- Alan has to start the show by having to apologise for Bank Robberies committed using the Alan face masks…The court case is dropped by Glen Ponda and then Alan finds out he is gay and then ends conversation. The guests include Scott and Dean Mclean, 11 and 9 year old actors, who just end up laughing at Alan as he gives them a "bat mobile" car…..in which Alan ends it with "Why don't you get a life?"…and they just laugh at Alan…Alan introduces the 2 guests that will be replacing his show. Off the straight and Narrow, about Lesbians….Also on the show is an awful act with a man and a puppet monkey, who is awful…as he cant even remember what to say. Then, the piece de resistance….Alan Forbes, a restaurant critic for a magazine. He brings in a gun he just purchased from an Auction owned by Lord Byron…in which Alan does not know the gun is loaded and while looking at the gun accidentally fires it and kills Forbes… "Its not my fault! I didn't know it was loaded!". The show ends with dancing and, "Knowing me Alan Partridge, Knowing You the Police, AHA!"
SECOND DISC
Christmas Special - Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan Partridge A Christmas special, set in a mock up studio of Alan's house' actual Front Room. With many guests. Including Fanny Thomas, the rude and full of innuendoes TV Chef. Also present is Tony Hayers, Chief Commissioner of The BBC who Alan cant seem to get to know whether he has got a second series. There is also so many plugs for Rover, especially a awesome joke "Which car goes woof woof? A rover" Hayers, then says that people who advertise on the BBC will be severely reprimanding anyone who breaks this in their contract. What Alan does over Christmas in Norwich, which includes a visit to a hospital where no one knows who Alan is. Also present are Gordon and Liz Heron a golfing duo of which Gordon is disabled, Alan seems to un-intentially insult Gordon about many things and Alan has to swiftly move on. A giant Christmas cracker, in a record breaking attempt, is not pulled and a "dialysis" machine is not able to be donated to a local hospital. Gordon then states that the amount it cost to film the show, 20 dialysis machines could have been given to hospitals. A disastress "12 days of Christmas" song in which Alan has to abort, only then to hit Hayers round the face and lose all hope of getting a second series. Mick Hucknell then comes out and sings Ding Dong Merrily on High, and we find out that Alan's wife actually left him on Christmas Eve. It looks like it's the end of Alan Partridges career, as he hits an all time low.
Extras included on the second disc of this DVD are a Knowing me Knowing You test shoot, in which you can watch a demo for the show with a Australian singer as the guest….hilarious stuff which lasts around 15 minutes. Also, There is footage from Comic Relief 95 and Rural Alan, in which alan goes on a country ramble, in Norwich…… There are also trailers for the Knowing Me Knowing You series episodes and a commentary for Knowing Me Knowing Yule.
Overall, a amazing series of comedy, with everyone's favourite man they love to hate, Alan Partridge. With subtitles and Dolby Surround, there is nothing wrong with this DVD and as Alan would say, "Kiss my Face". Available in shops for £12.99, it's a bargain for a DVD you will be able to watch again and again, and is great value for money….AHA!
Advantages: Hilarious after several views. Reasonably good value for money. Disadvantages: Bit too short.
...from the one series of Knowing Me, Knowing You, along with the Christmas special (Knowing Me, Knowing Yule), and heaps of extras and special features (including biographies of the stars of the show and audio commentaries by members of the cast). I think it is unique in that it is not your standard comedy series. Most shows are sitcom based, whereas this (when it originally hit our screens way back in 1994) is completely different. It is a spoof of ... ...ends up alienating them to the point where they walk off during the interview, or even in one case resort to giving him physical abuse. For those who do not know who Alan Partridge is, firstly, have you been living in a box the past two decades? Secondly, he is a narcissistic, self-opinionated, ignorant man with delusions of grandeur, and that is what makes this show so funny. In each case his ignorance and downright rudeness is met by the equally ...
