Advantages: funny, good extras on DVD,
Disadvantages: poor film, nothing like series

...was initially made during the Vietnamese war and was a protest against it, but many people did not mind. I watched this solely as I wanted to know what the series was based upon, but as a film itself it is actually quite weak. The acting isn't anything particularly great and there is no story line to speak of. It has no special effects and a very annoying laughter soundtrack. I do not know why it is rated 15, probably just because of a little blood, but if it were a modern day film, with our lapsed regulations, it would only be a 12 rating. The DVD itself has interesting features. It contains 3 documentaries about the series all of which are worth the money, without the film itself on the DVD. An audio commentary, which you may like, but I found a little boring and did not bother listening to the full hour and a half. The rest of the features... Read review

Advantages: great double dvds
Disadvantages: special effects dvd can be too long

...I didn't think they could improve on this great film but wow what a great dvd version.The special edition might be worth that little bit extra than normal dvds, but you get your value for money.You all know the story,aliens in big ships coming to destroy earth,heros save the day,but this has all the extra bits you didn't see,like how they made the white house explode and how they did all the other special effects.They also show you an alternate ending,which looking at it you just know it would never have worked. In the special edition you get 2 dvds one with the film and the other with the special effects.A warning to you all the special effects dvd is just as long as the film and when you watch it you have to take into account the time so that you can watch the film too.Best to watch them on different night if you don't have th time....
